I was looking at the troparia for the weekdays in both the Jordanville and the HTM prayerbooks; St. Nicholas is commemorated each Thursday. Anyone know why? I mean, St. Nicholas is great and all, but why does he get a day for himself and say, St. Ephraim or St. Anthony doesn't? Monday for the angels, Tuesday for the Forerunner, etc...why Thursday for St. Nicholas?

Dear Michael,
When I asked that question, I was told that it was because he is the most popular Saint in the Orthodox Church who suffered much for the Church and is a great intercessor for the Church. He stood up against Arius at the Council and for his actions was censured by the council only to be vindicated by Our Lord and the Blessed Theotokos before the whole Councsil. he is a powerful wonderworker and patrol of almost every major group in the Church, Children, seafarers, Russia, Greece,bankers, the abused , the abandoned, the prisoner etc. St. George is the next most popular Saint. These two Saints also are noted to have the most Churches in Orthodoxy named after them than other Saints due to their powerful intercessions.

Michael,
I was told that the reason we commemorate St. Nicholas on Thursdays is because his episcopacy represented a model of rule that could be followed for all ages. In other words, he would be the ideal example of a true Bishop of the Orthodox Church. Through his miracles and how he lived his life he earned a place of honor among all bishops and a separate day of commemoration.

Nick is quite right, of course.
Note further that St Nicholas' weekly commemoration is linked to that of the holy Apostles. As the common apolytikion for a hieromartyr teaches, a holy Bishop is one who "shared the Apostles' way of life and succeeded to their throne;" thus it is fitting that the remembrance of the model of Bishops, St Nicholas, should be coupled with that of holy Apostles of the Lord.

I have to look at it again, but I think St. Nicholas is commemorated every day in the Paraklitiki (octoehos). Which puts a different spin on the whole thing...
