Christ is Risen! I think this is so beautiful, God bless the Armenians, and the Syrians who are sharing this beauty with us. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKBtb3zZhOEthe priest's version is also so so beautiful, ever since i found this on you tube,I like to listen to it often, but especialy at the end of a stressful or rather long day, both the prayer and the way it is being prayed here just comforts and reassures me that God is in control. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-7asymfkO4&feature=relatedAgain thank God for those who shared this with us!

Christ is Risen! After the great lent, the fast that is cherished by all members of the church, is the fast of the Assumption of the Body of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In Ethiopia because school is closed at this time millions of orthodox youth flock to the monasteries all over the country for the entire time of the fast. and those who remain in the cities most leave the comfort of their beds and sleep on the floors, observe strict dietary restrictions, and attend ‘seatat’ the midnight prayer of the church as well as the Divine Liturgy done at mid day during week days and in the morning during the weekends. The children that come to the Divine Liturgy are so many that in order to be done on reasonable time the Holy Eucharist is given on one day for boys and the next for girls, it is at this time that most children get to learn a lot about their faith, the Traditions of the church, while fasting, and attending the Divine Liturgy they get to smell the incense, they see the holy icons, they hear of the Love and Mercy of God through the prayers of the church and when the Holy Scriptures are read, they experience the, the bells , the candles, the thousands of Christians around them, all asking the intercession of The Theotokos asking her to come among them with her Beloved Son Jesus Christ and bless them. My most found memories of my experience within the church as a child are during this fast period. I think children need to participate in the Church services, when they experience it, when they understand it, when they are familiar with it, love is easily nurtured, and that love I think helps one to stay anchored in the orthodox way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kklioVrL4kI&feature=relatedHere is one part of the midnight prayer of the church, ‘ ne’ei ha’bene O dingil mis’ele weledeki fikure’ki Iyesus Christos, keme tibareki la’elene’. ‘Come to us O Virgin, along with your beloved Son Jesus Christ, and bless us.’ This particular prayer is accompanied with a solemn ritual, it is done in a group of two and when one group says the first prayer, the other group prostrates themselves and pray the prayer of Mary known as ‘the magnificat’ it starts with ‘ selam lehki enze nisegid nibleki O Maryam nastebetsuaki emarewe neawi temahetsene beki , be ente Hanna emeki we Iyakhem abuki mahebere neyom dingil bareki’ we prostrate ourselves and say peace be unto you O Mary, and bless your name, in you we seek protection from the beast that hunts us , for the sake of your mother Hanna, and your father Joachim we ask you Virgin to bless our assembly. Then comes the prayer St Mary prayed in Luke:1 :46-54. As that group finishes that prayer they get up at the same time the other group would be prostrating and the prayer continues... Blessed day everyone Glory be to the Father and to the Son and the Holy Spirit, both now and ever and unto the ages of ages Amen!

Christ is Risen! Dn.Theodoros's mezmur http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNRV1le7tJA&feature=relatedThe tides rose against me The storm came after me And those who sow said who will rescue him now! But I escaped in peace and stillness Because all things are possible with you O Lord. I am healed with your wounds I am a captive of your love You trampled down my death by your death And behold you raised me up to Life. The tides… When I came before you in prayer of supplication You did not reject me I humbled myself like the tax collector And your grace and mercy sheltered me The tides.. If I am ever shouting for joy and singing It's because I know your love If I am ever calling your name Lord It's because you have changed the story of my life. The tides.. My eyes cannot see any other than you For you are captivating and adorable You became my family, you became my relative For surely who else could bare to be with me? The tides.. blessed day.. Glory be to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit both now and ever until the ages of ages amen!

Christ is Risen! Selam everyone Another mezmur by Dn. Theodoros ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ax9c1LAxo3IIn The Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, One God! Amen. Be Vigilant and Pray so you may not enter into temptation. Mathew 26:41 Let us be vigilant and pray so we may not enter into temptation Let God enter our lives and all our assemblies By prostrating ourselves in prayer to our Father Let us be girdled with might. So we may live in grace and our adversary will be driven away. Rise Up for Prayer! Let us be Vigilant and Pray……. Remember we are in the middle of the battle field And our enemy’s legion is fully armed. O how many among us he has stricken down finding us unarmed. We have run out of oil , and the light of our lanterns grows dim. How can we see the enemy’s fortress if we abandon the light? Rise Up for Prayer! Let us be Vigilant and Pray……. The Lord will lean His ears towards us He will smite the enemy He will break his snare and will save us those who trust in Him. He will lead us into the green pastures restoring our Hope. Who is known to be ashamed after calling on the Name of God.!? Rise Up for Prayer! Let us be Vigilant and Pray……. For He is the Oil of Glory poured on the wounded Healing to the world and is given without payment. The Father of Love will open His gates when we knock He will bless us giving us what we seek. Rise Up for Prayer! Let us be Vigilant and Pray……. ........//........ Glory be to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, both now and ever and unto the ages of ages Amen.

Christ is Risen! Selam everyone Dn.Theodoros Yossef's mezmur.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vo-ozRFOyAk&feature=relatedUntil we see your resurrection O Virgin We are holding vigil and will fast united in Spirit. Until it is revealed to us the truth that Thomas saw. We will not leave from your gates O Covenant of Mercy! He that trampled down death: Your Son is with You! So which grave can hold You in ? From Thomas we heard news of Your Assumption Your resurrection is true indeed; we saw Your Burial Shawl. For death is already defeated by death thus had no power over You! We wanted to see the glory Thomas saw Mystified why this mystery was hidden from us Closing our doors we are prostrated in prayer Reveal yourself and shine your light upon us For Your children we long to see You! For death is already defeated by death Thus had no power over You! Until we see your resurrection O Virgin We are holding vigil and will fast united in spirit. Until it is revealed to us the truth that Thomas saw. We will not leave from your gates O Covenant of Mercy! Your psalmist father David has written to us Saying who among us will not see death? Though in time this became true in You also You did not descend in to the grave forever defeated by death! For death is already defeated by death Thus had no power over You! Until we see your resurrection O Virgin We are holding vigil and will fast united in spirit. Until it is revealed to us the truth that Thomas saw. We will not leave from your gates O Covenant of Mercy! When Thomas descending from his chariot told us of this news We were astounded by what has occurred. Now we long to see this glory O virgin intercede for us! O Covenant of Mercy! For death is already defeated by death Thus had no power over You! Until we see your resurrection O Virgin We are holding vigil and will fast united in spirit. Until it is revealed to us the truth that Thomas saw. We will not leave from your gates O Covenant of Mercy! ..............//................. Blessed day Glory be to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit both now and ever and unto the ages of ages Amen.

Christ is Risen! Selam everyone:) Harp mezmur by Sosena Gebre Iyesus, I am sorry I couldnot keep the poetic beauty , its more of a literal translation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GV6gPW9uTmgOur Creator is Goodness by His Essence He is Forgiving, Merciful, Kind, Patient and Loving. Though mankind sinned against Him He came searching for him, and kept knocking at his door. Our Lord was Born in a stable and saved us! Summoned from His Throne by His love for mankind He United Himself with flesh, O Uncontainable Glory! While mankind was still the enemy filled with wickedness To make him His family He United Himself with Man's flesh. Our Lord was Born. Mankind that was stripped of grace and glory Is restored to his glory by the Love of The Creator Finding him dwelling under the shadow of death Heart filled with sorrow and lamentation He wiped away his tears and gave him Life. Our Lord was Born.. When God was Born in flesh from the Virgin Grace was restored to Man. Through the annunciation of Gabriel of His Birth of the Virgin He made mankind heir to the heavenly kingdom. Our Lord was Born. So we won't die in vain, as we flee from Him His birth became the Sign of Our reconciliation. For He has taken our flesh and glorified us Praise be unto Him for all eternity. Our Lord was Born.. ………..//………. Blessed day Glory be to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit both now and ever and unto the ages of ages Amen.

I notice some youtube commenters got a bit angry about women playing the begena. Is that just a bit of cultural chauvinism or was it actually a Church prohibition?

Selam Hiwot! I am loving your translations of the Tewahedo mezmur. Thank you so much for them! The Ethiopian Orthodox mezmur is very special to me, but I do not know the language so it is good to finally learn a little. If it is not too much trouble, could I ask for a translation of this mezmur by Mirtinesh? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eg4zbiXkdF4It has been a favorite of mine for a long time now. Somewhere in the comments for the video it says that the text is based on the book of Ruth, but it would be so wonderful to know the actual words. Ameseginalehu.

Christ is Risen! Selam everyone Dear dzheremi selam, it is truly the least I can do, but thank you for your kind words; keep me in your prayers. This mezmur is indeed based on the book of Ruth, and from the story, it draws parallels with the historical and present situation in Ethiopia (Naomi the faithful one) and the suffering of the people and their hope for deliverance by God. Their prayer for righteous leadership like David (a leader after God’s own heart) was born from the line of Boaz( to indicate ,from the line of Christians ). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eg4zbiXkdF4Introduction is a paraphrase of Ruth 1:1-2 Bebetelehem rehab behonebet zemen arat nefsat wede moabawiyan mender tesededu yesetitum sim nuhamin neber./When there was famine in the land of Bethlehem four souls sojourned to the land of the Moabites ,the name of the woman was Naomi.Nuhamin deguwa set zares min honeshal/ Good woman Naomi, what troubles you today? Dessta kanchi reqo hazen tsentobishal/ for joy has left you and sorrow has engulfed you Bemoab kagegnesh zeyet ena sinde/ if you found oil and wheat in the land of Moab Ebakish anchi set atitsnagnim ende/ please woman why aren’t you comforted? Sidetegna negne lageru engeda/ I am a sojourner in a foreign land Lemoab sewoch yehonekugne bada/ a stranger to the people of Moab Enbaye yefesal bayenoche moleto/ my eyes over flow with tears Besew hager laye wedajun ato/ for the loss of my kinsmen in a foreign land Ketagesut hulum yalefal/2// with patience all shall pass Gin eskiyalef yalefal/ though great is the toil until it does Ayezosh enatachin ejig atikefi/ be consoled our mother do not despair Yihen yechinqun qen betsenat elefi/ pass this day of suffering with perseverance Dineget endezebet tarik yilewetal/ history changes sudden and fickle Yemayetewish neguss liredash yimetal/ and your faithful King will come to your aide. Christ is Risen! Selam everyone It’s the eve of the feast of the Transfiguration in the Ethiopian Calendar, for those that share a similar calendar, I wish a blessed feast of Transfiguration! and I wanted to share a bit of the tradition one would see in Ethiopia on this day along what is more of a traditional way of celebratory song . I have tried to paraphrase some of the information I got from the book ‘the History of the Ethiopian Church’ by By the His Grace the late Archbishop of Showa Abune Gorgoriyos (M.A) of Eternal Memory. This is the day our Lord reveled the Light of His Divinity and the Glory of His Majesty. This feast day is celebrated every August 13 E.C. this feast day also has another name among the faithful: it is called ‘Buhe’. The name Buhe (uncovered, bared, bold) might have come from the fact that this is a time when the gloominess of the winter starts to give way to the light of the spring. As the Ethiopian saying goes ‘ after buhe there is no winter, and after the rooster crows there is no more night’. However in Palestine this time of the year is a time of summer where hardly any clouds are seen. In our country the children before the approach of this feast day start to weave ropes into whips and crack those making loud thunderous sounds usually in unexpected moments which can be scary to unsuspecting people. They do this to symbolize how like thunder the voice of God is and how the three apostles were terrified and fell on the ground. The mothers in preparation for this feast day’s traditional meal (the traditional Ethiopian wheat bread) they take special care in preparing the wheat for the bread. On the eve of the feast day (August 12) the neighborhood children will go from house to house singing ‘buhe, buhe,’ and with different traditional creative lyrics they will sing about the day. The household they went to the mothers will give them the bread prepared for that purpose and the children will sing the thanks giving and blessing part of the traditional songs and will go to the next house. On the eve night most neighborhoods light campfires to remember the Light of Tabor. This feast is very special to the traditional Students of the Church, they go around villages collecting what they need for the preparation of the feast and since the villagers know the tradition they give them in abundance. The students then will prepare a feast from what they have gathered and serve it after the Divine Liturgy for the faithful who came to attend the Liturgy. And within the church this is the day where we get to pick our drums and cymbals we have put away for the fast and celebrate with joy then we will put them away again after this day until the feast of the Assumption of the Most Pure Theotokos. Well this might perhaps help a little bit to understand what one is seeing if ever one finds oneself in Ethiopia on this day http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zd3ol0PJNDU&feature=relatedO come o come our God on a Pillar of Clouds / amlakachin na na beameede demena O come o come Immanuel for You are The Light!/ Ammanuel na na birehan nehena Blessed land of Tabor and Hermon / tabor harmonem yetadelech mekan On it is revealed the Divine Light/ yetegeletebat yemelekot birehan From within the clouds the Father testified/ Abim mesekere bedemena sale Saying this is My Beloved Son/ yemiwedew lije yihe new iyale He said hear Him to the whole world./ ersun simut bilo le alem tenagere Mosses from those who knew death and Elijah from those that did not/ kemotut muse eliyas ke heyawan They stood on his sides and gave witness/ qomew mesekeru beqegn begiraw For Peter John and James / petros, yohanis, yakob hulachew God revealed His Glorious Majesty/ amlak getinetun geleto yasayachew Blessed are their eyes that saw Him/ yekeberu nachew yayut ayenochachew Blessed land of Tabor and Hermon / tabor harmonem yetadelech mekan On it is revealed the Divine Light/ yetegeletebat yemelekot birehan O come o come our God on a Pillar of Clouds / amlakachin na na beameede demena O come o come Immanuel for You are The Light!/ Ammanuel na na birehan nehena And I too desire as Peter did/ enem emegnalehu yepetrosin mignot To live with Him in His heavenly dwelling/ abero lemenor besemayu bet And desire to be fed the milk of His Word./ degemom lememegeb yeqalun wetet The blessing part…Year after year – may it be renewed/ amet awedamet- degemina amet Grace and blessing—year after year -may it be renewed/ tsega bereket-- amet degemina amet Truly He has given us - year after year – may it be renewed/ setonal be ewenet- amet degemina amet With the Ray of His Light—year after year- may it be renewed/ beberehanu tsedal - amet degemina amet He has illumined our lives – year after year- may it be renewed/ hiwotachin bera - amet degemina amet For all time in History—year after year – may it be renewed/ hulum bezemenu tarik iyesera- amet degemina- amet His Church will remember—year after year- may it be renewed/ bebetechristian yinoral sizeker- amet degemina amet The wonder our Lord –year after year- may it be renewed/ dinq yetederegew yegetachin sira - amet degemina amet Revealed on Mt Tabor—year after year- may it be renewed/ be tabor terara- amet degemina amet May He grant us see this day next year—year after year—may it be renewed/ le ametu yaderesen -amet degemina amet May He keep us well—year after year—may it be renewed/ hulachin bedehena- amet degemina amet May our Lord grant us to meet in peace—year after year—may it be renewed/ selam yagenagnen-amet degemina amet May He grant us health—year after year—may it be renewed./ getachin betena - amet degemina amet Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit both now and ever and unto the ages of ages amen! Doxologies: St Severus (Patriarch of Antioch)The confirmed leaders, the great defenders, the winners of the fight, the bright lamps.
+ The pillar of Orthodoxy, is Abba Severus the patriarch, the teacher of the rational, flock of Christ.
Your upright teaching, defeated the heretics, like the two edged sword, through the power of Christ.
+ Likewise we magnify You, with David the psalmist, You are the priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.
Every knee bows to the Lord, every tongue blesses Him, the glory of God has spread, and filled the whole world.
+ Pray to the Lord on our behalf, O teachers of the Orthodoxy, Severus and Dioscorus, that He may forgive us our sins.

A modern Arabic rendition of the Sunday Vigil service hymn known as, 'The Psali for Jesus Christ': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUhKdg90NJo&The on-screen translation is rather poor. A better translation of the hymn can be read here: http://tasbeha.org/hymn_library/view/1246

selam lekulekemu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQs7GovUcqw&feature=autoplay&list=ULKTIKiLWJUts&lf=mfu_in_order&playnext=12Have you ever sung and danced from a roof top or hanging from a fence or a tree? I mean the spiritual kind of song ; you might like to see some do it. It might remind you of what Zacchaeus did to see Christ among the crowd of people, it does that to me. well there is somekind of order to the chaos you see and I always loved the crowd’s unrehearsed spontaneous selection of hymns and coordination on these processions. Because of the editing they switch the hymns quickly with each I cannot translate it all, but the feast is that of epiphany the day before, the feast of canna, and St. Michael on this day that you see. As you can see they attempt to sing about all those feasts. The ark on this procession is that of St. Michael. You might see the icon of St Michael as it is raised high the youth chanting ‘ersu new Michael! Ersu new Michael!’/ ‘it is him St. Michael! it is him St. Michael!’ they also chant,’ look at him shining like the sun ‘ / eyut siyabera ende jember’ they switch and start to sing egziabher yimesegen lezih yaderesen’ Thanks be to God for letting us see this day’ then it switches again and they say ‘ anchi yordanos minigna tadelesh ye egziabher menfes kelay werdobish yealem medihanit tetemeqebish/ and you Jordan how lucky you are for the Spirit of God descended from heaven and the Savior of the world got baptized in you!.’ At some point they say, be ede yohanis tetemqe Iyesus nazrawi semayawi be ede midrawi/ by the hand of John, Jesus the Nazarene got baptized lo the heavenly by the hand of the earthly/ there is a lot of halleluiahs going on … well that was just a snapshot of what goes on during this feast. Hope you enjoyed it somehow selam to u all

Biruk awede amet! Melkam addis amet! Enqutatash! Enkuan le Qidus Yohannis beal beselam aderessachihu! Happy New Year! As part of the celebration of the New Year, this time being spring time in Ethiopia young girls and children go around form house to house bringing flowers and singing. Little boys draw New Year well-wishing paintings, and go around giving it to people. On the eve of the New Year, the celebratory torches are lit campfires made and people sing around them in thanksgiving for the ending of the winter and the coming of the spring and the New Year. I thought I would share one of the songs of the young girls with you; the tune is traditional so it’s a public melody, I used to enjoy hearing the high pitched voice of the girls singing here and there as I passed through neighborhoods. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyZDfGOS2b8&feature=relatedEsey des des yibelen/2x/ addisu amet metalin des des yibelen/2x/ yea let us be joyful and rejoice, for the new year has come for us let us rejoice Ho beln metan ho bilen /2x/ getoch alu bilen/ together we come rejoicing and trusting we will meet the lord of this house Ho belen metan ho bilen/2x/ emete alu bilen/ together we come rejoicing and trusting we will meet the lady of this house Ho bilen metan ho bilen/2x/ zemen metual bilen/, together we come rejoicing because the New Year is here Abebayehosh/2x/- lemlem/2x/ / we have seen the flowers/ fresh and green Balenjeroche- lemlem gibu betera-lemlem / enter my dear friends one by one ke egziabher meqedes-lemlem / in to the Temple of God keza terara- lemlem/ on to that Mountain enditadenqu-lemlem / so you may marvel yamlakin sira-lemlem / at what God has done hiwot yagegnal-lemlem/ for Life is given ersun yetera- lemlem/ to those who call His Name abeba abeba feka zemen siteka/2x/ the flower! the flower has bloomed when the new year arrived abebayehosh-lemlem/2x/ / we have seen the flower –fresh and green kiremt alefe- lemlem/ the winter has passed chelemaw tefa- lemlem/ the darkness is no more yemeseqelu qal-lemlem / the word of the Cross honelin tesefa-lemlem/ has become our hope enagelgelew-lemlem/ let us serve Him betu gebten-lemlem/ entering into His dwelling place tinish tiliqum-lemlem/ young and old alike teselefen-lemlem/ enter together abeba abeba feka zemen siteka / the flower , the flower has bloomed when the new year arrived abebayehosh lemlem/ we have seen the flower-fresh and green/2x/ yanin Kunene- lemlem/ that exile zemene fida-lemlem/ the years of our slavery yemotu werat- lemlem/ the reign of death yamidre beda-lemlem/ and desolation lik ende kiremit-lemlem / just like the winter hede tegefo-lemlem/ it passed cast away tsehay wetalin-lemlem/ the sun has risen for us chelemaw alefo-lemlem/ the darkness has passed abeba abebaw feka zemen siteka/ the flower , the flower has bloomed when the new year arrived abebayehosh –lemlem/ we have seen the flower-fresh and green/2x/ yihew mesekerem-lemlem/ behold September yihew tsehayi-lemlem/ behold the Sun nigusu werdo-lemlem/ the king has descended kelay seamy-lemlem/ from the heavens above awede amet hone-lemlem/ the herald of the new year desta selam-lemlem/ joy and peace fiqir sigelet-lemlem / when love is reveled kearyam-lemlem/ from the heavens abeba abeba feka zemen siteka/ the flower , the flower has bloomed when the new year arrived abebayehosh-lemlem/ we have seen the flower-fresh and green/2x/ yihew abeba-lemlem/ behold the flowers lemlem qetema-lemlem/ the green and lush grass addisu zemen-lemlem/ the new year amitutalina-lemlem/ has brought with it berun kifetu-lemlem/ lift up the gates mekuwanintochu -lemlem/ You rulers yekibir nigus-lemlem / the King of Glory yigeba betachihu-lemlem/ let Him enter into your house abeba abeba feka zemen siteka/ the flower , the flower has bloomed when the new year arrived abebayehosh-lemlem/ we have seen the flower-fresh and green/2x/ betachihu yimula-lemlem / may your home be filled selam desita-lemlem/ with peace and joy tesefachihu ersu-lemlem/ and may your Hope be Him yehulu geta-lemlem/ the Lord of All kezemen zemen-lemlem/ from year to year yashegagerachihu-lemlem/ may He let us pass yeshibetin zewed -lemlem/ the crown of grey hair yishelimachihu-lemlem/ may He give to you abeba abeba feka zemen siteka/ the flower , the flower has bloomed when the new year arrived yishetal doro doro yemamiye guwaro/2/from your kitchen comes the delightful smell of your chicken stew my dear mother yishetal tej tej yababeye dej/2/ and my dear father, your court smells of the sweet honey wine abeye ehe! degemom emameye metahu beselamta kebet alu biye enkuan le addisu amet aderesot biye/ O my dear father, and o my dear mother, I come in peace hoping to find you home and to say, thank the Lord for granting you to see the new year. keberew yiqoyun keberew yekibrin wenegel semetew yebegun siga beletew yamlakin fitun ayetew kebrew/ in glory may you await us yea in glory, having heard the Gospel of Glory, having ate the Flesh of the Lamb, having seen the face of God yea in such glory may you await us next year too. .......//..... selam lekulekemu

I really want to know where to get good CD's or high-quality downloads of this Mezmur stuff- it's awesome. I know you can get the MP3's from Youtube but the sound quality isn't as good.

Alright, since writing about Ahmed Gragn and Ethiopia in this thread has kind of bummed me out a little, I did a little search for Oromo Orthodox mezmur, and with great joy found some really amazing stuff by Deacon Geremu Bayesa: Haalle LuuyyaaKidane MihretKulkulu MichaelThe Oromo are a formerly majority-Christian people who were mostly converted to Islam in the 14th century. The Oromo are a Cushitic people, speaking a language related to Somali, Afar, etc. These recordings are very special because Protestants are active in converting Oromo such that most of what you'll find if you look for Oromo Christian hymns are Protestant gospel songs. If there exist more Orthodox hymns in Cushitic languages, I'd love to hear them... (Hiwot? Habte? )

yes its beautiful ! I know people who can speak Oromufa but they have gone back home, when they return I will ask them to help me to translate into Amharic so I can translate it into English. you can find the whole CD mezmur of Deacon Geremu on this website http://www.tewahedo.org/g_m.html I have not found mezmur in any other language besides ,oromufa and tigrigna, and I have very limited understanding of tigrigna and I do not want to mess up the translation so I have asked my dear Eritrean friend to help me translate, so I will try to post some tigrigna mezmur both from Ethiopia and Eritrean zemariyans as I am able. I know there are quite a few oromufa mezmurs out there, mahebere kidusan had published one album in oromufa that i know of, but apparently they have not found their way on line yet. there is a need though to use all the major languages of the south to make mezmurs for exactly the reasons you mentioned. blessed day

Selam lekemu The finding of the Holy Cross is celebrated in Ethiopia on September 26/27on leap year or in Ethiopian calendar September 17 starting from the eve on the 16th. This day marks the first day of the 6 month it took to excavate the Holy Cross, St. Helena found the Holy Cross on Megabit 10 ( March 19). It is commemorated on both Months with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy and the singing of Hymns. However in addition to all of these on September 16 evening there is a great procession to the Holy Cross square, in Addis Ababa, and in remembrance of St. Helena’s using the smoke of the incense from the bonfire as an indicator of where the Holy Cross was buried there is a bonfire lit with a sign of the cross made with ‘meskel daises’ a bright yellow daisy that blooms at that time and covers the fields everywhere you see with golden hue. Sunday School Choirs from all over the city come to the Square singing the message of the Cross, the Exultation of the Cross, re enacting the search of the Holy Cross by St. Helena, carrying the flags of all sovereign nations of the world as part of the message of the cross being the brotherhood of mankind and as a reminder of the message of peace and love it brings the world. This day is one of the National Holidays so people gather in thousands to celebrate it, the day of the demera/ lighting of the fire is the eve of meskel, The celebration is in every Orthodox Christian home and parish churches also where bonfires with the sign of the cross are prepared and after being blessed by priests they are lit and the celebratory singing ensues , and after the fire burns down and people go to their homes only to return in the morning to get the ash and mark themselves on their foreheads with a sign of the cross, so when you go into town on meskel day you see people with the sign of the Cross marked with ash on their foreheads everywhere. Here is one mezmur about the Finding of the True Cross. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YWGEf5im8cEseye elele belu tegegne meseqelu/2x/ Yeah rejoice and ululate joyfully for the Cross has been found Yetil gidgeda-- yeferesebet /with it is broken down the wall of enmity Sew ke egziabher gar--yetareqebet/ with it man is reconciled with God Ye egziabher lij--yenegesebet/ on it the Son of God was enthroned Victorious King Yemot abegaz -- yewedeqebet/with it death is abolished Eseye elele belu tegegne meseqelu/2x/ Yeah rejoice and ululate joyfully for the Cross has been found Ayehud beqinat --mesqelun qeberew/ In envy the Jews buried the Cross Biqeberut enkuan --be qoshashachew/ although they buried it with their refuse Getan meqawem-- silemayechilu /because they cannot stop the Lord Yihew tegegne --weta meseqelu/ behold the Cross is found and is exulted Eseye elele belu tegegne meseqelu/2x/ Yeah rejoice and ululate joyfully for the Cross has been found Degu kirakos-- shimagelew/ blessed kirakos the old man Elenin merat --bedemeraaw/ Lead Helena with the burning incense Geta bersu laye --bemeseqelu/ for the Lord was Crucified on it Tisu segede --wede meseqelu/ the smoke bowed towards the Cross. Thank you for the link to Deacon Geremu's album, Hiwot. I'm in heaven now! I have not found mezmur in any other language besides ,oromufa and tigrigna, and I have very limited understanding of tigrigna and I do not want to mess up the translation so I have asked my dear Eritrean friend to help me translate, so I will try to post some tigrigna mezmur both from Ethiopia and Eritrean zemariyans as I am able. That would be wonderful! I have always wondered, since first being exposed to Tewahedo mezmur several years ago, about mezmur in other languages in Ethiopia. I guess Afan Oromo, Amharic and Tigrinya are it, huh? That is too bad. What about the Southern people who are majority Christian, like the Dorze? It would be amazing to hear their polyphonic singing in mezmur...maybe someday...

dzheremi, you are very welcome! It would be beautiful if there would be mezmur albums released in those languages, it might be my lack of information but I will ask when I call back home if they do have Cd's on any other languages. if they do not I pray they do soon because it is absolutely imperative that the faithful be served in their own language. especially with mezmurs.
