Moscow Patriarchate positive on relations with Vatican
MOSCOW. July 5 (Interfax) - The Moscow Patriarchate said that
relations between the Orthodox and the Catholics have received a new
impetus.
"Relations (between the Roman Catholic and Russian Orthodox
churches - Interfax) have received a strong new impetus due to the
positions taken by Benedict XVI and Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and all
Russia. They think that both Churches should do everything in their
power to meet true hopes of people," the chairman of the Moscow
Patriarchate Department for external church relations Metropolitan
Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad said at a news conference on the
results of the World Religious Summit in Moscow.
He also noted that bilateral contacts and the participation of
Vatican representatives in the Moscow religious summit showed that both
Churches are advancing in the right direction.
Speaking about the forum of religious leaders, Metropolitan Kirill
underscored the need for a platform for dialogue between religious
leaders and politicians. Yet, he believes, "there is a need for a
platform, but no platform as yet."
"It seems to me that the UN platform would be appropriate," the
metropolitan said.
