Announcement from the Dean
by John H. Erickson - Saturday,  20 May 2006, 01:43 PM
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear members of the seminary community,

Christ is risen!

By seminary Statute, the Dean of the seminary is elected by the seminary's
Board of Trustees, normally for an initial five-year term.  If, in the
second-to-last year of his term, he indicates his availability for reelection
to an additional term, the Board of Trustees establishes a Dean Reappointment
Committee.  This committee reports to the Board, which then decides whether
to reelect the Dean for an additional term.

Last November I indicated my willingness to be considered for a second term.
The Board, meeting yesterday, May 19, voted not to reelect me.  Therefore, in
accordance with seminary Statutes, a Dean Search Committee is being
established.

I have been honored to serve as Dean of St. Vladimir's Seminary for the past
nearly four years, and I look working with you for one more year in that
position.  I have appreciated the support and friendship that so many of you
have shown.  I am confident that your support and friendship will continue
even when I am no longer Dean and simply a professor of church history
again.  Meanwhile, I would encourage all of you to cooperate with the Dean
Search Committee as it begins its important work.

Asking for your prayers,

Yours in Christ,

Fr. John H. Erickson

Yes. Hard to believe that he would not know what the outcome of this would be before he put his name in for another term. Wonder what politics lay behind this?

I don't know if it is politics as more that I know several persons (well, priests in my area) that think he is way too liberal in his theology...or at least he was when named Dean originally.  I have no idea if his own position has changed since he was ordained Deacon and then Priest (when was he ordained to the Diaconate?).

Maybe it was the attitude of the board that Fr. John Erickson was always going to be a "temporary" Dean to suceed Fr. Hopko.

You haven't received the May/June issue of the OCA newspaper yet?  News of Fr. John's ordination to the diaconate is in there.  (He was evidently ordained to the priesthood after the newspaper went to press.)

I find it hard to believe that the real reason is due to liberal theology.  They had no problems with Fr. Hopko, and he doesn't even believe that the Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple ever happened!
