PATRIARCH ALEXY BLESSES THE OPENING OF ORTHODOX BROADCASTING IN THE KEMEROVO REGION

The Radonezh radio station has begun broadcasting in the Kemerovo Region. Transmission will last from 9 p.m. to midnight every day. Thus, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia, the joint project of the Kemerovo diocese and the Radonezh Orthodox educational society to open Orthodox broadcasting in the region has been realized.

"I have been delighted to learn that through your efforts the Radonezh Orthodox radio station has began working in your diocese", says His Holiness in his letter to Archbishop Sophronius of Kemerovo and Novokuznetzk "We can see churches and monasteries being restored throughout the country and the Holy Orthodox faith returning gradually to people's minds and hearts. It is all the more important that church preaching should be broadened through the Russian mass media today".

His Holiness also sent a letter to the Keverovo Governor Aman Tuleyev, thanking him for his priceless aid in realizing the project. "The beginning of regular broadcasting by the Radonezh radio station in your region is a great step forward in the task of reviving spiritual foundations in the life of Russian society. It is gratifying that the governmental officials in the Kemerovo Region are aware of their responsibility for the revival of true spirituality in our much-suffered land", the Patriarch's letter says.

In his message to the Orthodox in the Kemerovo Region on the occasion of launching an Orthodox radio station in their region, His Holiness noted, "The Radonezh radio is heard not only by our compatriots but also Orthodox people living in other countries. It is gratifying that there are more opportunities today for church preaching in the Russian airGǪ It is necessary that people should return to the moral and spiritual traditions that nourished our history so instructive to us today and should be asserted in the faith of our forefathers who cherished it throughout the millennium-long history of the Fatherland and the Orthodox Church in Great Russia. And here the role of the Church's word brought to multitudes through the mass media becomes as important as never before".

At present the Radonezh radio station broadcasts on medium waves in Moscow, St. Petersburg, central regions, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk and on the VHF wave band in Orenburg and Kemerovo.
