This situation that after a long time you're hugged by a male... And that's the head of an autocephalus Church
(yesterday our parish was visited by metropolitan Sava, as st. Thomas Sunday is our second parishional feast, and it was even more solemn than usual, as His Eminence was celebrating his 80th birthday; after Liturgy he noticed me, asked how the things are going on, hugged me and asked how to say "Christ is risen" in Arabic, so I said, and he told me to teach that other people).
Pray for persecuted Christians, especially in Serbian Kosovo and Raška, Egypt and Syria

My Orthodox liturgical blog "For what eat, while you can fast" in Polish (videos featuring chants in different languages)

The translator also insists on using the word "cash" in several places. Kind of hilariously jarring.

They could have used "do not man up on wine" or something? IDK, poor word choices was always one thing that bothered me on NETS, but I had never come across this kind of bizarre.  :o

P.S.: Reminds me of a parish I attended occasionally where the reader had to clearly withhold giggles chanting a translation of Psalm 91(92):6 that read something like "the stupid understands nothing, neither does the idiot". These anecdotes give us good example of why there's something like liturgical vocabulary.

Actually, "man up on wine" sounds kind of strange to my eye/ear, too.

In my limited understanding, Sirach is one of the strangest texts in the LXX. It's a very wooden Greek translation of a Hebrew original that we only have fragments of. The translator (Benjamin G. Wright) says in his intro that he wanted to maintain that awkwardness in some places where the NRSV ("Do not try to prove your strength by wine-drinking") smoothes it over.

So, maybe it's a win for replicating the Greek or Hebrew poetic structure or something (I can't find an interlinear-style rendering of the Greek online), but I have to admit that I didn't understand what the verse actually meant until I looked it up for comparison just now. I just thought that it had something to do with acting stupid after a couple of drinks (the following verse about drunken arguments might have influenced me there).

Maybe it makes me a Philistine, but I kind of like the Good News Translation's rendering the best out of the ones that I've seen- "Don't try to prove your manhood by how much you can drink. Wine has been the ruin of many."

Hall's cough drops have started printing little motivational speeches on their wrappers (or maybe they've always done that and this is just the first time I've noticed).

"A Pep Talk in Every DropTM"

"It's Yours for the Taking."

"Go Get It!"

"You can do it and you know it."

"Put your game face on."

"Buckled down and push forth!"

And the strangest one considering that I can barely talk right now- "Let's hear your battle cry."

I thought it might be more like proving you're a big guy by drinking a lot. Pretty much what most teenagers do nowadays?

My favorite is still this one from the HTM Psalter version of Ps. 151: "My brothers were big and good"

The NETS seems a bit better: "My brothers were handsome and big"

Though I like the NRSV the best: "My brothers were handsome and tall"

Now whether "tall" captures the full meaning of the bigness mentioned, I don't know.

I translated it as "Meus irmãos [eram] bons e altos" in my ongoing translation of the LXX Psalter, which stands for "good and tall". But looking again I should have translated it as "handsome and tall", kalós can mean both "beautiful" and "good" and in this context it seems David is eulogising their physical traits in contrast to his own spiritual traits. It was one of my first translations since I was excited about translating such a rare Psalm, so my skills were way too basic. HTM apparently took it the same way.

The LXX has “butter” I believe. This led several hymnographers to compare the incarnation to milk curdling into butter or cheese.

Really? Huh.

NETS has "fertile," so I guess I just took it at face value (different translator for Psalms than for Sirach, I think Pietersma himself did Psalms).

Liddell-Scott has "fat" as a primary meaning (although this would probably mean basically butter in the ancient world if not directly referring to fat attached to muscle), but it has been used as "fertile" since at least Homer. In this case, the translator should use other ancient languages (specially Hebrew) for disambiguation. Hebrew wouldn't give a straight answer since it says "a hill of peaks" (har-gavnunnim), but this kind of insinuates abundance.

I always interpreted the verse as being a poetic way to refer to general bountifulness. That seems to be about right, then?
"Verily they that seek Thee, Lord, and keep the canons of Thy Holy Church shall never want any good thing.”

Yeah, I think so. Same reason that "fat" has become idiomatic English for "abundance" as in "fat of the land" (which also shows up in the KJV in Genesis 45:17-18).

In Portuguese there is the commonplace expression "time of fat cows" (referring to Genesis 41) to talk about past wealthy times.

American politics really mess up people's heads around the world. The party leader of the recently arrested former president made a video from al-Jazeera, and rumour has spread that al-Jazeera is a terrorist organisation and it will attack Brazil allied with the deposed party. I mean, it sounds Arabic, so it must be terrorist, not?

It's imaginable how this kind of paranoia appears in the country of 9/11 and Middle Eastern bombing, but for a country housing more Lebanese people than Lebanon (one of them our president), with minor aspects of Middle Eastern culture absorbed by the general population, this outright association is pretty strange.

Especially for someone like me who tends to branch off tabs to watch different videos one after another. It gets kind of fractal sometimes lol...

Working in the administrative side of Wikipedia sometimes tests my adulthood. Some vandal started systematically replacing pictures of extinct animals with penises and I LOL'd very hard when I saw the denouncement. I hope at least that the admin who blocked him had good chuckles.
"May the Lord our God remember in His kingdom all Holy Catholic Apostolic Church, which heralds the Word of Truth and fearlessly offers and distributes the Holy Oblation despite human deficiencies and persecutions moved by the powers of this world, in all time and unto the ages of ages."

Anyhow when God was asked he said Eastern Orthodox is true Church and not Catholic Church. So come home and enjoy.

And lo, it came to pass that a Salon article about #changethechannel did drop. and it lighted upon the ground with all the force of a lightly tossed tissue paper and behold, there was great wailing and gnashing of teeth on Twitter over what reads pretty much like just an exercise in spindoctoring.

Posted a lengthy post on hell and apocatastasis on the Faith Issues forum the other day. It disappeared inexplicably. Contacted the moderator but haven't heard back. Weird. Anyone have any idea what might have happened?

I'm starting to wonder if there's something wrong with the servers or something. There's at least one thread I know that inexplicably disappeared recently, too.

My post on hell and apocatastasis was moved from Faith Issues to Religious Topics. You can find it here:

She’s not a princess.
Mor Ephrem is a nice guy.  Just say sorry and it will all be ok. Say I had things that were inside troubling me but I didn't know how to express appropriately. I will not behave that way again but I am seeking help.

thank you so much Mor ephrem you are a hero!

No worries. In a few years she will be Queen, and none of this will matter.
