Well it's not just that. Where I live, there is no mass transit because it's just too much room to cover, and we live below sea level. And people have to get to work. Yes you could say it's a matter of urban sprawl, and that it really doesen't make a hill of beans in the grand scheme. But this is our hill. And these are our beans!

Bummer. Carpooling it is, then! My city has a pitiful excuse for a bus system. It takes about 3 bus changes and 4 hours to get anywhere.

Springfield, MO. Funny thing is, it's a town of 150,000 which covers only ~100 square miles. It really could have a much, much better mass transit system. Monorail, anyone?

Unfortunately, I got you topped.
Houston, Texas.
Monorail has been debated and deflated.
Busses have been added, but are about as slow as frozen honey.
No chance of a subway system.
I say we traven in tubes!

I would be all for a Metrolink type system. It would be great for commuters from nearby towns (and Mr. Y who commutes out of town).

I'd ride a metro to work! As it is, I carpool at least 3 times at week with a work friend. However, we're in a special situation. The hospital where I work is under major construction, and we are required to drive to a parking lot several miles south of the hospital to park and ride a shuttle in to work. It's actually several miles out of the way for both my friend and me, so we make the best of it by carpooling when possible. Plus, it's more fun to ride to work with a friend. If I were super-cool, I'd bike to work. I remember EofK saying that she did so when she lived at my place and worked at the hospital. You know, it sounds almost as if I am stalking you, EofK! First I move in your old home, then I start working at your workplace. . . what's next?

^ LOL! Yeah, I miss biking to work except it scared me to death to try crossing the major roads. Springfield is not known for conscientious drivers. It's almost exactly a 2 mile bike there, so you'd get a good workout. It's mostly flat so it won't kill your legs and *bonus* you can park right by the front doors!

I about as lazy as the next fella, but I have often considered whether I could walk more. To our ancestors, a mile walk was nothing - some even walked from the dock in New York City to the western frontier (Colorado, California, Oregon, etc.). The Church I am currently attending on a regular basis is about an even 2 miles - not that far to walk. It is in a very bad neighborhood (a federal officer was shot there a few months back - an other crimes are common and expected), though.

Our ancestors lived shorter lives and and got every disease in the book. I think it was all that walking Anyway, If it's either stay inside and get out of shape or get shot while trying to improve your health, I say order pizza and watch EWTN!

Just buy a Model 1911 and take a stroll, it may be more fun than you think.

I knew this guy once who was so fast that he was faster than a speeding bullet. That's because he ate his spinach and exercised every day. He became more powerful than a locomotive. He could also jump over buildings in a single leap (he got tired of just jump rope). I can't remember his name, though.

That was me before I discovered Chinese Delivery. Now I'm about as fast as a speeding chihuahua, more powerful than a single locust, and am able to leap tall bean bags in a single bound....after a few trys.

Yay, lolcats! The best website for those, by far, is I Can Haz Cheezburger?I walked home from work once when my car was in the shop. It was amazing to experience all the sounds (and smells) of the route home. There was a house I usually pass by without thinking that I never noticed had a flower garden in the back yard. Absolutely beautiful, and to think I had breezed past it for so many years.
