It kinda scares me that so many people mentioned drugs in their conversations before looking into these pins that Facebook's algorithms found it a useful connection. So I made a joke ("this is worse for your health than coke") and Facebook thought "Hey! Maybe you'd like some pins to store the sweet drugs you're talking about?"

I got smacked with nostalgia for cigarette machines.

^Facebook suggested? That's random. I never saw anything that inappropriate when I still was on FB.

There was a weird time when FB started suggesting butt plugs even though I don't watch porn or search for sex toys. Guess the robots saw how many children I have and figured I was down to clown.

Apparently, you don't just have to be careful about what you do on the Internet. You have to be careful about what you did before the Internet, too. My brother just sent me a photo of my father from 1979, wearing a shirt that said, "Where in the hell is (my hometown)?"

His comment was that it's amazing what's available online.

I like it. Ivan wasn't good but he was the Emperor at the Stoglavy Sobor
“God,”
The words rumbled:
“There is much suffering,
But the church is alive. "

“How long, Archpriest, are we to suffer thus?” I answered: “Until our very death, Markovna!” And she replied, with a sigh: “So be it, Petrovich, let us plod on.” - Life of Avvakum by Himself

Nastasya, Nastasya, be
patient and do not cry:
Not every happiness
Comes in the clothing of fortune.

St. Avvakum, pray for us!

St. Ambrose, pray for us!

Convert. I belong to ACROD. "Patriarchate of Johnstown" is a joke.
There is a Johnstown. In Greece. No joking

Out of curiosity, did St. Gregory of Nyssa ever preach there?

If there was a video of Ivan being surprised on his birthday by a kitten from his wife, that'd totally go viral.

This is not the faith of our fathers!

Wait, my fathers were Catholic, so maybe it is?

Aha, but we turned towards the resplendent light of orthodoxy!

Huh, but now that I think of it, we are not to overturn the markers of our fathers... am I so bold as to think I know better than they?

Anyway, please to translate? None of my family could ever read that!

I've sometimes wondered why perfectly normal political ideas turn weird when they travel across the pond. American politics seem rather polarized or extreme even compared to their European counterparts

I doubt even most Americans really understand their own country. I certainly don't pretend to. It's a weird and stupid place.

One of the ladies volunteering at the food pantry with me this morning was wearing a "Who is John Galt?" T-shirt.
Blessed Nazarius practiced the ascetic life. His clothes were tattered. He wore his shoes without removing them for six years.

THE OPINIONS HERE MAY NOT REFLECT THE ACTUAL OR PERCEIVED ORTHODOX CHURCH

Take a breath, read Ecclesiastes 1:9.

That is funny.

She certainly is not, fortunately.

Often in fiction about the middle ages or ancient times you'll see people cutting themselves or allowing themselves to be cut, to show lack of fear, or as a cultural rite, or whatever. Did this kind of stuff actually happen as often as depicted? I'd think people would have been a little more sober-minded about such things.

This appears in a famous Brazilian book staged in the early 20th century in the hinterlands, and out of context it seemed something pretty normal. One of the main characters bets a piece of the flesh of his back to show honesty. These places were in the Middle Ages until one generation ago, so it probably applies lol
