When you say brushing back and forth, you are not talking sideways correct? But in an up and down motion?

Hmm so next to no force eh? Well I've been doing it wrong for years then.

And I assume what kind of toothpaste doesn't matter, except avoid the whitening ones.

So how the hell do you get your teeth whiter then? I heard the strips are terribly bad for you as well.

Sideways / up and down shouldn't really matter actually if you do it, but it is probably better to go sideways when hitting the gum line.

Then if you want to go crazy, brush a stroke at a time from the beginning of the gums toward the teeth. Just once.

The latter is growing CW but not proven.

Age with dignity.

Don't stain them in the first place.

And realize teeth ain't white.

Don't whiten them. Maybe the UV stuff works, I dunno. I don't care. I am really not nearly as vain as you. I don't mean that meanly, just how it is.

There is whitening btw and whitening. You can have a more of a mechanical method of doing and a more chemical method.

The chemical method is much more effective, but I promise you, many people have problems with it. I ran out of regular "toothpaste" (baking soda / salt) and found some whitening stuff someone gave me.

After a few days my gums were bleeding and the like. In a way it was good as it sent me to a periodontist where I found out that while I never had trouble with my teeth, my hubris in exploiting my dental health had caused gum disease or it is caused by some autoimmune thing.

You might want to try a paste that is more of a gentle polishing agent.

I only floss properly once a day and brush twice. I just brush to "shine" and whiten my teeth.

Both.  I have a 3/4 length leather jacket from 1997.  I'd replace it except there are no 3/4 length jackets available.

Speaking of vanity...

How do you style your hair? From your picture it looks like it grows out the same way as mine but I don't know what to do with my bangs that won't make it seem like a little kid's bowl cut. I could just get it cut really short like I've been doing but I really wanna grow it out and try the dumb ponytail idea I mentioned in my monkeytail thread.

I didn't see that thread . . . don't do a poney tail. Please.

It. is. the. worst.

Actually, I've gone to extremely short, I usually do in the summer, especially now since my allergies are crazy and I do some work in temperature control rooms which are stupidly hot. I sport a very short fade let it grow out till my cowlicks get insane. Repeat.

(EDIT: If you get a fade, do yourself a favor and let a black guy do it. You won't end up the three band buzz that most white guys are going to throw at you. And black dudes take their time and it feel quite nice. Typically the barber shop is cool with lotsa colorful talk.)

I understand what you are saying about the bowl cut thing (from my experience not from seeing you).

The way you get around that is legion, but obviously is not to wear a bowl cut.

If you are going to wear a medium to long hair cut the best thing you can do is let your hair grow longer, maybe an inch longer than you hope to have it. Then pay real money for a real cut. I am partial to getting it done with a straight razor as the stylist can add whatever degree of texture I would like.

(EDIT: Different than a fade obviously, but getting a good cut with a straight razor feels great as well. It is time consuming, but nearly like getting massage with cut.)

I have tons of hair but their are thin and straight as arrows, so there is a lot of ways for things to go wrong. (Hence the need for more than a little texture to avoid a very limp look or a bowl cut if I am wearing a conservative longer to medium cut.)

Once you have gotten a decent hair cut a few dozen times, you might be able to do it yourself if you are insane like me. I've done nearly everything you can do with hair like mine. A buddy of mine I made was due to a compliment he gave me on my cut. He is a stylist and was curious who had done it.

I can't stand doing that anymore, so I usually sport a fade. My hair grow like a weed. So medium to long with beard in the cooler months. Really, I was missing both this weeks, it has been oddly cool.

I know, I was profiling. Lotta guys at work wear a fade of some sort (or just run some clippers at one setting over their head).

I've been asked by more than a few of the more vain around me who does my fade. I am like go see a black guy. It is a matter of volume I suppose.

Funny story, the one place I go is a quasi-Black Muslim / 5% place. (They don't restrict their cutters to Muslims only but you get the blackboard with the True Mathematics of the day.)

Anyhoo, the first time I popped in. The guy looks at me and turns to a poster and says: what do you want?

The poster had about 19 varieties of fades on black guys and one white dude wearing horn-rimmed glasses with very slicked back hair. The consumant. He had a pocket protector, I kid you not.

I had longer hair and a rather long beard. When I told him the sorta fade I wanted and shave, I think he was very relieved.

One could argue I guess.

The black barber shop is a whole thing in black areas of America. Classic hairstyling is quite different for white and black men. So you have often shops which cater to one or the other. America is cut along racial divides at times more ways than one.

When I have longer hair, a white woman or gay man cuts it.

Shorter, a black man.

Or I do either myself. I guess in my heart I am gay black woman.

It depends on what kind of leather jacket you have. Some are wormer than others. Generally speaking they keep you safe from wind but at least in here you need a sweater or something in order to survive through autumn and spring.

Well, there are only three barbers who work there, and they're all white, and most of the customers are too. It seemed apt enough a descriptor. I don't think they'd turn down a black customer, but I'm not sure they'd be able to do well, particularly if he had larger or longer hair. But hey, I'm sure you could get worse for seven bucks.

And none should here either. A barber is a licensed trade. $7 makes me wonder if they are on the up and up.

Barbering requires more work and time training the cosmetology in most states. And I would never go to these chains that basically pay their stylists nothing but tips (which they get away with due to contracting rules and the folks working for on the job training).

Yeah, it's definitely not a chain. It may or may not be a money laundering operation. It's a good haircut for cheap though.

Let's be clear here, I am talking men's hair.

If you are "Asian", you better be looking for a fade of some sort. I can't imagine getting another sorta cut in a black barber shop.

A black guy in a white place? He is probably going to get a less quality cut.

Black hair and white are very different (I am generalizing). But you can get your hair cut wherever. There used to be a barber culture of sorts in America. It still thrives in black areas, if a black guy lives in a city, I can't see why they would go to a primarily white barber shop (which are becoming harder and harder to find, except for hacky ones in hipster neighborhoods or European style in business districts).

Thread is getting full of lulz. I was waiting for the hair talk.

Can we please get a pic of orthonorm in a fade? That would be awesome.

Let me give you a few tips I have learned over the years.

First of all, everybody should be limiting how much they shampoo a day. I used to shampoo my hair everyday and condition it. But now I only do it every 4th day. I'll get to the why in a second.

Try to get shampoo that does not have SLS (sodium laureth/lauryl sulfate). SLS is a hyper-powerful detergent that strips almost all of the natural oils from your hair. Natural oils add both volume and texture to your hair, as well as protect it from damage. (We evolved to have the stuff, so there's a probably a good reason to not try and overzealously remove it.) The reason SLS is in everything is because it is so cheap and easy to manufacture, so that means detergent companies can spend more dollars on loud marketing blitzes as opposed to making products that actually work.

Any shampoo that has the stuff is basically glorified dish soap and will dry the crap out of hair.

After switching to a non-SLS shampoo and holding out for a few weeks, my hair feels much healthier, softer, and thicker. You can do good with the L'Oreal EverStrong Sulfate-Free shampoo for like $6 dollars.

Now why every 4th day? In my prior dry climate (Colorado) it made my hair even dryer by shampooing every day. It's not necessary at all to shampoo your hair everyday, and if it's still dry I would recommend a conditioner after a wash. Leave in is good too, I go for the Argan Oil stuff (it's like $10 bucks online, wouldn't spend 30 bucks as you would in a store).

These days I just do a wash. I might condition here and there, but in the humid climate I'm at now it's not necessary. Seriously my hair looks the best it has ever been.

Oh and avoid ALL Great Clips, SuperCuts, every chain barbershop because they are terrible. Shop around to different salons and find out which stylist works best for you.

And be sure to tip good.

But my hair is incredibly fat. If I don't use shampoo at least every other day I'll go mad from the itch.

huh, when I was a kid grandma would wash my hair with homemade soap: lotsa pork fat plus lotsa caustic soda (sodium hydroxide).

Try to find a shampoo without SLS. It's going to be different, but your scalp will have to adjust itself.

And I would ween off the shampoo. You'll probably have better results if you slowly work up to washing every four days. Try washing every other day for a couple of weeks, then every 3 days, etc.

Hey I hear Baking Soda and Apple Cider Vinegar work really well too. I haven't tried it on my off days yet, but will soon.

Don't whiten them. Maybe the UV stuff works, I dunno. I don't care. I am really not nearly as vain as you. I don't mean that meanly, just how it is.
I love you too buddy.

And what just a damn second. Weren't you going on how physical attractiveness is a close second when interviewing for jobs and dating? And isn't the first thing people notice (or turn on/off) your teeth?

I feel good about myself having white teeth, it's a confidence thing.

I guess whitening your teeth is easier than growing six inches.

Why grow six inches when I can get 2 more with my Nike's? Grin

It must feel horrible whenever you get an acne outbreak...I bet every zit is noticeable from a mile away. Fortunately for us folks living in a somewhat warmer climate, the tanning we receive from the sun works well to hide it.

Well in comparison to the Third Rhine, not much to complain.

Hmm I might actually say that will work on you william, if you got the facial hair to go with it.

Why not just do a longer hair version of what Brad Pitt has?
