In solidarity with Iraqi and Syrian Nazarenes

At the risk of increasing discussion about a topic I really don't like debating, I have decided to type out various documents at the request of certain non-Indians who would like to see some of the documents often referred to.  The first, here below, is the English text of a letter which sparked controversy and is often referred to in discussions about the Indian situation.  Photos of the Syriac text may be found in Daniel David's (or is it David Daniel's...I get the names mixed up) book The Orthodox Church of India.  The English translation from Syriac is attributed to the Rev. Dr. B. Varghese, and appears in C.V. Cheriyan, Orthodox Christianity in India: A History of the Malankara Orthodox Church AD 52-2002 (Kottayam, Kerala, India: Academic Publishers, July 2003).  I'm trying to reproduce the letter as it appears in the book, typos and all.

I hope my attempt at "formatting" comes out right.

Appendix 17: The Letter of the Patriarch, Mar Ignatius Yakoub III about St. Thomas, the Apostle

Syrian Patriarchate                                                                              Patriarchate of Antioch
Of Antioch and All the East                                                                   and All the East
Damascus, Syria

                                                         [Emblem]

No. 203/70

To His Excellency our brother Baselius Augen I, Catholicos of the East.  My Respectful (Greetings).

After the respectful and brotherly kisses and the enquiry about your well-being, we say:

1.  In your letter that we have received a few days ago, I was very much surprised to read the words: "The Throne of Saint Thomas, the Apostle.

Firstly, since the establishment of the Catholicate in the fourth century, none of the Catholicoi or the Maphrians ever used this title.

Secondly, Saint Thomas the Apostle had never founded any throne to be called "Throne of Saint Thomas the Apostle', for he was not a priest as it is evident from the Gospel of Saint John 20:21-24.  As he was not a priest, how could he found a throne?  Therefore none of the early writers mention that he had founded the Catholicate throne.  As Your Excellency have acknowledged in the confession of faith that you had made in 1932, the Synod of Nicea had confirmed the Catholicate of the East.

Thirdly, even the Nestorians who had usurped the Catholicate of the East in the fifth century do not relate it to Saint Thomas the Apostle, or to the 'Throne of Saint Thomas'.  But they had related it to Mar Mari, disciple of the Evangelist Addai and they spoke of the 'Throne of Mar Mari'.

Bar Hebraeus writes: "Until the time of this Timothy (Nestorian Catholicos of the 9th century), bishops of the country of Persia (that is Rewardashir) used to be dressed in white as the secular priests and to eat meat and to take wives, and not to be submitted to the Catholicos of Selcucia.  They used to say : 'We are the disciples of the Apostle Thomas; we have nothing to do with the throne of Mari".

Fourthly, in the beginning of the second part of the Ecclesiastical History, Bar Hebraeus speaks of Saint Thomas the Apostle; not as the one who had founded the Catholicate of the East, but only as the first one who evangelized the region of the East. Similarly, the names that follow him do not belong to his ordination, but from the "fabric" of the Nestorians, as all the historians of our day witness.

Fifthly, we have ordained you not for the Throne of Saint Thomas the Apostle, but for the Catholicate of the East.  Therefore you have no authority to change this title, lest you will fall into heresy.

2.  It has been informed that at the time of the ordination of priests and deacons, our beloved Metropolitans do not instruct them in the promise of the ordination to be obedient also to the Patriarchate of Antioch, the general head of the Church, as it is written in the true amalogia that was used in the days of Bar Hebraeus.

Therefore our goodwill persuades us to ask your brotherhood to warn the Eminent Metropolitans about this great error that they were following during the division in the Church.  In order to see this truth, read the amalogia written by Mar Ivanios, who was in Malabar with the Catholicos Eldo, which will be found in the Library of the Marthomites in Thiruvalla.

Therefore the Catholicos of the East is not outside the jurisdiction of the Apostolic See of Antioch, but rather he is its Tahlupa in the regions of the East, as the Patriarch Mar Athanasius Gamolo has demonstrated when he ordained Mar Marutha of Tagrit.  He says in his letter to the monks of Mar Mathai: "There shall be a head for the bishops of Assyria, Arabia and the various regions of Persia for the ordering of the Church.  (Therefore) we ordain Mar Marutha of Tagrit, Metropolitan from the Arabs, as the head and the general ruler of all the bishops who have been named and of their regions and eparchies, in order to represent our person and office, according to our tupartito, that is "instruction: (Read the Chronicle of Michael the Great, page 413, which will be found in the house of the late Mr. K.K. Lukose).

That is why you have said in the first 'canon' of your (constitution): 'The Church of Malabar is a part of the Syrian Orthodox Church, submitted to the authority of the See of Antioch'.  By all means you remember what you have written in your confession of faith in 1932.  Regarding this subject you have written: 'I think that those who have created and follow the Catholicos, do not seek to be separated from the communion of the Patriarch.  But they have simply created a Catholicos.  By all means this is under the Patriarch'.

Again you have said : "The Antiochian See is truly ancient and glorious than all others, and it is the head of this people.  Even if the Church of Malabar receives a Catholicos, it will never be separated from the See, but it will accept for ever the Patriarch as the supreme head of this people.

3.  Sometimes we have read in the newspapers and the publications about the name of the church.  But they speak simply of 'the Orthodox Church', without (the word 'Syrian', which is the true name of the Church.

4.  Your brotherhood knows very well the decision that you have made in the Synod (met) before your consecration as Catholicos, regarding the churches in Kuwait and in other places.  We are sorry to say that the priests are appointed to these (churches) and the Metropolitans visit them without our knowledge.  This is against the decision.

Therefore we inform your beloved brotherhood that these issues disturb the functioning of the Church as before.  With your knowledge these should be corrected.  Henceforth we cannot tolerate such things.  If these perversities are not corrected, the Church will be again divided.  Therefore it will not be becaue of the Semites-as it was formerly said-but because of the Malabarians who perverted peace and by the unpleasant contention in the Church.

We greet our Apostolic bleesings to our beloved and esteemed Metropolitans and clergy and the people who are with you.  The inhabitants of the Patriarchal house kiss your hands and ask for your prayers.  We remain.

The grace of the Lord be with you.

Our Father who art in heaven, etc.

Ignatius Yakoub III                                                                              Damascus
Patriarch of Antioch and all the East                                                       27-6-70

+++

The above is the most "controversial" letter, and so I've typed it out first.  What follow are the letters which were issued twelve years earlier in 1958 at the time when the two factions reconciled and united.  First, from the Patriarch of Antioch.

Appendix 13: Kalpana of Patriarch Ignatius Yakoub III, 9 December 1958

No.  447

In the name of Him, Almighty, Perfect in Essence.  The meek Ignatious Yakoub III, Patriarch on the Apostolic throne of Antioch and all the East.

                                                         [Emblem]

Let divine peace and apostolic benediction dwell upon the eminent Metropolitans, Corepiscopas, Dayaroyo, priests, deacons and the faithful of the Syrian Church in Malankara and India under the authority of the Apostholic throne of St. Peter of Antioch and all the East.

Let these blessings be through the intercession of St. Mary, the Mother of God and all the Saints.  Amen.

After enquiring of your spiritual and physical welfare I say unto you "our Lord has said that Blessed are those who bring forth peace, for they will be called the sons of God".  How sweet, melodious and heartening is the word peace because peace builds up the broken, patches up the breaches, unites hearts and joins togehter the members of a community as organs of one body and unifies the children of the one Church.  Five thousand years after the heavens wrath on the earth, in a month like this, divine peace was bestowed on earth through the redeeming incarnation of God.

It is not a secret that the disputes and dissensions that arose in the Malankara Church prevailing for a period of 50 years have in several ways weakened and deteriorated it.  Although right from the beginning several persons who love the Church and devout of God desired peace and unity putting and end to the dissensions, they departed in sorrow without seeing the fulfilment of their desire.  We also were longing for peace in the Malankara Church and the unity of the organs of the one body of the Church.  We have expressed this desire of ours very clearly in the apostolic proclamation we issued to you soon after our accession on the Throne.  This desire of ours gained strength with all vigour day by day without in any way slackened and the Lord God has been pleased to end the dissension through us.  Glory be to him.

To bring forth peace in the Malankara Church we hereby accept with pleasure Mar Baselius Geevarghese as Catholicos.

Therefore we send our hearty greatings intensified by the fervour of peace in this month of rejoicing.  We also beseech, Let the lord shower on you His abundant blessings.  Let the lord make you a people beautified by virtuous acts towards the right and delight you with th comfort and prosperity flowing from the care pleased to his Holy will to the envy of others.  Let it be with the grace and mercy of Him, His Father and His Holy Spirit.

Our Father who art in the heaven, etc.  On the 9th of December 1958, the second year of our accession as Patriarch.

From the Aramana at Homs.

Next, the proclamation from the Catholicos.

Appendix 14: Kalpana of Catholicos Baselius Geevarghese II, 16 December 1958

No.  105/58

Glory to God united in the Trinity, the self existing, perfect in essence and without beginning or end.

From the meek Baselius Catholicos named as Geevarghese II seated on the Throne of the East of Apostle St. Thomas.

                                                         [Emblem]

Let divine grace and Apostolic Benediction be always in abundance with all the Melpattakkars (High Priests),. Priests, Deacons and all the faithful under our jurisdiction.

We have always been in grief on account of the failure of the efforts made by late Mar Geevarghese Dionysius and us to bring forth peace in our Church and end quarrels and discord which were existing in our Church for long.  We are now very much delighted and do glorify God in that there is an end to the discord showing the willingness to unite.

We, for the sake of peace in the Church, are pleased to accept Moran Mar Ignatius Yakoub III as Patriarch of Antioch subject to the Constitution passed by the Malankara Suriyani Christian Association and now in force.

We have also pleasure to accept the Metropolitans under him (Patriarch) in Malankara subject to the provisions of the said Constitution.

Let the abundant grace and blessings of God Almighty be with you always.

Let it be through th prayers of St. Mary, the Mother of God, Mar Thoma Sleeha, the Patron Saint of India, and all the saints.  Amen.

Our Father who art in the heaven, etc.

                                                                                                        From the Catholicate Aramana,
16 December 1958                                                                                                         Kottayam.

This post supplies supplementary information.

John 20: 19-24 (RSV):

[19]On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."
[20] When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
[21] Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you."
[22] And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
[23] If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."
[24] Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came.

One will note the presence of "Our Father who art in heaven, etc." at the end of these letters.  When bishops write official letters to be read, at the conclusion of the reading this prayer is recited by the reader and hearers.

Also, "Aramana" is simply the term for a bishop's residence.

Another relevant document to be considered in this context is the Pledge of Alegiance made by Late Lamented Mor Augen I, when he was enthroned as Catholicose.

Pledge by Mor Augen during his Catholicos consecration:

“ I the feeble and meak Augen Mor Themotios chosen for ecclesiastical office of the Catholicos confess my belief before the Synod, and before the head of the Synod His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Yacoub III Patriarch of Antioch and all the East that, the Patriarch is my head, that I accept from St.Peter the head of Holy Apostles upto your Holiness all the canonical Patriarchs who reigned on your Throne and all those who come after your Holiness. Once again I repeat my canonical connections with the Holy Throne of Antioch. I swear that I shall not depart from this solemn oath.”

Dear Mor Aphrem,
I am told that the expression Throne (Simhasanam) was never used by Geevarghese II Bava in his 1958 Kalpana. Can you please send me an image of the very original in Syriac or in Malayalam. I just want to personally ensure that this is not an error that has crept in accidently or not during transalation.

In Christ,

Dear Mathew,

Unfortunately, I do not at the present time have access to the original in either Syriac or Malayalam.  I originally intended only to post the 1970 letter, but decided to add the other two, and in the book I consulted, they are in appendices only in translation.  I will try to locate this document in the original, however; I too would be interested in confirming this.

A brief history of Malankara Church is reproduced from the  'Mulunthuruthy Padiyola', the resolution unanimously accepted by the Mulunthuruthy Synod that was held in AD 1876.   Chathuruthy Geevarghese Ramban (Parumala Thirumeni) http://www.parumalathirumeni.com , was one of the chief organizers of this historical Mulunthuruthy Synod and had drafted many of the documents including this, which was approved by the Holy Synod.  The entire documents presented in this Synod was later translated into Syriac by Parumala Thirumeni.  So an unbiased history of Malankara Church produced by the Patron Saint of Malankara can be considered the most reliable, unbiased history of the Malankara Orthodox Church.

Dear Kefa,

Thank you for your post.  In order to create the least amount of threads possible on this subject, so that our moderator Salpy doesn't go crazy, ( Smiley ) I've taken the liberty of merging your topic with the existing documents topic, since it seemed like a contribution to the same conversation.  Thanks!

Greetings in His most Holy Name.

May the love and joy of the Christmas Season carry us all into the New Year.

Phil has done a good deed and I earnestly want to help him in his collection of legitimate historical documents.

The "Shalmootho" (oath) of St. Gregorius Geewargis of Parumala
Submitted to H.H. Moran Mor Ignatius Peter III of Antioch & All the East
At his consecration as Metropolitan on December 16, 1876â€Â

In the name of the Father, Son and the Living Holy Spirit, the One True Living God, I, the weak and sinful Chathuruthil Geewargis Dayaroyo of Kochi Kanayannur Kovilakam precincts of Kanayannoor at Mulanthuruthy-muriyil,1 ministering at the Church of Mulanthuruthy, residing at Parur East Church, in trust, fully according to my own will, gladness and contentment, write this declaration binding on myself.

Before the Almighty Living God, before His holy angels, and before this altar—the Holy of Holies of God's Mysteries, and before the holiness of the primal head of Syrians in the four quarters of East India and Malayalam reigning on the Apostolic Throne of Antioch, Patros the Third, our blessed father and God's High Priest Patriarch Moran Mor Ignatius, I pledge thus:
May God our Creator give Your Holiness long life and protect your virtuousness.

Before the reverend priests, before all races and before the Honorable British Travancore Cochin Government, I pledge as stated below:
My weak self proclaims the mystery of our faith. Again, before God I confess faithfully that I accept and honor the Holy Fathers who proclaimed to us and taught us the perfect faith that is firmly founded on the faith of all the Prophets, of the pure Apostles and of the three Holy Synods.

Before all, I accept the twelve Apostles, the four Evangelists Matay, Markos, Lukos, and Yohannan and the blessed and great mason Apostle Paulos who provided a foundation for the Holy Universal Church.

I accept the fiery Mor Ignatios, Diwanasios, Athanasios, Yulius, Kurilos, Baselios, Gregorios, Dioscoros, Severios, Timotheos, Philexinos, Antimos, the great one among the elect Mor Barsawmo and all the malpans (teachers) like them who have arisen and are to arise in the God's Holy Syrian Church. It is just that I abide in obedience at all times, as I am indebted, to the high priesthood of the Honorable Patros the Third, Patriarch Moran Mor Ignatios, who is firmly seated in Apostolic faith on the Apostolic Throne of Antioch, as the primordial Patriarch of the Syrians of Antioch and all the East including India and Malayalam. At all times I will abide in obedience to you accepting your commandments. I will never ever deviate, less or more, left or right, from your words, canonical decisions, firm commandments and ways. I fully agree that this pledge of mine is true to the pledges of our father Abraham, Is-haaq, and Yaqob.

As is said "In vain you take and in vain you give," except for ordaining those are qualified as required by the canon, I will, never, at no time, ordain any one taking any reward, appoint an unmarried priest to administer a church, ordain a deacon who has married a widow, and accept, agree to accept, or permit or encourage anyone to accept a priest who after ordination marries a widow or any one who marries after ordination, ordain anyone who has not come forward justly without deceit and guile, ordain anyone without inquiry and testing, accept in any way, permit or agree to accept anyone who has been accursed or excommunicated by the Holy Fathers of Antioch, commune or dialogue in any way with any of them, ordain anyone outside the jurisdiction that I am appointed over, accept anyone coming from other jurisdictions in any manner without inquiry and confirmation that such persons are just, orderly, and mature2 into churches in my jurisdiction, offer or permit anyone to offer any spiritual and religious services, respond to any difficulties, persecution or disappointments from people of other faiths with anything other than the suffering for our faith, disobey any commandment from the Holy Patriarch Moran Mor Ignatios of Antioch to go or arrive at any place at any time even if weakened by illness or by age or anything else, or do anything that my ordination I have accepted or will accept permits, such as a chastised metropolitan consecrating another metropolitan, or other deeds, or behave contrary to the declarations, rules and decisions of the canon especially highlighted in this declaration. If indeed I commit these I wholly believe that I will be accursed, execrated and excommunicated from that moment like anyone who does such deeds, or accepts them. When Korah, Dathan and Abirom offered incense, God's wrath fell upon them.3 I believe that the earth split opened its mouth and swallowed them and fire consumed their priests.4 May God prohibit me from such deeds!

My weak selves will never, at any day, violate the decisions, rules, and canon laws particularly noted in this declaration as well as those omitted from this declaration for brevity but stated here as the many other canon laws, decisions, rules, practices, and customs of the Jacobite Syrians, any commandments of Your Holiness or those of the Patriarchs who will be in this position over the times publicly or in private, and conduct or encourage, do or persuade to do, speak or incite speech, help or promote, agree or persuade any conduct, deeds or speech, in opposition to or disapproval to such commandments, and never detract from or depart from these commandments or oppose or be silent and never join other ways opposed to the faith of the Jacobite Syrians or do anything or accept anything opposed to the customs of our Syrian Church, or ever believe in any doctrine contrary to those of the three Holy Synods. If indeed I do, as were Satan and Cain cursed by God, I will be accursed and execrated from the mouths of God, the head of the Apostles, Apostle Patros, and his eleven brothers, the Apostles of our Lord Meshiha, the fiery Mor Ignatios, the holy fathers who participated in the three Holy Synods, all the malpans (teachers) who were given breath by the Holy Spirit, the authority equivalent to Apostle Patros and the steward of the truth of our Lord Meshiha, Patros the Third the exalted Moran Mor Ignatios Patriarch and all the high priests who will succeed him on the Apostolic throne of Antioch and in addition will be separated from God's Holy Church and the communion of the Holy Mysteries and removed and distanced from the blessings and positions I have received and stripped of the white robes of high priesthood. May God's wrath be upon me!

Again, for the judgment according to the righteous judgements of the Holy Spirit, and as the Evangelion commands "all that you bind on earth shall be bound also in heaven",5 and according to the authority bestowed on Your Holiness by God, I will not only become eligible to be expelled from your presence, judged and removed from my position; if I modify or alter this document that I have written myself of my own volition or any of the pledges stated above, it is just that Your Holiness proclaim that I am fraudulent, so that no one trusts my word. If ever such an occasion arises, Your Holiness or any of your successors in that position can demand that I take back this document after paying 2850 British rupees.

Now, I pray for the blessings of God and our Lord Yeshu Meshiha to fulfill the pledge that I have made with rectitude, and by His grace help and strengthen me and bless me to receive Him graciously when He comes to judge the living and the dead according to their deeds, good or evil. I petition to be counted among the righteous and not among the fraudulent.

I confess before God and before His holy altar that the holy angels, the living Cross, the venerated Evangelion, those ordained to priesthood and the honorable people are witnesses to my pledge.

Amen, barekhmor al shubqono. AD 1876 Vrischikam 26.

Note: â€Â  This translation is from the Malayalam version scribed by Mor Gregorius himself and executed as a legal document. This document was produced as evidence in the Seminary litigation. The translation attempts to be as faithful as possible to the original. Tediously long sentences are translated as such to the extent possible. Words are translated to their semantic equivalents in English appropriate to the context.

I do not wish to get involved in a race to copy and paste texts, especially since I will not be copying and pasting, but typing them out on my own, with necessary formatting.  However, I have to wait for the shower, so I will start typing a relevant account from Cheriyan's book, with two other documents.  I am attempting if at all possible to reproduce the text as it appears, including typos.

Mutual Acceptance, 1958

The judgment of September 1958 (Phil: I really don't want to type this all out, but at the risk of controversy, I will say that the judgement was basically an appeal by the Patriarchal faction of a case [won by the Catholicos faction] based on "fresh evidence") while endorsing the position of the Catholicos party, dealt a heavy blow on the pretensions of the Patriarch party and the effort of the party to foist the temporal authority of the Patriarch of Antioch on the Malankara Church.  The Metropolitans of the Patriarch party found that although they were consecrated by the Patriarch himself, they could not have any administrative power over any of the dioceses in the Malankara Church having not been elected by the Malankara Suriyani Christian Association.  The Patriarch party also found itself under the legal requirement to pay the entire court expenses of the Catholicos party amounting to a few lakhs of rupees.  The petition of the Patriarch party praying to review the judgment was also rejected.  The emerging situation necessitated the revival of peace parleys.

The Metropolitans on the Patriarch party realising the implications of the judgment of September 1958 in regard to their own administrative functions appraised the Patriarch Mar Yakoub III of the situation prevailing on the Malankara Church, and the Patriarch accordingly in his letter No. 447 dated 9 December 1958 sent from Homs, Syria to Mar Julius extended recognition to the Catholicos Moran Mar Baselius Geevarghese II.

The Catholicos party also was in favour of the realisation of a lasting peace in the Malankara Church.  The receipt of the Patriarch's letter extending recognition to the Catholicos was followed by prolonged discussions on the modalities of mutual acceptance and exchange of documents.  The terms of reconciliation and procedure for the exchange of letters were finalised at the final round of talks held on 16 December 1958.  Accordingly, the Catholicos and all the Metropolitans of the Catholicos party except Pathrose Mar Ostathios and all the Metropolitans on the Patriarch side except Mar Severios, including Mar Julius, assembled in the historic chapel of the Old Seminary in the presence of a large gathering of priests and laymen.  The Catholicos and Mar Julius exchanged the letters of mutual acceptance at 11.00 p. m.on 16 December 1958 ending the half-a-century old dispute in the Malankara Church.

The letter of acceptance from the Patriarch Moran Mar Ignatius Yakoub III dated 9 December 1958 said:

We had expressed this wish to you...in order to establish peace in Malankara. (See Appendix 13 for the full text of the Bull.)

(Phil: the entire text of this Bull is above, I am only including the initial and final words of the quote in order to facilitate finding the exact passage in question; the same convention will be followed where applicable.)

His Holiness the Catholicos Moran Mar Baselius Geevarghese II, in the letter of acceptance handed over to Mar Julius, said;

We are pleased to accept...subject to the provisions of the Constitution. (See Appendix 14 for the full text of the Bull.)

The Constitution limits the powers of the Patriarch in respect of his relations with the Malankara Church to three things:

(a) When a new Catholicos is to be enthroned in the Malankara Church, if there is a Patriarch in Antioch elected with the participation of the Malankara Church, he should be invited, and if he comes, he will preside over the Synod of the Malankara Church which enthrones the Catholicos;

(b) If there is a major investigation against the Catholicos and the Episcopal Synod has to take action on it, the Patriarch of Antioch can be invited to preside over the Synod, and if he comes, he will preside; if not the Senior Metropolitan will preside; and

(c) The Malankara Church will recognise only a Patriarch enthroned with the cooperation of the Catholicos of East.

Following the ceremony of mutual acceptance, the Metropolitans of  the erstwhile Patriarch party sent letters to the Catholicos declaring their loyalty and obedience to the Catholicos assuring the Catholicos that the future programme of the Church will be carried out splendidly under the direction of the Catholicos.  (See Appendix 15 for the full text of the letter by Mar Philexinos as model of these letters.)

(Phil: I will reproduce these below, before or after my shower.)

Malankara Association Meeting, 1958

Following the ceremony of mutual acceptance, the Catholicos who was also the Malankara Metropolitan convened a meeting of the Malankara Suriyani Christian Association at St. Mary's Church at Puthencavu on 26 December 1958.  The Association met as scheduled and elected Manalil Yakoub Kathanar as the Priest-Trustee and Ooppoottil Kurian Abraham as Lay-Trustee.  This meeting of the Association held soon after the rapprochement between the Catholicos party and the Patriarch party was a fully representative gathering.  All the parishes under the former Patriarch party had sent their representatives to the meeting.  The Metropolitan Paulose Mar Philexinos announced his unqualified obedience to the Catholicos in the speech delivered by him at the meeting of the Malankara Association held at Puthencavu on 11 December 1958.  (Phil: this appears to be a glaring typo, as the Association met on the 26th, reconciliation only being finalised on the 16th.  Furthermore, the full text of the speech, as it appears in the appendix, is dated 26 December 1958.)  Metropolitan Mar Philexinos, on behalf of the all the Metropolitans of the former Patriarch party, declared support and loyalty to the Catholicate in unambiguous terms.  The Metropolitan said:

We shall remain under the Catholicate as long as the moon and stars shall exist...May this bond of friendship and mutual understanding between the Catholicate and the Patriarchate of Antioch grow in strength. (See Appendix 16 for the full text of the speech.)

(Phil: I am ending the quote here because the text begins to proceed into the souring of relations, and because my hands hurt.  I will reproduce below the letter and the speech of Mar Philexinos.)

Appendix 16: Speech Delivered by Paulose Mar Philexinos, 26 December 1958

His Holiness the Catholicos, Brother Metropolitans, parish representatives and other members.

I consider it a great privilege to say a few words on this occasion.  We had offered intense prayers and worked hard for this peace.  By God's will we could come together and think over Church's future.

We shall remain under the banner of the Catholicate till the moon and stars last.  This Catholicate will exist for all time to come.  May the God Almighty be pleased that we all will stand united under the leadership of this Catholicos who graces the throne.

I do not mean political or temporal matters.  We have now the privilege of witnessing for our Lord unitedly under the stewardship of one Head.  May this unity serve as a signal to all other Churches of India to fall in line under this common Father.

We, Metropolitans, will hand in hand serve under the Holy throne of Catholicate.  May this bond of friendship and mutual understanding between the Catholicate and the Patriarchate of Antioch grow in strength.  May it please God that the Churches in India which stand separated come under th Catholicate and witness for our Lord.  May our unity lead the way.

Because the last two posts by kefa and benyono did not include documents, but simply commentary with quotes and/or other information, I will be moving them to another thread.  Let's try to keep this thread only for documents (properly cited if at all possible), and for commentary on the documents (and by this, I mean comments along the lines of those of Mathew G M).

ha ha this Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church fanatic could go hide posts in any thread he wants.  That is the usual style of his group for the 100 years of its existence.  Only a fool tries to hide a lit lamp with darkness.  The truth could never be hid.

Don't be an idiot.  I didn't hide anything, I simply moved it where it was more appropriate (you could've figured that out if you had simply read).  You can find it, completely unchanged, here:

My apologies for not posting the link earlier.

You would make a better witness for your church (and I would be more inclined to take you seriously) if you didn't deliberately seek to annoy.

Secondly, Saint Thomas the Apostle had never founded any throne to be called "Throne of Saint Thomas the Apostle', for he was not a priest as it is evident from the Gospel of Saint John 20:21-24.ÂÂ  As he was not a priest, how could he found a throne?ÂÂ  Therefore none of the early writers mention that he had founded the Catholicate throne.ÂÂ  As Your Excellency have acknowledged in the confession of faith that you had made in 1932, the Synod of Nicea had confirmed the Catholicate of the East.ÂÂ

this letter is something malankara orthodox syrian church falsely use to promote its heresy.
