A New OCNet Is Approaching
« on: August 03, 2019, 01:51:17 PM »
The funds have been appropriated, the orders placed, and in the near future our New Software Platform will be unveiled.  All users and threads will be migrated to the upgraded platform, so all forum users should join us in praying for thanksgiving and swift implementation as we move forward. I will not go into detail on the new platform and its vast improvements in functionality, as this is meant to be a joyous surprise.  I want you to think of the new forum as Disneyland and of Anastasios as Walt Disney (and perhaps think of me as Bob Gurr or John Hench).  Like Heaven, it should  be entered as little children enter Disneyland, and thus the only definite assurance I will provide, despite having open in another tab a complete list of specifications, is that it will look much much better, not the least because Story will be enhancing its appearance.

The URL will be slightly different, but the domain name will be the same.  We might run the new forum on the root of OCNet or in a subdomain, I suppose depending on what side of our respective beds Anastasios and I and Fr. George wake up on.  In the interim, since Disneyland has been ruined, I suggest you watch the classic 1955 film Around the World in 80 Days with David Niven as Phileas Fogg.  So also perhaps pray that OCNet never has its own Michael Eisner or Bob Iger to spoil it.

Please seriously pray for Anastasios, Story and myself as we have some work to do.  Not an unmanageable amount, but prayers for our general health and well being would be appreciated.

The short and unemotional answer is yes. Anastasios and I both keep full backups offline and we also have hot backups online.  And we now also have a DR server for the NSP, so when we do transition to the new software, we will be very hard to kill.

The longer answer is in Other Topics, here: http://www.orthodoxchristianity.net/forum/index.php/topic,76698.msg1580324.html#msg1580324

Prayers for your journey to the moon and back.  :-X

Thank you Luke.  Rest assured however, It’s not that hard!  :o

Fortunately for all parties, Anastasios, Story and myself will not be sealed into a capsule with a limited O2 supply and launched into orbit on a massive rocket.  Which is good, because while I am sure Story will be an excellent driver, we would not want to miss Trans-Lunar Injection and wind up en route to nowhere.

Also, our computers have registered ECC RAM, whereas the Apollo guidance computer, which was fabulous for its time by the way, used hand-woven core ROM and a microscopic amount of RAM, maybe a kilobyte, maybe sixty four, minus parity bits.  Ans as the famous 1202 error demonstrated on Apollo 11, the rudimentary OS, the Watchdog, couldn’t deal with I/O overruns, and the system did not have enough processing power to keep up with the I/O.  Modern computers on the other hand are usually I/O bound; because everything is on the cloud, our insane SOCs with gigabytes of memory and gigaflops of CPU just sit there either waiting for I/O to happen or waiting on I/O to be flushed to the net, but the processing on modern PCs and the internal I/O is snappy.  Particularly since Intel got rid of the antiquated Front Side Bus and the Northgate/Southgate architecture of the 80s in favour of a crossbar switch system, which real computers have had like, 1960.  It’s like the difference between a party line telephone of the 1920s and your mobile data service.

Now, we would approach not Apollo, but maybe Soyuz difficulty, if we were doing this with VisualBASIC.Net on Windows Server.   Or Delphi.  I quake and tremble at the mention of Delphi, and a meeting with Delphi programmers I once attended went like this:

“Well, I think this program is a good example of model-view-controller.”

“Are you kidding?  It’s Model-view-view-model!”

“But that doesn’t correspond with the client/server architecture.”

“Well all I know is the way you are handing remote procedure calls is definitely model view view model and not model view controller.”

Me:  ::) then  >:( then  :-X concluded with  :'( :'( :'(

Unlikely, because clocks don't go back and forward on the same date worldwide.

Actually I am pretty sure the localization on our new software is correctly implemented, unless you live a time zone of great obscurity.

There are a few legendary and much derided timezones where the offset is not a complete hour.  And localities like Arizona and Nevada which use timezones other than one would expect (the former has no DST and the latter is synchronized with California, which makes sense given the meagre populations of most of its MT neighbors).  But these are trivial compared to those dark dimensions where the time is off by, say, 45 minutes (Kabul, if memory serves, and also some southerly land, Bolivia, perhaps).

As you said, these provinces are of great notoriety. I assume if I happen to find mysel in Kabul, the time will be correct?

So will snafus of the past (caused by database crashes or hacks or whatever it might have been) be corrected, or are we stuck with those as, uh, quirks of the forum history? I mean things like polls from one thread being attached to the rest of completely different threads, or some quotes showing old usernames even after the user has changed their name?

So will snafus of the past (caused by database crashes or hacks or whatever it might have been) be corrected, or are we stuck with those as, uh, quirks of the forum history? I mean things like polls from one thread being attached to the rest of completely different threads, or some quotes showing old usernames even after the user has changed their name?

Quote headers are static, so the name shown will remain as it was when the quote was made, for aye.

That said, it is theoretically possible to edit the SQL dump of the database to correct for that, and also the new forum features dynamic quote headers which work on the basis of user ID rather than display name.  But hypothetically, we could fix this, and we would probably want to do it before the actual migration.  It would be a bit of work, but it could be done.

How would you all feel about that?

I mean, I'd be for the change, but I have a very selfish reason (my real world name is attached to some of those posts, and some of those posts could cause someone to cringe to death).

The software upgrade has not happened yet.  Talia and I are still working on the graphics.

Just curious, do you know around how long it will be before the upgrade happens?
This is something cute and innocent.

Will an update fix the thing where you have to manually change the "Time Offset"? A small issue, just curious.

Or if you live in the Chatham Islands off the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand.  They are 45 minutes ahead of NZ time.
