Naturalistic Icons of the Macedonian Renaissance
« on: June 07, 2019, 05:48:24 AM »
The New Liturgical Movement blog, which often contains very interesting articles on the Byzantine Rite, sometimes covering the Orthodox church directly (although it is an RC blog, so most of their articles on the Eastern Rites either look at things from an Eastern Catholic or a neutral, liturgical-rite specific context) ran an article which really fascinated me, containing photographs of icons painted in the “Macedonian Renaissance” style that was apparently popular around the year 1,000; these icons interest me for two reasons, firstly, their naturalism, which it would seem predates the naturalistic art of the Roman Renaissance by 500 years, and secondly, it retains a stylistic quality typical of iconography.

These images come from a manuscript of Greek provenance in the Biblotheque National of France known as the “Paris Psalter.”

I am curious if anyone knows of any other examples of icons in this style, or if there are any Orthodox churches decorated in this style.

I have no knowledge of it. I did, however, want to stop and shame you for providing no links.

Oh snap.  I was distracted by a phone call and posted the message, thinking I had included links.  Whoops...    :-[
