So I've done a very small amount of research, but can't figure out precisely when Advent ceased to be a fasting period in the Western Church.  Certainly the 1662 English Book of Common Prayer doesn't mention it, so it must be before that.  Any ideas of when and why?

I should add that I've asked some Roman Catholic 'net acquaintances this question in the past and nobody knew.  The only Western reference I can think of coming across was Pope Leo the Great.  After that I haven't happened across any such references.
