How do you pray for someone who actively hated prayer?
« on: November 20, 2018, 12:40:15 AM »
I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but I'll give it a shot.

Recently, I found out that someone I knew a long time ago passed away. I started to pray for him ... "O Lord, have mercy on the soul of Your servant, X" ... then stopped, because X was a militant atheist who actively fought against religion, Christianity in particular, so "Your servant" seemed, well, inaccurate.

Could someone suggest a better way to word my prayer? Or, if this is me once again trying to reinvent the wheel, and there's already a great prayer out there for such persons, could you let me know?

(And yeah, of course I know God knows what I'm trying to say, but it's always nice to try and say it more clearly, right?  ;) )

Thanks!

Lord, have mercy on x.
Happy shall he be, that shall take and dash thy little ones against the rock. Alleluia.

Don't have any answers but also found myself in the same boat tonight. We prayed "Lord have mercy on the soul of X."

Both response above I use, also " on the sinner x" (everybody is a sinner, so it's not judging there)
Pray for persecuted Christians, especially in Serbian Kosovo and Raška, Egypt and Syria

No need to reinvent. From his current perspective, I promise you he appreciates the prayer as offered. It's important to remember that while for you he is a memory, he is in fact an eternal person who benefits from your prayers regardless.

Blessed Nazarius practiced the ascetic life. His clothes were tattered. He wore his shoes without removing them for six years.

I go ahead and say "servant," myself. He may have been a wayward or rebellious servant, as we all are in our own ways, but that doesn't change his relationship to God.
Woe is me, that I have read the commandments,

and have been instructed in Your glories,
and yet I have become occupied in shameful things!

Thanks! Yeah, my husband said that too. Guess I should listen to him more often, eh?  ;)

I do this as well for the same reasons.

Thank you, this is a good point.
