Fasting food
« on: June 24, 2018, 04:10:27 AM »
Discussions about the Apostles Fast got me wondering, why is it considered more important (pious?) to give up eating meat/dairy/oil during a fasting period than to give up, say, looking at the internet, reading the newspaper, working out at the gym, washing one's hair?

On washing hair, Matthew 6: 15-18 is pretty clear:

“Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

The whole of chapter 6 has useful things to say on fasting, prayer, and one's conduct during it.

Some of these things weren't present some time ago. And food is (and will be) one of the most basic things for human being. And as every fast has a goal to change us and our life, so it has to touch the basis. And that's why fasting is connected with giving alms (to love one another, to not try to find some other benefits from fasting from food).

However, such things like no dancs, no music, giving worse (older) toys fo children druing fast have been always present. So, nowaydas we add to our fast e.g limitation of the Internet. The main point is to keep the spirit of fasting in every area of our life, starting from the basis.

That's how I see this.

I think Dominika is exactly right about the universality of food.

All of the other things mentioned are probably worth fasting from, at least in some degrees, but it seems like they're much more contingent on a person's situation. Not everyone has access to tons of entertainment, let alone the dirt-cheap entertainment of the West. Not everyone spends time at the gym, or can afford a newspaper or (in this modern era) even bothers reading one!

But everyone eats. The rest of the things (along with your own dietary fast) should be discussed with a spiritual father to figure out the best things to focus your fasts on.

I think that what he's trying to say is how the West (Rome) transformed fasting from abstinence from meat to "give up something and fast - some way - on these two days" came from the Protestants
I'm done.

I know for a fact that the council of Jerusalem dealt with abstaining from television, internet, and foul magazine articles.

When I am being particularly judgmental, I will have some beef.

I hear that the Apostles would abstain from driving their Honda on fast days.

Fasting has medicinal purposes.  The removal of meat products from ones diet makes us more humble and loving. Must be the hormones that make us more carnal.
