Yeah... the mob usually isn't very good at formulating rational responses to things.

I don't want to outlaw religion.  I just keep my kids as far away from churches as possible given their disproportionately high rates of child abuse when compared to other social institutions.

RCC needs to allow married priests. With all the scandals, shortage of clergy, aging clergy etc. their whole apparatus is breaking down. Yeah the old guy really did something bad, but what is the rest of his life service? No excuses for this but properly discipline him, see what he can doin recompense, & retire him so he can repent as needed.

I’m not sure how ending clerical celibacy will address situations like these.  Plenty of dads slap their kids.  Plenty of moms, too.

It's hard for some to imagine such measures in any context, I think.  Especially a crying baby/toddler, whatever the upset was.  It's sort of hard to tell what all was going on there or how old s/he is.
But yes, I don't see how celibacy has to do with any of that, nor why retirement is a prerequisite for repentance.   ???
Is any of the above Orthodox?  I have no clue, so there's that.

This is awful, but the priest seems to be kinda demented. Makes no sense.

Dad should've decked the priest.
I bet you got pretty turned on with the video though...

It’s not really about celibacy; it about a shortage of priests. They probably have aging priests doing things they would have been routinely retired from a generation ago. I do not know if having married priests will solve their issues but some of the workload would probably be handled better with more priests.

It's not an excuse, but the priest is 89 years old.

https://people.com/human-interest/french-priest-slapped-baby-baptism-suspended/

His behavior seemed a little weird throughout the video, even before the slap, and I'm assuming he has at least mild dementia.  Really, he should be retired and living on a pension.  There's something very wrong when an 89-year-old still has to be working.

He's been suspended from doing baptisms.

How many of you attend churches with local policies that protect against child abuse in the church? (Things like no one adult being left alone with a child, etc.)

Your fedora Atheist bias may say the contrary, but the US Department of Education has stated "the physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests".

In before the data pedantry
Quote from: Fr. Thomas Hopko, dystopian parable of the prodigal son
...you can imagine so-called healing services of the pigpen. The books that could be written, you know: Life in the Pigpen. How to Cope in the Pigpen. Being Happy in the Pigpen. Surviving in the Pigpen. And then there could be counselling, for people who feel unhappy in the pigpen, to try to get them to come to terms with the pigpen, and to accept the pigpen.

I hate data pedantry as well, but as much as a lot of scandal was uncovered over time, it is pure evil to spread the myth of priests as a class of sexual predators after knowing it's not quite true.

I said they need more priest. If they had enough with celibates then I would not suggest that they consider married priests. They have way more issues to deal with also.

How many of you have children attending schools with local policies that protect them against abuse (things like no one teacher being left alone with a child, etc)?

Funny... you'd think churches would be doing better than secular institutions like public schools. /shrug
Your fedora Atheist bias may say the contrary, but the US Department of Education has stated "the physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests".

Way to go, bud!  The US Department of Education said that?  Are you sure it wasn't Hofstra University researcher Charol Shakeshaft?  This is great!  Tell me more, RaphaCam, about your research into this issue *before* you read what you're talking about!  Physical sexual abuse in public schools?  Pray tell; what was the abuse which was caused by other students in comparison to the abuse caused by priest?  Are you sure you want to have this conversation?

I hate data pedantry as well, but as much as a lot of scandal was uncovered over time, it is pure evil to spread the myth of priests as a class of sexual predators after knowing it's not quite true.

Demonstrate that claim, hyperdox Herman! ;)
