Anyone following up on the World Cup?
« on: June 18, 2018, 10:49:08 PM »
I'm pretty excited about it, these early games already gave us some very interesting games, such as Mexico 1 x Germany 0 (which we'd call a "zebra" in Brazil), Russia 5 x Saudi Arabia 0, Argentina 1 x Iceland 1 and Brazil 1 x Switzerland 1.

I'm kinda hopeful about Brazil managing to get our sixth title, but we evidently still have to manage our classically greatest flaw playing football: too much emotion. Our team tends to get too undermotivated after being goaled, and too overconfident after goaling. This is what gave us Germany 7 x Brazil 1 in the last World Cup and it's what made us let Zuber hit such an easy goal in our last game against Switzerland (the Swiss team is pretty strong and technical, but that one shot could have been prevented IMO).

I'm expecting a handful of "zebras" in this World Cup... We might even have a debut champion!

The match between Portugal and Spain ending at 3 goals each was the best so far.

Peru played very well, but was jinxed and lost to Denmark.

As for Brazil, played like Tunisia, and tieing with Switzerland was the same as losing. I don't see the team going past the quarter finals with such inconsistency, after having sailed through the qualifiers.

Switzerland is great, the game was just... lukewarm, I guess.

Loved match Spain-Portugal, very dynamic. I only didn't like Ronaldo (as we call him in Polish, "Krystyna", that's "Catherine") for obvious reasons.

I'm impressed by island, hope they do similar jor as during last EURO.

My Serbian compatriots, despite being strong on paper, haven't showed anything special as a team, traditionally.

I'm afraid a beat about my second national team, as Polish footballes and the coach have been advertigin for last two months actually everything.

I hope so, it would be nice if Portugal won the Cup, however imagine Critiano Ronaldo's ego after that.

Thank goodness, the menfolk are not into football (Big is a cricket man, Small has no interest in sports in general). We just watch the roundup at the end of the day, mainly looking when Gary Lineker is on the commentator panel, because he's beyond hilarious.

Serbian media write that a group of suporters from Switzerland went to not proper Rostov, so they didn't watch the match with Brasil - they were 1200 km far from the stadium.

My country didn't make it in this year. I'm terribly ashamed.

Don't know who to pull for. Guess I'll root for England.

His ego would trigger the Fifth Empire and swallow the Earth. I think it's a real possibility TBH (Portugal winning, not the Fifth Empire).

On the bright side, you guys are the best at the Women's World Cup.

I didn't watch any game today, but there were a couple of surprises, with Poland losing to Senegal and Colombia to Japan.  No game entices me tomorrow, but I'm curious about the match between France and Peru and Argentina and Croatia the day after tomorrow.

Brazil x Costa Rica today had a pretty interesting twist. It was dull during the regular 90 minutes, then Coutinho and Neymar scored one goal each in the six minutes of overtime.

Referee! It was pure penalty for Serbia. And all these cards for Serbs... Plus that half of them Swiss team were Albanians and other not-natives... And the chef of Var system in this match was a German, he shouldn't be in such situation...
Disaster. I've got a few text messages from friends and aquitances about this match - all of them claim that referee wasn't fair.

Brazil finally played with verve, even if they could only muster it in the final minutes. Costa Rica owes their goalie for holding up the score otherwise.

I haven't watched the match between Serbia and Switzerland, but it seems that the match between Brazil and Dennis may be pretty exciting.

Too bad that Argentina played so badly as to be virtually out of the Cup so soon. Lots of surprises in this World Cup.

It was a disaster - I mean, match of Poland against Colombia.
Lewandowski almost didn't exist. Only one of my favourite Polish players, Pazdan, was in quite condition, but,a s one of my friends wrote "His colleagues didn't want to play with him".
One of the comentators in the Polish national TV said "The problem is not that we're leaving the tournament, as it has happened already in this round to a few other teams. The problem is no one will cry after us".

I'm sure there are women who can do a great job announcing a game, Aly Wagner is not one of them. Hopefully we won't be subjected to her again once we're done with the group stage the group stage.

I thought this item in the News about the World Cup was really funny: about Lenin's body being sacred.
I thought good communists were cremated so why are Lenin's remains "sacred".
Quote

Mexican parade at World Cup cancelled after fears of proximity to Lenin's grave.

Mexican soccer fans have called off a Day of the Dead-themed parade in Moscow’s Red Square after communist lawmakers objected to the event being held so close to Lenin’s tomb...
Sergei Malinkovich, the deputy head of the Communists of Russia party, said people dressed as skeletons – one of the traditional symbols of the Mexican annual holiday at which families honour their dead loved ones – should not be allowed to march on what his party has called “hallowed” ground....The body of the Soviet founder Vladimir Lenin lies embalmed in a marble tomb on the square and Soviet leaders and dignitaries are buried in the Kremlin walls.
Malinkovich’s party had appealed to the interior ministry to stop fans holding the parade, he said, arguing it could provoke violent clashes with Russian patriots.

I feel kinda bad for Portugal's defeat.

Probably because of your sentiments. Urugay was better.

Edit: what a strange goal for Spain against Russia.

Same, I was not expecting it, but we can still cheer on for Brazil though, that is a bonus of being brazilian

Also congrats for Russia winning against Spain!
As of 2018, I do not post or read here as often as I did.
