Who's the painter of that one?  ???

Mikhail Nesterov
“God,”
The words rumbled:
“There is much suffering,
But the church is alive. "

“How long, Archpriest, are we to suffer thus?” I answered: “Until our very death, Markovna!” And she replied, with a sigh: “So be it, Petrovich, let us plod on.” - Life of Avvakum by Himself

Nastasya, Nastasya, be
patient and do not cry:
Not every happiness
Comes in the clothing of fortune.

St. Avvakum, pray for us!

St. Ambrose, pray for us!

Wonder what year that's from. Looks quite old (as the tag also states), but in excellent condition

That's well done. You don't hear a lot about Orthodox burning people at the stake.

It must have smelled awful and heretic-y.
Happy shall he be, that shall take and dash thy little ones against the rock. Alleluia.

This was the original meaning of verses like Psalm 141:2, before English translators corrupted the text to make it more palatable to modern people.

All collections of neoclassic paintings and buildings, especially from the 18th and 19th centuries, should be incinerated.  Enough said.

Because cubism, dadaism, postmodernism, etc. are so much better, right, old stick?

I think alot of it was inspired by the fact that he grew up in Poland right after WWII and saw lots of suffering and misery.

All of those could be death metal album covers.

One of them was actually used for a Christian black metal cover:

Also, some of his art was used as a setting in at least one recent computer game.

It's actually a lubok, an old Russian cartoon popular up to the Revolution.

Hah, I wonder if that's based on an historical episode.
Christ my God, set my heart on fire with love in You, that in its flame I may love You with all my heart, with all my mind, and with all my soul and with all my strength, and my neighbor as myself, so that by keeping Your commandments I may glorify You the Giver of every good and perfect gift. Amen.

Also, on the topic of burning heretics, I find it disturbing that Yevgenny of Novgorod is a canonized Saint.

He saw how "successful" the Spanish inquisition was, and he decided "hey, I ought to emulate that to deal with our own heretics," and he started a campaign of burning Judaizing heretics at the stake. And now he's a Saint because of it.

I mean, I know that the Catholic Church isn't better in terms of canonizing the burners - St. Robert Bellarmine, St. Thomas More, etc.
But the fact that St. Yevgenny of Novgorod was canonized mainly because he burned heretics, is really disturbing to me.

A copper plate print from a contemporary master, Mio Asahi
“Steel isn't strong, boy, flesh is stronger! That is strength, boy! That is power! What is steel compared to the hand that wields it?  Contemplate this on the tree of woe.” - Elder Thulsa Doom of the Mountain of Power

Mencius said, “Instruction makes use of many techniques. When I do not deign to instruct someone, that too is a form of instruction.”

A badonkadonk so magnificent, even the gods of the deep obey it.
Christ my God, set my heart on fire with love in You, that in its flame I may love You with all my heart, with all my mind, and with all my soul and with all my strength, and my neighbor as myself, so that by keeping Your commandments I may glorify You the Giver of every good and perfect gift. Amen.

This illuminated manuscript, which I took forever to find. I just love it - it's the "Wheel of the Ten Ages of Man" from the Psalter of Robert de Lisle, from the 14th century (I think French in origin).

From the bottom left clock-wise:

It's a man being fed by his mother as a baby, the man as a youth - where he is holding a mirror and caring for his hair, then the man learning and being educated, the age of chivalry and love with a horse and a lovebird, then the man as a king where he is dominant in his youth, then the man putting on a monastic garment and literally waving goodbye to his old life, the man raising a kid of his own, the man dying, the funeral, and the coffin.

And obviously, God in the middle.

Maybe I should've put this in the thread "the more things change the more they stay the same," but I still think it's a wonderful peace of art that shows some of the universal and constant elements of the human experience.

The vision to young Bartholomew by Nesterov speaks tons to me.

For what? Arresting me for what? I'm not allowed to stand up for myself? I thought this was America! Huh? Isn't this America? I'm sorry, I thought this was America.
