Children's book illustrator Gennady Spirin is one of my favorites. Here's a scene from The Sea King's Daughter

And this one is from The Lord is My Shepherd:

He's kind of a modern heir to the Flemmish! Wow.
Christ my God, set my heart on fire with love in You, that in its flame I may love You with all my heart, with all my mind, and with all my soul and with all my strength, and my neighbor as myself, so that by keeping Your commandments I may glorify You the Giver of every good and perfect gift. Amen.

Nikos Engonopoulos (1907-1985)

"Simon Bolivar the Brave liberator"

Why do the hills have eyes? Does that symbolize something?
Christ my God, set my heart on fire with love in You, that in its flame I may love You with all my heart, with all my mind, and with all my soul and with all my strength, and my neighbor as myself, so that by keeping Your commandments I may glorify You the Giver of every good and perfect gift. Indeed! I’m rather smitten.

Any idea of what the eyes mean? I suspect it has something to do with the fact he was a Freemason, but otherwise, I can't recall any parallel in his biography.

Mass of St. Gregory, author unknown, but probably an Aztec. Rather a mosaic than a painting, but anyway.

I believe Gauguin was influenced by Redon. Or was it the other way around? I'm not sure.

Nobody does nature painting quite like the Chinese (and influenced cultures). Even when it's not as sweeping and impressive as a Neoclassical offering, it still captures that certain something that makes nature scenes either so relaxing or so inspiring.

Not sure who painted it, but it represents the Babylonian captivity. I love its expressive simplicity.

Caresses by Fernand Khnopff. I don't know why Oedipus and the Sphinx are so lovey-dovey or why they both have the same face (Khnopff's sister and frequent model, Marguerite), but hey. Symbolist painting's like that.

Very nice. The Hogarth painting is an illustration of the scene from Paradise Lost Book II where Satan encounters his daughter Sin and their incestuous offspring Death at the gates leading out of Hell:

...Each at the Head
Level'd his deadly aime; thir fatall hands
No second stroke intend, and such a frown
Each cast at th' other, as when two black Clouds
With Heav'ns Artillery fraught, come rattling on
Over the CASPIAN, then stand front to front
Hov'ring a space, till Winds the signal blow
To joyn thir dark Encounter in mid air:
So frownd the mighty Combatants, that Hell
 Grew darker at thir frown, so matcht they stood;
For never but once more was either like
To meet so great a foe: and now great deeds
Had been achiev'd, whereof all Hell had rung,
Had not the Snakie Sorceress that sat
Fast by Hell Gate, and kept the fatal Key,
Ris'n, and with hideous outcry rush'd between.

O Father, what intends thy hand, she cry'd,
Against thy only Son? What fury O Son,
Possesses thee to bend that mortal Dart
 Against thy Fathers head? and know'st for whom;
For him who sits above and laughs the while
At thee ordain'd his drudge, to execute
What e're his wrath, which he calls Justice, bids,
His wrath which one day will destroy ye both.

I wish artists would get more creative than portraying death as a skeleton, contrary to the Epic.

Nonetheless, they are still renditions of scenes from a beautiful (but obviously heterodox) poem.

One thing I appreciate in both of these paintings - the one I have shown and this one - is that they seem to more successfully portray Satan as something that was beautiful but has been corrupted by his pride and evil - at least to me - than most red monster or red guy with black beard depictions we often see today.

From the illustrations I've seen, John Martin seems to hew closest to the text in his depiction (or perhaps non-depiction) of Death in this scene.

Ironically, not really too big of a fan on this one.

I'm done.

Mass of St. Gregory, author unknown, but probably an Aztec. Rather a mosaic than a painting, but anyway.

It's pretty, but why are there pineapples on the tomb / altar?

Still not my personal favorite painting of the depiction of Saint Gregory's Mass / Eucharistic Miracle. I like this one better.

Pineapples were a symbol of wealth and hospitality for some. Not sure if that’s what’s going on here.

That makes sense. I'm ignorant of that symbolism.

I actually really like the John Martin illustrations overall, especially the big landscape scenes. There's an alien melancholy to them that's hard to place.
