The Link Between Alzheimer’s, Estrogen, and Menopause
« on: April 26, 2018, 09:37:52 AM »
Some lady-specific tips to live long and prosper. :)

For a long time, it was assumed women had a higher risk of Alzheimer’s simply because women live longer. But Dr. Mosconi says, women outnumber men two to one in Alzheimer’s diagnoses in every age group: twice as many women as men aged 50, and twice as many women as men aged 80 suffer from Alzheimer’s disease.

The reason? Estrogen. Or the absence of it.

Estrogen, Dr. Mosconi says, has neuroprotective qualities; it also acts as a neurological stimulant. “It literally stimulates certain parts of your brain to be active and to be metabolically engaged.”

aka

Women were once mentally stimulated and engaged.  Then they lose that.

Men don't have that advantage to begin with
All opinions expressed by myself are quite tragically my own, and not those of any other poster or wall hangings.

Well, I hope this doesn't lead to a lot of women rushing to HRT and winding up with ovarian cancer (I think that's the risk with too much estrogen?). I'm glad the article doesn't just recommend that.

The effects of HRT can vary widely, depending on the type of hormones administered, the woman's age, and her health at the beginning of treatment. There is a slight causal increase in the chances of ovarian cancer (about 1 in 1000), but most other effects are significantly positive. Still, it's not for everyone, and it will certainly continue to be tweaked for the foreseeable future.

Ah, ok. Thanks for the correction.
