Help with Latin (Psalm)
« on: April 24, 2018, 05:08:00 PM »
Hello.
I need to put this Psalm 122 (123) into music, so I need to make accents and hyphens. Anyone here who can confirm if it is done properly?
The most problem I have with ae if it is read e. Or uo to be read o.

cán-ti-cum grá-du-um ad te le-vá-vi o-cú-los mé-os qui há-bi-tas in cáe-lis
éc-ce si-cút ó-cu-li ser-vó-rum ad má-num do-mi-nó-rum su-ó-rum si-cút ó-cu-li an-cíl-lae ad má-num dó-mi-nae suae sic ó-cu-li nós-tri ad Dó-mi-num Dé-um nós-trum do-néc mi-se-ré-a-tur nós-tri
mi-se-ré-re nós-tri Dó-mi-ne mi-se-ré-re nós-tri qu-ó-ni-am múl-tum rep-lé-ti sú-mus des-pec-ti-ó-ne
múl-tum rép-le-ta est á-ni-ma nós-tra ob-pro-brí-i a-bun-dán-ti-um et des-pec-ti-ón-is su-per-bó-rum

Quote
canticum graduum ad te levavi
oculos meos qui habitas in caelis

ecce sicut oculi servorum ad manum
dominorum suorum sicut oculi
ancillae ad manum dominae suae sic
oculi nostri ad Dominum Deum nostrum
donec misereatur nostri

miserere nostri Domine miserere
nostri quoniam multum repleti
sumus despectione

multum repleta est anima nostra
obprobrii abundantium et
despectionis superborum

In church Latin, "ae" is the same as "e" and "quo" is like English "quote" (all one syllable).

Don’t set “canticum graduum” to music when you set the rest.

Thank you, but I don't get your cryptic message. What will I do with that?

Thank you. How about the rest? Sometimes I am totally black with accents.

Do nothing with it.  It's basically a description of the psalm.  In the EO tradition, thee psalms of the 18th kathisma are called the "Songs of Ascent"

I have fixed all your accents.  Rule of thumb: in 2 syllable words the first syllable ALWAYS gets the accent.  Also, whenever you have two letter "i"s together, the first one will be short and the second will be long generally.
