Happy St. Patrick's Day!
« on: March 17, 2018, 05:25:30 PM »
I doubt Iconodule and I are the only forum members with some Irish heritage. St. Patrick, pray for us!

Troparion, Tone 3
Holy Bishop Patrick,
Faithful shepherd of Christ's royal flock,
You filled Ireland with the radiance of the Gospel:
The mighty strength of the Trinity!
Now that you stand before the Savior,
Pray that he may preserve us in faith and love!

Kontakion, Tone 4
From slavery you escaped to freedom in Christ's service:
He sent you to deliver Ireland from the devil's bondage.
You planted the Word of the Gospel in pagan hearts.
In your journeys and hardships you rivaled the Apostle Paul!
Having received the reward for your labors in heaven,
Never cease to pray for the flock you have gathered on earth,
Holy Bishop Patrick!
"Love ... is an abyss of illumination, a mountain of fire ... . It is the condition of angels, the progress of eternity" (Climacus).

Venerable Patrick, enlightener of Ireland, pray to God for us! (less prayer needed if you don't overdo it with green beer)

Great grandparents on my Father's side were McConnells, though I'm not sure exactly where they were from.

In spite of my last name, I have something like one Irish ancestor (whom the name comes from, obviously) and one Scots-Irish (Campbell). Funny how last names work.

I had my DNA tested and no Irish. My first name is very Irish though. A few decades ago it was common for foreigners to sound and look more American.  I was baptized Demetrios , but they nick named me Jimmy.
Very common for Demetrios to be translated into Jimmy in the US. To sound more American.
In Greece we have a tradition of naming our first born after the husbands father for a male and husbands mother for a female. Its a roman tradition btw. So if one has many brothers and the brothers have sons. You can imagine the confusion.  So most Greek baptismal names have nick names attached to them to differentiate between cousin's. Jimmy is one of them. In greek its pronounced.  You guest it. Tzimis.
You know what. Ive bin around Irish people my whole life. Fully respect them. I invite them to functions.  Enjoy there company.  Im even waring a green scarf today. So im Irish too for one day.

County Donegal in Northern Ireland is a possibility, the name is from the same root. Though McConnell can also be a Scottish name (and related to the McDonalds and the McDaniels, among others).

I'm Irish on my Dad's side.
My only weakness is, well, never mind

He said he had a horrible house
I looked in it and learnt to shut my mouth

Come back my dream into my arms, into my arms

London is drowning, and I live by the river

Half Arabic & Celtic ancestries being mostly Welsh and a dash of Irish on the Celtic side. Blessed St. Patrick’s Day.
