Some help with particular texts in Katharevousa Greek
« on: February 17, 2018, 11:12:20 PM »
Can anyone help me to make sense out of these two paragraphs, which I need to summarise? I don't need a translation, just to understand what's being communicated. I understood, mostly with the help of a translator, most parts of the rest of the text which seemed important. It's a biography of St. Patriarch Gregory V of Constantinople. The full text is here.

Quote

Quote

"May the Lord our God remember in His kingdom all Holy Catholic Apostolic Church, which heralds the Word of Truth and fearlessly offers and distributes the Holy Oblation despite human deficiencies and persecutions moved by the powers of this world, in all time and unto the ages of ages."

Anyhow when God was asked he said Eastern Orthodox is true Church and not Catholic Church. So come home and enjoy.

Let me give it a try:

1st paragraph:

St. Gregory together with the synodals (bishops) lifted the anathema οn Trachoma imposed in 1767 by Patriarch Samuel I.
Trachoma-Τράχωμα was the practice of buying the groom or the bride (probably influenced by a similar Ottoman Muslim practice); not dowry but literal transaction, purchase and sell. Most common was the selling of the bride to the family of the groom but the opposite was not so uncommon either. This practice is called ἀνδραποδώδης in the text, which is a beautiful yet rare word: ἀνήρ (its oblique form for compounds ἀνδρο-) + πούς (its oblique form -ποδο-) = slavish, servile, abject. It derives from the neuter noun ἀνδράποδον = οf whom only the feet are human.
Patriarch Gregory while he forgave those who were anathematized, he castigated the overuse (abuse) of the practice that was often done out of avarice or greed.

2nd paragraph:

Gregory was gladly resigned (from the See) and left for the Prince Islands where he lived "like a sparrow alone on the housetop" (ps. 101/102) alone and in poverty. While there, he was visited by two very poor widow mothers who were giving their daughters in marriage, so, he gave them the Sultan's gift he kept in a case [obviously a precious gift by the Sultan on Gregory's election as Patriarch] a coat made of the fur from the sable (Martes zibellina), in the text σαμουρόγουνα (sable-fur-coat), who then split in two, and gave the two parts to the widows to sell.
Just 10 months after Callinicus (Gregory's successor) was named Patriarch, he was deposed, and Jeremiah, the bishop of Mytilene became Patriarch. The authorities then (i.e. the Turks) exiled Gregory to Athos. As he received the official order of his exile, Gregory cried aloud: "Return to your rest, O my soul" (ps. 115/116).
He went to the Iveron monastery where he lived for 10 years, and he was loved and respected by the other monks.

Could someone explain this excerpt to me too, please?

Quote

Then the following happened: some deacon, named Parthenios, a learned man and speaker of many European languages, arrived in Elassona bearing a letter of recommendation [it doesn't say by whom] in which he was described as a putative "sightseer of the Greek lands" [i.e. a traveller]. He moved in the Bishop's residence [or the Metropolis, I'd guess the latter], became archdeacon serving under the Metropolitan of Elassona, Parthenios, and stayed there for a year.
The following year he left for Constantinople, appeared before the Ecumenial Patriarch and the Synod, and showed them a (fake) resignation of the Bishop of Elassona, sealed with the Bishop's seal. When he heard [obviously by the Patriarch and the synodals] that such resignation is forbidden by the holy canons, he left, leaving behind the letter of resignation.
After a month, he [the deacon Parthenios] returned to the Synod, and presented a report written by the people of Elassona which announced the repose of their old Archpriest, while at the same time, a servant brought a decree by the Sultan's sister, that ordered the Patriarch to elect "Parthenios and no other", as the next bishop of Elassona.
The Patriarch, received the letter with adequate honours [don't know what that means, he bowed before it? perhaps he did], sat next to the servant and started a friendly conversation with him, and at the same asked Parthenios to leave and return in an hour. While sitting, the Patriarch turned towards the servant and said "this man is a criminal and it's impossible according to the canons of our Church to become a bishop". Having said that, the servant left, and the deacon came in. Τhe Patriarch then, wrote a report informing the Chief-satrap [I'm not familiar with Ottoman titles, perhaps he's the political authority in the city, the Prefect] of the events, and convened the next day, the Synod. He chose the Protosyncellos Joanicius [Ioannikios] as the new bishop of Elasson. He accepted the Elassonian report [that their bishop has died] as being true, but in a fortnight, a report arrived in Constantinople signed by the old bishop of Elassona. Thus, Joanicius [he calls him "ἀοίδιμος" glorious dead] stayed episcopus vagans for three months. After those three months the old bishop of Elasson indeed died, and Joanicius, moved to "the province allotted to him by God" [ἐπαρχίαν θεόθεν λαχοῦσαν]; the forger, having failed his task, disappeared

Nice little anecdote. Is the Patriarch still, st Gregory V the martyr?

Thanks again!

Yes, it's still about him. I wonder how frequent this kind of fraud was historically, there's the notorious case of Pavlos Tagaris, who managed to fool three different churches into making him bishop (Roman Catholic Church, Avignon schism, Eastern Orthodox Church).
