What happens to the monks if a monastery closes?
« on: January 15, 2018, 02:20:00 PM »
Say there is an Orthodox monastery that is very small and most of the monks are very old/have health problems. Say this monastery were to shut down. What would become of the remaining monk(s)?

As far as I know, they would be transferred elsewhere.

The monastery doesn't make the monks, so they should be transferred to another monastery. In not ideal cases, monks may live as monks in the world due to impossibility of living in a proper facility.

This happened with a small Western Rite ROCOR monastery here in town. Of the three monks, one passed away, one, old and in failing health, had to be moved to a nursing home, and the family of the deceased one, who happened to own the property, forced the remaining monk to leave and sold the building. He now rents a house and attends liturgy at our parish.

I knew another monk with a similar arrangement, though he would also go on mission overseas for months at a time.
Blessed Nazarius practiced the ascetic life. His clothes were tattered. He wore his shoes without removing them for six years.

THE OPINIONS HERE MAY NOT REFLECT THE ACTUAL OR PERCEIVED ORTHODOX CHURCH

Take a breath, read Ecclesiastes 1:9.

There are two in my parish: a monk and a nun.
