Resources on chanting
« on: December 17, 2017, 05:11:34 PM »
I'd like to join our cantors, since I sang in the choir at my previous parish.  The lead cantor was excited about it and will provide me with a book, which I intend to use during the holidays to practice.  However, coming from a Maronite parish, I have a lot to learn at a Greek parish.  Can anyone point me to resources for beginners on Byzantine chant?

Send me a PM and I'll give you some access to my google files.  Also, if you're on FB, I'll invite you to an online forum of chanters.

Tonight I was invited to join the male cantors at the chant stand for the service of the Salutations to the Mother of God!  I have much to learn, but rejoiced at this opportunity to praise and honor the Mother of the Lord.

Stay away from it. It is going to lead to a lot of bad habits. I would recommend going through the GOA'S School of Ecclesiastical Music if you want to do learn chanting correctly.

GOA=Greek Orthodox (Archdiocse of) America. They are attached to Holy Cross Hellenic College in Boston, MA, but they do a lot if online training.  I am friends with several of the online instructors so let me know after Pascha if you want an introduction.

She asked because it's the top hit if you google "GOA'S School of Ecclesiastical Music."  http://www.semlebanon.org/sem/home.do
I was looking to compare recordings of it with AFR.  :)
Is any of the above Orthodox?  I have no clue, so there's that.
