The examples of how Orwellian our society has become are rather serious.

No, George and Tony have assured us that in the 'war on terror' it has been necessary to introduce measures to ensure public safety and to defend our freedoms. To say nought of Weapons of Mass Delusion.

Yesterday at the New Labour party conference in Brighton, England, a long time party activist aged 82 years uttered the word nonsense during a speech by Foreign Secretary Jack Straw (touching on Iraq). The frail man was jumped upon by burly male stewards and another party activist who intervened to protest the unnecessary and extreme manhandling by stewards was similarly manhandled and bundled out of the hall. On trying to re-enter the hall the 82 year old man, whose family had fled Nazi Germany in 1937, was arrested under Anti-Terrorism law.

Each and every terrorist act appears to prompt in the UK new demands by Mr Blair's government for new, tougher laws over-turning centuries old freedoms. Each and every time the British public are assured, as are opposition politicians, that the new laws will only be used sparingly and those who pose an extreme threat.

82 year old frail man. A threat to what and to whom? Simple. Free speech and total control. That is Blair's constant need, he cannot cope with dissent or criticism.

The incident was both televised and broadcast nationally.

The party and Mr Blair have since apologised - they had absolutely no choice following the broadcast and the reaction to events. Today the good man returned to the conference to cheers and thunderous applause.

An interesting way of putting it. Yes, our society has become Orwellian, if by that you mean that it has become socialistic. Grin

Hey, so I'm in a pop-alt-punk-folk-prog band called "Affable Dregs" and we have a new album coming out, titled "Vicious Turnips Always Taste Most Delicious." We'd really appreciate your support!

And if you examine Blair's circle you find no end of men with a very left past. They were control freaks then and whatever political apparel they appear to sport now they remain control freaks.

The sad thing is that robust politicians of the Labour party in the past campaigned on the hustings, met with hecklers and could engage with them.

This lot ape the fictional character of Big Brother more and more as time passes. It isn't the unspeakable monster Jihadists presently eroding our freedoms but those in power. And all because they cannot bear to be challenged, to hear dissent or for any to suggest that the Emperor actually has no clothes.

It`s not a claim, it`s an opinion. I think it is drivel. Plain and simple.

Well-thought opinions often have reasons behind them, sometimes even facts.

Fwiw, while I don't quite understand the distinction that Mo is making, I can understand his not wanting to pursue a discussion. I myself intended on giving some thoughts about some of the stuff posted, but when I saw how much was there, and all that was said, I figured I'd probably be better off (as would everyone else! SmileyÂÂ  if I just left a line or two and moved on. The Charles Rangle thing, for example... yeah, people (ie. Democrats) were pushing for a draft... but why? So that they could deceptively bash Bush during the election and stir up young people into thinking that the Iraq war was going to make reconsituting the draft necessary. It was all a political ploy, not a sign that our government is becoming Orwellian. If someone is going to quote something by Rangle, why not point out the blatantly (reverse-)racist remarks that he recently made (emulating Jesse Jackson)? He plays the fiddle as the inner city burns. There is enough absurd and sickening stuff in society as it is, there is no need to look for takeovers and conspiracies and the like.
