We talk about procreation here; is anyone doing it?

NB-- if you are unmarried, answer the question anyway.

I think the question is bound to produce a faulty answer.  There are some who have never used contraception but whom God has not blessed with a child; single people being mixed in with married people is going to skew the answer; and it seems to me that what you are going for is confirmation that the majority of the posters here do not have children or do not have many children and that therefore, you being a person with multiple children are in a better position because of life experience to talk about matters of procreation. Or am I wrong?

About which part?ÂÂ  :D

I'm really not interested in the "need to breed" threads, at least as far as participating is concerned. I do think, however, that these discussions do need some grounding in reality. Talking about having children is very abstract in a culture where marriage is often late, where there is pressure to delay children, etc., etc., etc. If those who are talking about the obligation to have children are actually putting it off for one reason or another, the conclusion one might draw is that this obligation doesn't rank very high in the scheme of things. Or worse-- that it is someone else's job to have the babies. On the other hand, most of us might be college students or unmarried young people who obviously aren't in a position to start yet. But that does tend to render the discussion something of a bull session, does it not?

Of course, it may also mean that anyone with four kids doesn't have time for internet forums.  ;D :D ;D

What's there to be cynical about? Right now we're up to about 1.3 children per member, the meaning of which is left to the reader. It is a datum, not an argument.

I put one kid for my hubby and I, but if you were to count the two of us as well then I guess you'd have ta say there's three kids in our family :)  I think my husband and I are definetly big kids because we both enjoy playing games and stuff like that.  (no offense meant of course!) I very much want to have more children of our own as well though chances are we'll have to settle for just one, or have to adopt since my docs are so negative on me getting pregnant again. *sighs*

I put two even though the second one is actually 'on the way'. I have one son and we're expecting another child on 18th December (strangely enough the feast day of the saint we had decided would be the next child's patron way back when the first was born). The sonographer told my wife she thinks we're expecting a daughter (I wasn't interested in knowing the sex, personally) which would be quite nice, but I don't hold too much to the accuracy of such predictions.

God has considered us worthy (which we aren't) of being the parents of three children. We'd love to have more but God probably wants us to learn to manage with these three first.

Which of course is a hopelessly skewed statistic since it takes into account people (like myself) who are at present unmarried and thus not in a position to have children and it also is skewed because it includes many younger people that will likely have more children.

Skewed from what? What number is supposed to appear?

If one wanted something to compare against, one would need to work through the demographics of what a population of, I don't know, 18-60 year olds or something would have in the way of kids. There's probably a way to claw this out of census data, but the work involved exceeds my interest in finding out the answer. For all we know, 1.5 kids could be a reasonable number of present kids for a population whose average total kids might be 3 or 4 or 5.

I have 5, could have had 9:

1 miscarriage
1 abortion (medical)
1 suprise
2 miscarriages
1 suprise (but i sort of wanted 2 anyway)
1 oops, what's one more (that i think was a twin, lost one of them)
1 oops, what's one more that turned out to be twins.

None of this was because i wanted to procreate excessively-- it just turned out that way, the birth control doesnt work if the hub won't wait 5 minutes.

My husband says that this is what happens when you mix alcohol and porn. I think he is right.  :o

Of course, porn, getting drunk, abortions & birth control are all non orthodox. But why would you post such scandalous things in public where your kids could one day read them?

I am also rather scandalized by your posting.  Hardly appropriate things for an Orthodox Christian to engage in.

I have to second that...I agree with 'jim beam' on this one.  I had a miscarriage, and I wasn't supposed to even have ANY children due to my heart problems and the fact that it was dangerous for me to begin with, now I've been strongly advised to have no more children or our baby could lose her mother.  Having an abortion is really nothing to brag about either, I'm not in your shoes, but I really think I have to agree with Rob on this one....you need to be more careful with what you post online, it sounds like you are bragging and it makes you sound like a bad person, I don't think you'd want your children to read what you've written in this thread....please be more careful next time! Although, some birth control is permitted in the Orthodox church, but only the non abortive kind.  At least, that is what a priest told me.  Please please be more careful!

in Christ,
the sinner, Mary :(

P.S. I do not regret having our baby daughter either, and I do want more children, but we'll most likely have to adopt, it just angers me to hear that people would want to have an abortion, would choose to kill an innocent child when they could just give that child up for adoption and let someone who can't have children adopt that baby instead.  just my two cents.

Mary, she said that the abortion was medical, which IMO is no more blame-worthy than a spontaneous abortion (aka miscarriage, which you yourself have had, and which I think something like 25% of conceptions end in).

I don`t know about this one Jimmy, boy. Just last week,my priest and I were sipping on some outstanding vodka. I know some of my Greek friends from church would also take exception with your statement. They would probably say something like.."Oh! Enjoying various drinks is one thing, getting drunk is another entirely.  I fail to see how a moderate drinker would object to being opposed to drunkeness.

Well--and this is to Mr. Beam as well as the other scandalized folks--aurelia has said on the convert forum that her husband engages in such activity while she--being the one who takes the kids faithfully to a GOA parish in town every Sunday for their catechumenate--would very much like him to stop.

I don't think she approves of these activities at all.  I admire her for her steadfastness with someone so different in the house--and a husband, at that!

Right on, Pedro!  :)  Aurelia should get our support, not hasty remarks.

Aurelia has been through *a lot* with the miscarriages and the *medical* procedure.  (Remember, sometimes things go wrong and unhappily this has to happen if the mother is to live.)

ah, but at the time i wasn't.  I'm a convert, remember?

I don't like porn. My husband does.  I find it revolting.  I like a glass of wine now and again, he is convinced I and he have to be drunk so that I'm "more fun".  It's a conflict of opinion we have.  He may have been drunk, but I wasn't.

Very true, and I thank you for that.  yes the abortion was medically necessary...as was my tubal ligation after the twins...I'd rather not die right now, I have kids to raise!!!

In defense of Aurelia, she is one of my favorite posters.  Why?  Because she inspires me.  My husband isn't interested in becoming Orthodox, and that makes things hard sometimes.   Aurelia?  She found what was right for her, and knew it was right for her five children, and has perservered.   I'm sure it's not easy, and she has always been so honest about everything here.   Can you imagine getting five children ready on Sunday?  And trying to keep them all happy?  And her positive attitude about a lot of it is contagious.    I understand, too, her post was misunderstood in some areas.    We have all done that.

I really think Aurelia deserves high praise for what she has tried to do.   She inspires me, and many others. Sometimes there is a twist of humor in there, too.  We all need humor sometimes.

((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))) thanks Irene, you're one of my faves too!!  *keep meaning to add you to my buddy list, i dont have anyone on there, and I wasnt in here for a long time*

I will confess that I dont always bring all of them.  Definetly the two younger girls (especially as one is in the children's choir) but unless I have the oldest with me (which isn't always possible) I alternate boys, one one week, one the next.  And occasionally none, so I can actually go to church. I tried both by myself and they divided and conquered, and it wasn't pretty.   And the Yia Yia Patrol was not amused.  ::)  Seriously, they are a handful, so far we have made it to at most 10 minutes actually in the church service itself before we have to go to the quiet room, then the nursery.

"Btw, are we counting step children (that don't live full time in the home) in the poll?"

Of course, why not, they come to your house and eat your food and draw on your walls and complain "I dont wanna go such and such is on tv"  like the rest of them!     ;D

My wife and I haveÂÂ  five children all from this marriage (we have been married only once).

I have 7 grandchildren and 1 step-granddaughter, who oddly enough while being born to non-orthodox parents has an orthodox great grandmother who is thrilled that the grand-daughter's father married my daughter (They now have three children) and her grand-daughter is coming to the Orthodox Church Services and Sunday School with us.ÂÂ  So I guess I have the total of 8 grandchildren (4 boys and 4 girls).

What a blessing children and grandchildren are!!!!

In the poll, I counted in one biological, and two step children.  We have three cats who I was debating whether or not to count, because they act like toddlers, "no, no, don't touch that, no, no, don't climb up there", (crash)  ÃƒÆ’‚  ;D

PS hi aurelia    Whether you take one, two, three, four, five, to church, you have a halo for trying  ÃƒÆ’‚Â

Thank you, Ebor.

My children are: 15yo boy; 13yo girl; 9 yo girl; 6yo boy (he will be 7 next week); 4yo boy; 2 yo boy; and Symeon was born November 16th.

The first four are "converts", the last three cradle Orthodox--well Symeon will be baptised on the 15th of this month.

Ah, two teenagers.  We get our first teenager in less then a month when our older boy turns 13....

Should I just start cringing now?

As they used to say in the English courts "May God have mercy on your soul"

We have raised our five thru their teenage years and let me tell you---for us the boys were much easier than the girls.

Remember to hold the line on what is right, they will appreciate it after they are teenagers, be consistent and fair, and most important of all----attend church as a family together.

Thomas

My teens aren't too bad. My daughter is like a 2nd mother and is a great help in a pinch---but tends to be moody and bossy at times. My son is just like his father but tends to be sarcastic at times. It helps that we homeschool so I don't get a LOT of attitude. And we DO attend church as a family. My son has been called our priest's right hand man at the altar. He serves every chance he gets.

So far it hasn't been that bad---it will let you know though when I have 3 teens in a few years! LOL

And I have to agree---so far, the boys are easier! LOL

Strebekah,

Hi and welcome!  ÃƒÆ’‚ My mouth dropped when I read you home school, on top of already being so busy.
I am nominating you for a halo!
ÂÂ
The next time I hear myself whine, "I need time for me"  ÃƒÆ’‚  ÃƒÆ’‚ well, let's just say, you helped me to gain some perspective!

Welcome again, good to have you here!
