CNN - The wild, extinct supercow returning to Europe
« on: January 10, 2017, 03:03:21 PM »
Quote
...For thousands of years the aurochs were the largest land mammals in Europe, until the rise of human civilization decimated their numbers, and the last of the species died in Poland in 1627 -- one of the first recorded cases of extinction.

Conservationists now believe the loss of the keystone herbivore was tragic for biodiversity in Europe, arguing that the aurochs' huge appetite for grazing provided a natural "gardening service" that maintained landscapes and created the conditions for other species to thrive.

The theory is now being put to the test, as a "near 100% substitute" of the beast is returned to the forests.

Although things are clearer in the article itself, the title is a bit misleading.  This creature is not "returning" to Europe.  It is a new breed of cattle being introduced to fill, where it can, the extinct aurochs' niche.

We live in amazing times though.  I'm eagerly awaiting the return of the thylacine and the mammoth.

I want to ride an Archaeopteryx mid-air.

A pterosaur might be a better investment.

Just steer clear of Eowyn if you want to keep his head on his neck.

Thylacinus cynocephalus, Greek for "dog-headed pouched one") was the largest known carnivorous marsupial of modern times. ... the general appearance of a medium-to-large-size dog, except for its stiff tail and abdominal pouch (reminiscent of a kangaroo)

As a marsupial, it was not closely related to these placental mammals, but because of convergent evolution it displayed the same general form and adaptations. Its closest living relative is thought to be either the Tasmanian devil or the numbat. The thylacine was one of only two marsupials to have a pouch in both sexes (the other being the water opossum).

What is it with marsupials and Australia?
A dog with a kangaroo-type pouch?

I think these beasts are the ones responsible for the founding of Moldovia.
Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it; but if he did anything so that he may do it no more.
A hasty quarrel kindles fire,
and urgent strife sheds blood.

if you spit on it, it will be put out;

Imagine if you could gaze at an auroch while driving on rural highways.

Those rib chops would be amazing.
