Happy Coptic New Year
« on: September 11, 2016, 06:17:05 PM »
This being the 1st of Thoot, I just wanted to wish all my Coptic friends a happy new year!  I attended a Coptic liturgy this morning, and two infants were baptized.  It was beautiful, as always.
Axios and many years to you, Fr. Trenham!

Happy New Year to all the African Orthodox ;)

I guess there are two events, or two facets of the event. It is the new year for the Coptic culture. That has nothing to do with us, but tben, do any Copts celebrate it still as the Egyptian new year, culturally, not just as a church feast? A generation or two rural areas still used the Coptic calendar in day to day life, but I think that has passed now.

Secondly, it is the ecclesiastical new year in the church. In the Coptic rite, it comes 3 or so days earlier than in the Byzantine rite. And of course, that leaves it 10 days off those in the new calendar. But essentially it is the same feast for almost all Orthodox Christians, apart from a few days variance for local custom. So the ecclesiastical new year belongs to us as to all Orthodox, but the Copts are also still welcome to their Coptic new year as part of their culture.
