Please Pray for New Orleans
« on: August 28, 2005, 11:34:57 AM »
Please pray 'for temperate weather' for New Orleans as well the the entire Gulf Coast.

With the city being an average of 6' below sea level facing sustained winds of 175 mph (gusts being higher) and a 12'-20' tidal surge, they need all of our help.

When I lived there, this was the storm they all feared. A mandatory evacuation has been ordered, and there is no quick way out of the city. An estimated 100,000 people who have no means of leaving the city will be brought to the Superdome, which hopefully will provide them shelter.

Things are expectetd to be so bad that those not evacuating (hospital workers, law enforcement, and the media) are being told to get to the third floor of buildings... :o

Of interest is that New Orleans has the oldest continuous Greek parish in the US, and the Ecumenical Patriarch was planning on going there this January...we'll see what happens, I guess.

Lord Have Mercy!

CNN's saying that the worst case senario is NO under 15 feet of water (and it would take 4 months to pump all that water out).

God help them.
Now where were we? Oh yeah - the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn’t have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

Announcement Concerning Hurricane Katrina
Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America

August 29, 2005

Responding to incoming information from news reports concerning Hurricane Katrina, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America has expressed the deep and prayerful concern of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America for the safety of life and property in cities and towns throughout the Gulf Coast region. He said:

“We are watching with high alertness and loving care the conditions as they continue to unfold regarding this powerful storm. We are praying fervently to God for the safety of all those in the path of Hurricane Katrina in nearby cities and towns along the Gulf Coast, particularly in the vulnerable city of New Orleans, which is home to Holy Trinity Cathedral, the first Greek Orthodox parish in America.”

His Eminence also affirms the readiness and commitment of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese to offer, by the help of God, all possible assistance to communities as the need arises in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Well, I  think our prayers have helped, as the storm weakened before it made landfall, and where Katrina did strike it was in a less densely populated area than New Orleans (still, unlucky for those in its brunt, but in the Lord's mercy less people were harmed).

Now the bad news: some people are potentially committing suicide while in the Superdome  :'( ...

Please, please remember to pray for everyone.

Prayers also for a blessed repose for all those who have lost their lives in this tragedy; that their souls may find rest and that God would comfort those who mourn the loss of their loved ones.

May their memory be eternal.

In Christ,
Aaron

I urge all of our priests to hold Paraklesis and for the Faithful to attend so that we may pray to Almighty God for the strength and wisdom to assist the victims of this unimaginable catastrophe."
