What you really need is a woman.

I saw this in Quotable Quotes, but it should probably also be in Notable Edifying Posts.
Don't you have a divorce to tend to?

nothing,

You have quite a history of throwing around ad hominem attacks (like the one above) where they are not permitted.  In light of that history, I am imposing a warning of forty-five (45) points for this post.

If you would like to appeal this decision, please PM me.

I meant my response to JamesR's comment as a general recommendation to the forum, a la "It is not good that the man should be alone" (Gen. 2:18). If people thought I was ganging up on WGW, I'm sorry.

Why join the Gideons?

What's with the  need to join all these organizations?

I was always taught not to join any club or organization...no sororities, societies, etc.

Only the Church.

That's what my heterodox upbringing taught as well, so maybe it's not as uncommon a principle as some here think.

But it's imposible to follow and therefore not true for either of you. Both of you are citizens of the US, Liza is a crew member of the company she works at - and these are not Church organisations.

Well obviously you are thinking of usages of "organization" that we didn't at all mean.

I have read some Orthodox cririticism of this entity, but I wanted to know what the overall consensus is as I am considering joining if they will admit me as an Orthodox; Ive been attending and rather enjoying their breakfasts

I think the consensus is that the somehow secret Holy Bibles into hotel rooms, and distribute them at college campuses. I, too, would like to more about this very secretive society.

They don't secret the Bibles in (usually, although since they are businessmen who travel, occasionally if they find themselves at a hotel without a Bible in the room, they will place one, as they carry the compact variety on their person or in their luggage).

The main Bibles are either KJV or ESV (they stopped using the NIV after the recent radical revision), and are shipped to hotels in cardboard boxes if the manager agrees to let them place Bibles in a particular hotel.  The maids then are the people who actually "place" the Bibles.  I believe additional Bibkes are provided for any staff member who wants them, and extras are provided to replace any a guest takes (which is allowed; if you have a need for a Bible the Gideons do not object terribly if you remove them, although its courteous to make a small donation).  So a hotel with 200 rooms might get 250 or 300 Bibles, a hotel with 1000 rooms like some Las Vegas casinos and some major urban hotels might get 1200 or more.  After an average of two years, the Gideons send a complete set of replacement Bibles and arrange for the maids to return the old ones to the Gideons.

The old Bibles then have fheir hardcover bindings removed and recycled (pulped I think), and are rebound in a soft-cover, and these are distributed to prisons and gaols.  This step is neccessary because prisoners can make a wide variety of lethal weapons from hardcover books, and use these to attack other prisoners or inmates.  This is a danger even in a well run, medium security prison with spare capacity; in a county gaol or state or provincial penitentiary the risk is acute (by the way, I can think of no greater insult to the Christian faith than to take our Holy Scriptures or other sacred objects, modify them into lethal weapon, and use that to murder someone; as food for thought, we are also sacred objects, being temples of the Holy Spirit).

I was always taught not to join any club or organization...no sororities, societies, etc.

Only the Church.

+ 1

And I would include political parties, the fraternal order of police, and the military in this list as well.

Selam

Since when are the military and police "clubs?"  You really malign and cheapen what these people do if that's the extent of your regard.

They are organizations, and as Liza pointed out, the Church is the only organization to which we should belong.

Selam

So all those faithful of the Roman Empire who served in her armies should have  not joined?

No. Militarism is antithetical to the Gospel.

I didn't call them "clubs." I called them organizations, the definition of which others have already discussed and clarified in the context of this discussion. Swearing oaths and taking pledges to take up the sword prepare to shed blood is by no means compatible with the Gospel.

All,

The topic of this thread is "The Gideons", not "My Objections to People Joining the Armed Services, Law Enforcement, or other (Quasi-)Political Organisations".  Take the tangents to other, more appropriate threads.

I was a Gideon for one year.  It costs about 60$ a year to be a member.  They target professional men.  You have to be invited and "vetted" somewhat as they talk to your pastor. There is an organization for women called the Auxiliary.

There is a statement of faith that is pretty basic that you have to agree to found at the link below.

http://www.gideons.org/FAQ/FAQ.aspx

The mission of the Gideon's is simply to distribute Bibles.  It's that simple.  Their focus is to produce and distribute Bibles as far and wide as possible.  They target schools, hotels, hospitals and prisons but also will distribute Bibles on the street.  There are different colored Bibles for different distributions.

Gideons can buy their own New Testaments without the Gideon lamp symbol on them.  A Gideon should not be using a Bible with a lamp symbol because these are designed to be given away not used for personal reasons.

I am highly suspect of the idea of maid's distributing Bibles.  I've distributed Bibles to hotels as a Gideon.  We were accompanied by a manager but the Gideons were the ones to do the checking/exchanging of the Bibles.  Brown pocket new testaments are bibles that Gideon members buy to personally give away to people.

The Gideons have pretty strict rules that perhaps not every camp is as strict in following.

BTW,  I have some brown pocket NT + Psalms ESV left over if anyone wants one PM me.

FWIW, A couple more points:

Gideons follow the law and have very strict rules, esp. for distributing bibles around public schools.  They desire to avoid confrontation/litigation and circumstances where they could be accused of subverting the "separation of church and state".

There are other organizations that provide Bibles for free.  For example, if a poor church needs Bibles they can contact an organization like the American Bible Society.  Gideon Bibles are not produced to stock churches.

What I was told by the group is they give the Bibles to the hotels and then these Bibles become part of the standard "inventory" of items which are placed in the rooms by the maids, or replaced if they are missing.  In this manner, those rooms which are occupied when the Bibles are delivered can get their Bibles if there is a Do Not Disturb sign in place, whereas otherwise, it would be logistically impossible for the Gideons to stock the hotel if they personally had to enter every room.

What you really need is a woman.

That particular advice coming from you is hilarious.

What's hilarious is a grown man believing that he must belong to a fraternal organization in order to have meaning and purpose in his life. As if speaking Latin, secret handshakes, or stupid bumper stickers really made one any less of a loser (not that the OP is a loser). That goes for political parties as well as workers' unions, sports teams, clubs, and the military, which is nothing more than a slave to military-industrial complex in order to advance the zionist agenda. Only a wife and family can truly give a man what he seeks. Either way, the joke is on you, because I dated a hot 27 year old college girl for two weeks before she dumped me because I was 15 minutes late to our Starbucks date.

Police, fair enough. They deserve more respect. At least when they are not [vulgar verb deleted by Dominika] to confiscated child porn. But he has a point about the military. When was the last time they truly fought for something that was just? That is not to say that they may not have believed that they were doing so, but we all know the truth. Globalism, the military-industrial complex, the zionist agenda and neocons etc.

You waited a whole year just to say this says a lot more about you than about the girl who dumped you.

Just because you dated a hot girl doesn't mean you "know better."  She probably dumped you because she realized how immature you are and looked for an excuse as a way out.

In fact, I challenge you to show any girl you ask out this post you made.

And judging by your return here after being dumped, you seem to come back even sadder.  Sorry to hear about your breakup, but it's no excuse to continue being bitter here.

I saw their website and apparently you must be a evangelical/protestant to be part of the Gideons, in the portuguese version of the website, when I clicked in the FAQ it direct me to the english page, so I think this requirement is international.

He can continue at orthonorm's legacy thread on dating.  That should suffice.

Why just the other day Mor Ephrem and I were discussing the topic of thread resurrecting!

Laugh it up, Betas. JamesR is tearing up the campus with his newfound virility. He just made half the local female population pregnant with his OC.net posts alone.

JamesR is too much of a coffee connoisseur to meet with a girl at a Starbucks. He dodged a bullet IMO.

Either way, the joke is on you, because I dated a hot 27 year old college girl for two weeks before she dumped me because I was 15 minutes late to our Starbucks date.

My, my, the jerks did not hesitate to return to jerking the moment I returned after a year hiatus.

So what stick has been up your behind lately, Mina? I mean, apart from being an overweight loser who still gets his rocks off from cyberbullying someone from an online message board? And then in that typically condescending, holier-than-thou Oriental tone you and your ilk love to employ? I mean, clearly I had a profound impact upon you and Hecma for that matter if the homoerotic circle jerk is still continuing even after my yearly absence. You can give me a green dot if it compensates for your penis envy, an orange one if you are feeling extra frisky tonight, but know that I am not and never will stand idly by while you and the other "Christians" on this forum disrespect me for no reason other than who I am. The same goes for the brown-skinned bully Mor as well, seeing as I know he is just dying to join the circle jerk.

In this single post you used so many ad hominems toward a few forum members, so to prevent you to not go even more ahead in offending other people, I am giving you 50% warning. Moreover, your posts in this thread are a total off-topic and it is also against the forum rules.
Other participants: please, keep your posts on the topic, instead of JamesR life.

I actually met her in one of my college classes. Apparently she was impressed by my speeches. Though otherwise I agree, a bullet was dodged indeed. Good to see you again, btw. I am genuinely glad that you are still here, friend.

I think the Gideons are an American organization.

Gideons is Canadian - it is based in my hometown about 5 minutes from my home in Ontario.
