Prosecutors are investigating the death of a 17-year-old Egyptian girl during a banned female genital mutilation (FGM) operation at a private hospital on Sunday.

The victim, Mayar Mohamed Mousa, died from an illegal procedure carried out by medical staff at a hospital in the region of Suez. On Monday, authorities shut down the hospital in order to question those involved in the operation.

“Performers of such criminal operations must face strict measures,” Egypt’s National Council for Women said in a statement.

Mousa’s twin sister underwent the same operation just before Mousa entered surgery. Health officials suspect Mousa suffered a stroke while under anaesthesia.
