Some wonderful pics of Decani Monastery
« on: August 10, 2005, 10:59:34 AM »
For those interested, here is very brief history of Decani Monastery along with a link for some excellent pictures taken:

Visoki Decani Monastery is situated in the western part of the Serbian Province of Kosovo and Metohia. It was built between1327 and 1335 by the Serbian medieval king St. Stephen of Decani and was dedicated to the Ascension of the Lord. The monastery is settled in the picturesque valley of the Bistrica river surrounded by the mountains and forests of the Prokletije mountain range It is the largest and best preserved medieval monastery in Serbia. During its turbulent history the Monastery was an important spiritual centre with developed artistic and intellectual activities. Although the monastery buildings suffered damage from the Turkish occupation, the church has been completely preserved with beautiful 14th century fresco paintings. Today a young brotherhood of 30 brethren lives in the monastery continuing the centuries old tradition of the past. The brotherhood has developed various activities: wood carving, icon painting, book publishing and is also active in the missionary work. The beautiful monastic services are served according to the typicon of Mount Athos.

SouthSerb,

Thank-you for posting the wonderful link.  I was actually wondering about a few of the icons, I thought maybe you guys might be able to shed some light on them for me.

First, thre is one of Christ Enthroned, where there is an Angel of the Lord on His left side, and a bird with a crown around its head.  What does that bird symbolize?  I have never seen it before.

There was another icon of the greatmartyr St. George.  On the depiction of St. George on horseback, there is another youth depicted holding a cistern or jug of some sort.  Who is the youth?  Also, on the ground, where there lies the slayed beast, there is a woman, holding something in her hand.  Any idea on who the woman is?

Again, thank you for posting the link.  The good Lord keep and preserve the Fathers at Decani, and all the holy monasteries of the world, who pray, night and day, for our salvation.

In Christ,
Theodore (Ted)

Ciznic, you're no match for TomS.  Perhaps you should take lessons from him.  Namely that first you must espouse an anti-Orthodox prorestant belief and then defend it with shoddy protestant scholarship.  For example you might want to try "Why do we have monasteries?  They were made to control people and take the power from the people and give it to priests (Jack Chick told me so BTW)."

Yeah.  I was thinking abou complaining about monks with computers and tape measures, but . . .

And anyway, I was actually trying to pick a fight with a serb.

I'd say thanks for posting the pics, but then I'd have to admit that my complaint wasn't serious, and I just can't do that.

If anyone looking at the link of the monastery can tell me a little more about the icon features that I previously mentioned, I would greatly appreciate it.  Even leave me a message.
Thanks.
