THE HISTORIAN, by Elizabeth Kostova

Vampire story - the congflagration of the Vlad Tepes (the Implaer) lore and Eastern European vampire lore ala Bram Stoker. Wonderful historical overview of the period of Vlad Tepes (after the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans), along with the geography of the region (esp. Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria). Story is set in the 1930's to 1970's as an historical investigation mystery/thriller (hence the title).

The heroes are all pretty much secular rationalisitc scholars, but the book gives a very sympathetic and reasonably well-informed treatment to Eastern Orthodoxy. Kostova also is well aware of the differences between Eastern and Western Christianity and handles them well!

If you like the fantasy/fiction genres, you'll like this book.

Brother Aidan,

Thanx for the recommendation - sounds like it might be up my alley. I will look into it. Smiley
