Server Reprovision Friday 09/25/15
« on: September 19, 2015, 11:40:47 AM »
Friends,

Probably next Friday, I am going to bring the site down and completely reprovision the server from scratch...it's been a long time in coming, but I just haven't had the time to do it. People have kindly offered to help me, but then I haven't had time to train them :(  Sorry about this!! But I am going to reprovision the entire server and update the software as well. Just a head's up.

Thank you,
Anastasios

I will forget this and mutter curses under my breath while wondering why the site is down.

Update: The forum will be down between 8 AM and 8 PM on Friday for the reprovisioning (and other updated and adjustments).  The forum may come back up sooner, but this is the time being set aside for the work (worst case).

Thank you for your patience!

I just loaded the forum after a few days away and when I saw the red news text, at first I thought it was a message saying I was banned. And I was like, "What on earth did I do?!" I'm glad I'm not banned!

(I guess I associated the red text in the news area with being banned because that's how it works on another forum I used to frequent-the ban message is in red text.)
This is something cute and innocent.

Sorry it took so much longer than I expected to fix the forum, but once we went into the weekend, I was not able to dedicate 100% to the effort.

The site should be working now on the new server. Please let me know if you get any errors, however. I was not able to do some visual/stylistic upgrades, but didn't want to keep the site down any further. I will take it down again in a few days to complete those.

One observation: there are no more email notifications when subscribing to threads.

Are people receiving email notifications when someone sends them a PM?

I've never received an email notification for anything I've done on the site. Maybe that is a setting somewhere that has to be reset?

Email notifications are a personal setting and vary from person to person.

That being said, I need to configure a proper email server; until then, there won't be any notifications. I will try to get that fixed first since I know a lot of people rely on it.

Not too much at first glance. I had intended to do a server reprovision and then proceed with some new features and stuff, but due to the setbacks in the first part, I was not able to do the second yet.

That being said:

2x the RAM on the server = site will run faster
4x the space = room for future growth
new graphical interface for managing the server = faster for me to do stuff behind the scenes

I am still having trouble downloading pictures as an attachment. I receive an error message saying to contact an administrator because it is full.

I can post images using the [ img] codes, but I do not want to copy dynamic pictures.

Can we get HTTPS protection for this site? It would greatly improve security, reliability, and even search result score on search engines. I think with the new server speed it can afford it.

Most Blessed Anastasios our father and master,

Please put the "Rules" back in the menu bar at the top.  :)

The unworthy Mor Ephrem, humble supplicant before God.

Even the link to the rules doesn't work

Dear Anastasios,

I understand you are very busy.  But if we have to explain the rules to the posters, we NEED them back online.  Thank you.

Mina

In keeping with the traditions of Orthodoxy, I know change does not happen quickly.  But I was hoping we would go back to the Old Traditionalism of posting our forum rules?

As a stop gap, perhaps they could be posted as a sticky in Board News or some such place.

No.

I like the no deleting policy. Makes things more transparent and makes both posters and mods accountable for actions posted and taken.

I just wish warnings were still embedded into posts across the board.

I go back and forth on that.  It was a more transparent way of addressing violations, but there are people who like to quote those warnings against others and create problems.  When the new warning system--which does not allow embedding--came along, I thought their absence would prevent people from misusing the warnings while informing violators of the reasons for their penalty and saving moderators a little extra work.  Instead, I had at least one person accuse me of abusing my moderator privileges by not publishing the warnings for all to see (even after explaining how embedding was no longer possible) so that no one could hold me accountable.  As it turned out, the very next warning I had to impose was on one of those people, so I did it in the form of a separate but public post in response to the offending post, and I have done this ever since.  I think all moderators have come to adopt a more or less similar approach.

Users should be mature enough to post only what they want to post and to stand by it.  If they want to issue an apology or a retraction, they can do it without deleting the previous post.  We already have unstable people who post stuff and then abuse the edit function to delete it entirely even after people have read it and some damage has been done.  To give those people carte blanche to delete whatever they want whenever they want for whatever reason will just enable those people to be even more irresponsible.

Well, if you're going to pull the Christian card, I suppose I could expect Christians not to spend so much time online posting on discussion boards and watching bizarre cartoons and spend more time serving their local communities, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned, and in general living according to the gospel.

Obviously neither of us considers discussion boards absolutely incompatible with Christianity, so let's drop that.

We can be forgiving of transgressions without giving people the right to expect that they can commit them anywhere anytime with no consequences.  As I said above, besides the limited window for editing, there are already ways to apologise or issue retractions without deleting.  Those ways require a little more humility than is required to click "delete".  That's also Christian.

From what I see from certain posters still recently, you have a 15 minute grace period to edit what you post.

There should be at least some kind of system where you get a limited number of deletes, and any further you would have to speak to or at least request a mod for why you did or want to delete the post. I think that would be a fair compromise, wouldn't it? As a matter of fact, I think that system already exists on some sites.

This system has had a history of database errors whenever the delete function has been used by users or mods either at OC.net or at E Cafe. Anastasios is fully aware of this problem. Mods at these two boards can edit or move posts and threads into "purgatorio" or the mod archives, but they avoid  the delete function.

The software that runs the site is what it is.

Suggesting different software for a site you don't own/pay for is just one of those 'wasting breath' efforts.

Whether other sites have such things, not going to change this on this site.

Arguing about what imaginary features you could get.

Be thankful the site is here, and still free.

Note that changing the forum software would either require some serious SQL hacking or a loss of older posts; such migrations are possible but they are a major pain, and the site just upgraded anyway.  The current warning system is highly desirable IMO, as on many forums you just have to ban users or delete posts, whereas this system allows a more nuanced approach.  That said, the fact it is so unstable that deleting posts causes database errors is a very good argument for a nightly database dump.

I don't think it's going to be fixed.
Why is that, may I ask?
Because, as TheTrisagion indicated above, it's a "problem" you have complete ability to fix yourself? ;)

Can someone please upgrade the forum software so that users (or at least mods) may delete posts without the site crashing?

No.

Why?

Users should be mature enough to post only what they want to post and to stand by it.  If they want to issue an apology or a retraction, they can do it without deleting the previous post.  We already have unstable people who post stuff and then abuse the edit function to delete it entirely even after people have read it and some damage has been done.  To give those people carte blanche to delete whatever they want whenever they want for whatever reason will just enable those people to be even more irresponsible.

Most forums already have edit and delete functions of some sort. I would expect a Christian to be more forgiving of transgressions than secular ones.

In 2004, a user deleted 700 of her posts in the span of 2 hours on a Sunday morning when she knew all of the admins and mods would likely be in church. As a result, numerous threads became quite confusing. That's why you can't delete or edit your posts after a certain amount of time.

In situations where someone really, truly needed his or her posts deleted after the fact, I have obliged them on a case-by-case basis (i.e. threats to physical safety, etc.)

Past posts reflect stages of my life before my baptism and may not be accurate expositions of Orthodox teaching. Also, I served as an Orthodox priest from 2008-2013, before resigning.

Thank you Anastasios for bringing back the rules! :)
Vain existence can never exist, for "unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain." (Psalm 127)

If the faith is unchanged and rock solid, then the gates of Hades never prevailed in the end.

I can't click smilies and have them inserted. This may be a Windows 10 Microsoft Edge browser issue though, I have not tried Firefox yet.

realize that this is a very small issue, but any way we can get the stars back, rather than the square blocks. Even if the numbers dont change, would prefer seeing stars to blocks
