Well, the new-church in Mexico has sold the rights of property of the icon of Our Lady of Guadalupe, venerated by both Orthodox and Catholics, to an american money-delivering enterprise.

MEXICO DF (Reuters)

According to the press and the religious authoritites, thousands of Mexicans in the United States will be invited to send money to their famillies in Mexico through an enterprise which adquired rights of exclusivity to utilise the venerated icon of Our Lady of Guadalupe in its advertising campaign.

The magazine "Proceso" in its more recent edition, informed that the firm Viotran, settled in Orlando, Florida, adquired "rights of property" over the religious image for 12,5 million dolars. Through a contract between the firm and Mons. Diego Monroy, abbot of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the firm Viotran was given authorization to print the venerated icon in various objects, such as posters, key rings, phone cards and lighters.

According to the catholic tradition, Our Lady of Guadalupe, a dark-skinned Virgin, appeared to the native Juan Diego, now a saint, in the mountain of Tepeyac in 1531, a place in the northern part of Mexico City. The visions of St. Juan Diego about Our Lady of Guadalupe, were the key of the massive conversion of the Natives to the religion of their European conquerors.

The magazine's report, detailed that the profit of the commercial exploitation of the Virgin of Guadalupe will be divided in equal parts between Viotran and the Basilica, the most important catholic sanctuary in the world after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. A source within the Archbishophric of Mexico who asked to remain anonimous told Reuters, "Mgr. Diego Monroy talked about the contract he had signed with a money-delivering enterprise, but now I don't have the information".

By the meaning of the contract, Viotran also got the marketing rights of the image of the Native Juan Diego and the pictures of the last visit of Pope John Paul II, in which the Pontiff himself, canonized Juan Diego.

Last year, Mexican inmigrants who work in the United States sent 9.200 million dollars to their famillies in M+¬xico. The number of banks and money-delivering enterprises fighting for a possition in this meaty buisiness, which is one of the most important sources of income for the Mexican economy, after oil industry and tourism, increases everyday.

This proves the respect the new-church has towards spiritual matters and now they have sold the faith in the ridiculous quantity of 12.5 milion dollars (this time they weren't silver coins Wink). I guess that Mike Jordan earns this in a single match but who knows Wink

Now I wonder if they'll persecute those poor craftmen who depict the icon and sell it in order to support their poor famillies.

By the way, who says that the new-church isn't the vanguard of secular humanism?

Remie, what do you mean by "the new-church"? I've never heard that term used until you wrote this.

Hey Nik let's make an Our Lady of Guadalupe icon key chain on the store and see if those losers sue us over a religious image!

I've seen an AP report released after the initial Reuters report saying that the Basilica denies having sold the rights to the image, although "they considered the idea".  So I guess we wouldn't get in trouble.

"...you could not bear, Master, in the compassion of your mercy to watch the human race being tyrannised by the devil, but you came and saved us. We acknowledge your grace, we proclaim your mercy, we do not conceal your benevolence..."
