Triangle Trinity Nonsense
« on: September 01, 2015, 05:13:01 PM »
Does anyone know when exactly the imagery of the triangle was first used to describe the Trinity in the West? Thank you...

I don't think anyone knows EXACTLY when.  It's got an ancient pedigree going back probably to the early Middle Ages.  Are you trying to win a bet with someone?

An hour of searching and I came up with zilch, except 1) the Catholic encyclopedia referencing a 15th century (I think it was) western theologian, but without a helpful earlier reference; and 2) that a ton of Protestants think Trinity = triangle = Babylonian symbol = omg u gaiz it's the whore of Babylon ringing the dinner triangle thing to gobble us up and swallow our souls whole so our empty husk bodies become Roman slaves and kiss the stinky feet of the evil wicked pope. Anyway, I checked all the fathers that are on sites like CCEL (main list, though I didn't check the later additions), New Advent, etc., and didn't see any mention of Triangle, Triangular, etc. except in sporadic discussions of other matters.

There is this by John of Wallingford in the mid 13th century.

Here's a good video on the Trinity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQLfgaUoQCw
"For, by its immensity, the divine substance surpasses every form that our intellect reaches. Thus we are unable to apprehend it by knowing what it is. Yet we are able to have some knowledge of it by knowing what it is not." - St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa contra gentiles, I, 14.
