Both parents unwell
« on: June 29, 2015, 05:39:58 PM »
Please could you remember my parents in your prayers. Dad is 69, waiting for a routine op for a non-serious but not pleasant condition, and has also been getting rather confused / memory problems, very gradually getting worse over the last several months. Mum is 70, and worries about Dad. Then this last week she got rushed into hospital in the middle of the night with severe epigastric pain. Turned out heart is OK, which was the first concern, but possible gallstones, and other digestive problems. Discharged from hospital after a couple of days, to have further tests as an outpatient, then today out of nowhere she fainted, and banged her head as she fell. Paramedic came and checked her out and gave her the all clear (IMO it's a combination of stress, fatigue from not being able to sleep, the heat, and not eating enough) but she's feeling pretty rotten. I can listen on the phone and be supportive that way, but I live too far away to offer any practical help, and with Ali's health being what it is and my own low energy levels, it's tricky to go and visit them. Thanks.

Thank you to everyone for your prayers. Things seem to have settled down somewhat. No more falls or emergencies, and an issue with the neighbours that was really stressing out my parents seems to have been resolved ok. It's a case now of waiting for the scan for my mum to see what is going on, and waiting for my dad's op which is due next month.

Lord, have mercy!

While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too
Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl
Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl

Thank you all for your prayers. Mum coped well with her MRI scan today, and seemed considerably less stressed when I spoke to her this evening. We just have to wait for the results now. She had her gall bladder removed years ago, but the suspicion is gallstones in her bile duct, so hopefully if that is the case the MRI will confirm it.

A couple of updates:

First, some good news about my dad. He had his op about 3 weeks ago. It needed to be a bit more extensive than first anticipated, and the doctors weren't sure how successful it had been. But he had some follow up tests yesterday, and everything was fine. That means it should be all over, and he is very relieved.

On to my mum, and after an MRI which didn't show anything conclusive, she had to have a endoscopic ultrasound examination. She got the results on Friday, and they have found a blockage in her bile duct, which was "grossly dilated". It doesn't sound like cancer, more like a stone. She has been scheduled for urgent surgery, happening tomorrow subject to blood test checks being OK. It will be endoscopic surgery (amazing what they can do these days), and she's pretty stressed about it, especially after they explained the procedure, and all the possible risks, to her yesterday. I must admit I wouldn't fancy it. The fact that she has been called in for urgent surgery was also worrying her, though we talked it through and it sounds like it is urgent in the sense of high priority rather than urgent in the sense of medical emergency. Any prayers would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you everyone for the prayers. Mum is back home after the op, which didn't go quite as expected. They couldn't find any blockage in the bile duct, despite it being there when the ultrasound was done a week or so ago. The medics think her body has somehow manage to pass the stone out naturally. She had been in more pain than usual this last week, which apparently would be consistent with that. The next step is a follow up with her consultant. Not sure things are over yet, but pleased that she is through the op safely.

Had a call from my dad today to say mum was in such severe pain in the night that he had to call the emergency services. The paramedic who came out managed to get her comfortable with hefty painkillers, and stayed some time until he was satisfied things had settled, at least for the moment. She's not so bad today physically but "subdued" as my dad put it - which knowing my dad means thoroughly miserable.  :(
