From Anastasios re: Forum Upgrades
« on: February 11, 2015, 01:25:22 PM »
Our fearless Founder and Webdespota posted the following in the Facebook Group about an hour ago:

Folks, since it would have taken me longer to figure out what got corrupted a few days ago that disabled moderators from doing their jobs, instead, I am going to do the long-awaited upgrade to new forum software which will fix the recurring Friday night shutdown. Please bear with me--I am doing this on the side between full-time and part-time jobs and babysitting kids. I have had two kind offers of help, but honestly, it would take more time to show the problem at this stage. I will follow up with the volunteers later in terms of long-term support. Thank you.

Hey everyone, we're back. Some of the extra add-ons such as stars and tags are not functional as I try to find replacements in the 2.x version of software we run for the forum. Also, the template needs to be fixed. I'll be doing that incrementally.

Thanks to Fr. George for helping me test out some stuff.

In Christ,

Weren't some posts most recent to the upgraded deleted or is it only my impression?

Some of the extra add-ons such as stars

We have squares. squares are fine.

edit:

Posts seem to be ok, though.

Congratulations on getting through a difficult migration.  I strongly suggest the use of separate development and production environments for doing upgrades so you can avoid this kind of outage in the future.  If you run the site on two virtual servers in the cloud or on two VMs Ina dedicated server, or even two directories on the same server,,and automate the process of changing URLs throughout the software or use /etc/hosts and a second IP address to access the testing environment, you can make sure the upgrade works and doesn't cause havoc effort switching over to it, either by dumping the database and loading it into the staging VM or, after running a backup,,running the sa,e scripted upgrade on the production environment during scheduled downtime, like Clean Monday.

Also, using git or another version control program to manage configuration files,s o you can rollback all of /etc, /usr/etc and even the directory where the forum software is located if breakage occurs is very useful.  Or if you have ZFS or btrfs you can easily take snapshots and backup your entire server with no performance hit.

wgw, I thank you for your suggestions. They are all good, and things I would love to implement, but my issue is time. I have been overtaxed since 2012 (3 years already? ugh) and as such only am able to do break/fix operations. I would love to assemble a technical team, but all attempts heretofore have resulted in nothing. Would you like to join a revived technical team for the site?

Shameless plug: if you appreciate the work done on the site, please buy my book here: http://www.anastasioshudson.com/publications/new-book-metropolitan-petros-of-astoria/

If it doesn't interest you, you can always click the donate button here: https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_flow&SESSION=WokFampDOpry2J4cx1vL3vRlaXJzMkoaNwhxyHaoyt6yji3G25-kWulw3B8&dispatch=5885d80a13c0db1f8e263663d3faee8da8649a435e198e44a05ba053bc68d12e

Donations that went to the former Treasury plugin only support forum maintenance costs, and I did not take a penny from that, ever. However, I do have expenses and needs, and would appreciate any support possible personally. I've always stayed away from putting ads on the site (even though I could probably generate $500/month) because it's annoying, and because I would also feel obliged to share with the moderators since they are the ones providing the most hours of service to this site. This is the only time I plan to advertise a personal appeal.

I love you all (really, I do--if I didn't, why would I have dedicated 13 years to this project?!) and I want to keep this site going forever.

In Christ,

I would be honored to help; in fact I sent you and Fr. Nebjosa Pantic emails last week with all my contact details.  If you didn't get them due to the maintenance perhaps I should send you a private message or resend?  You know my email address via your administrator account of course so you might check in your Yahoo mailbox for an email from it.   I'm available as a volunteer,,and my areas of expertise and the information I would need to help you are outlined in the emails Imsent you and Fr. Pantic.

The PayPal link does not work! Since I recently found out about the Old/New Calendar deal-e-o, I await your book and will be happy to give it to a priest who turned me onto the issues involved. Thank you.

BUT, is it to early to complain? No?

I can't seem to find any of my sent PMs, as there doesn't seem to be an 'Outbox' on this new system.

I'm still finding my way around the new layout, but I like it a lot better than the old version of OC.net. It just looks cleaner to me. Thank you once again!

I can't seem to find any of my sent PMs, as there doesn't seem to be an 'Outbox' on this new system.
Is anyone experiencing the same problem?

It is called "sent messages" under the "my messages" tab when you move your pointer over it.

I click the My Messages tab and all I get as an option is "Read your messages". There is no option that says "Sent messages".

Once you're on your messages page, you get another three tabs at the top (Messages - Actions - Preferences). Clicking on Messages will open a submenu and you can choose to view your outbox or compose a new message.

I clicked on the Messages tab, selected Outbox, and got this message:

(I guess that's a part of my new "rank".)

Personally, I think only one post from each topic should be in the recent posts list at the bottom. Right now, if there is a popular post, it tends to crowd out the other threads on the list since it takes up multiple spots.

You could expand on that in the Custom Title field, which accepts a lot of characters.

There is this in each profile: "Show Posts"

Before we had the option to view all posts by a user, which still exists, and to view all topics started. So we could see what threads someone started, not only what they posted.

Also, can we upload tho the site directly, or simply use photo bucket and the like as before?

Frankly, I am glad that the "Show Threads by Poster" is not operational. There is too much risk of stalking.

I wish the option to "Show Posts by Poster" could be rendered inoperable, or at least give each member the option to not display his/her posts to other members by making that a profile option.

Four steps to an enjoyable Pennsylvania evening:

Step 1: stalking
Step 2: husking
Step 3: corning*
Step 4: hooting, hollering, and running to the next street

OC.netters are confused about the definitions of many words (i.e. stalking, persecution, harassment)
It's common knowledge that you secretly want to be born in early 17th century Russia.  As a serf or a royal, I know not.  Chances are serf.

Does anyone here even know what stalking is?

OC.netters are confused about the definitions of many words (i.e. stalking, persecution, harassment)

now that's better right?

Or am I the only One?

Problem: I just got a WARNING but it was from the generic ORTHODOX FORUM and not the Moderator,  so when I tried to respond there was "nobody" in the TO: column. I just wanted to respond but....but.....but....nobody was home!  :'(
I'll get over it rather quickly, but just wanted to practice my complaining; now if I can practice my daily prayers I will be far closer to Heaven, except you Admin folks may not know about this minor issue, or is it a feature for SysAdmins?

I think being watched is scarier than being warned. I'm not sure why, maybe the impression it gives that the mods are watching you extra closely.

And you get a 10% warning level too, check your profile, Len.

My 2% is shown in my profile. I have no idea if it will go away. You'd have to ask a mod, I guess.

I can see other people's percentages. Not sure if it's supposed to be that way or not, but it doesn't matter either way, I guess (unless someone were to have a really high percentage).

I guess if you reach 100% you're banned?

Why are you worried about what percentage you have vs what percentage others have?

Well, now I AM worried. Nana saw my 10% and I cannot!

Because someone said that he saw a person with 2% who was banned. I'm not sure how bans work with this new system, so I wasn't sure if you could be banned if you had as little as 2%. I know I've broken the rules quite a bit here, so I didn't know if I too would be banned.

And NanaDeborah and Len, I can see my own warning in my profile.

We don't ban people out of the blue.  If someone is going to be banned, s/he'll have more than a clue about it in advance.  The best way to avoid all that is not to do stuff that is ban-worthy.

OC without rules? That is anarchy.

Verified. I clicked the link to the rules.

Here it is: http://www.orthodoxchristianity.net/forum/index.php?action=rules

Yes, no rules.

Technically, that means all warnings could be appealed as there are no rules to justify a warning.

Oh, dear, what will the mods do now?

It wouldn't hurt if mods explained new warning system because no one seems to understand it. Unless, of course, mods do not understand it either.

Re: Forum Upgrades

A request for clarification

Since warnings are no longer posted publicly with a green, yellow, orange, or red meatball, would it be possible for mods to EDIT the offending posts and include the admonition?

Or could a mod post a copy of the offending post, along with the admonition.

Several mods have posted that they have administered warnings, but none were visible, leaving us clueless.

With no rules published on this website, how is a person, especially a newbie on this site to know if rules have been changed or violated?

I usually read those moderator admonitions so as to avoid receiving one myself. Without any clue, I wonder  why people have been placed on 1%, 2%, 3%, 20%, 27% and 28% warning status and just what  Watched mean.

Furthermore, if a post has resulted in a warning, then it would be good for us to know so that we will not respond to it and possibly incur a warning ourselves.

Also, wouldn't a public warned post generate less reports than one that does not have a warning?

Since I have used the Report button to nominate a few posts for Post of the Month, I now wonder if those posts might have been reported for a violation.

Maria,

I'll leave the rest of your comments to others but when you report a POM it does come across the same way as violations do, but we can see your note that you intend it as a POM nomination.  There may be a better way to work this but the present system doesn't result in anyone getting a warning, at least.

I noticed, too, that the rules went missing so I will bring this up with the moderators' team.

Gah, no more public executions, no more throwing of tomatoes! The mods don't care about our small amusements anymore. I'm very disappointed in them. It's time for a revolution; involving, of course, very public punishments. Let's bring back the good old days. Bring forth the guillotines.

Out of curiosity, was this site loading unusually slowly for anyone earlier this morning? Last night around midnight I had times when the server would stop responding when I tried to load a page, and the site kept on being very slow until around noon. I was wondering if anyone else had had this problem and what might have caused it.

It's fine now, but I hope it doesn't happen again.

But I went to go look for all that stuff about banning, with negative results. Where is it now? Or is the upgrade have a bit-bucket for rules and complaint departments?

OC without rules? That is anarchy.

Verified. I clicked the link to the rules.

Here it is: http://www.orthodoxchristianity.net/forum/index.php?action=rules

Yes, no rules.

Oh, dear, what will the mods do now?

It seems as if they've been implementing a play from Animal Farm.  Those pesky pigs changed the rules to suit themselves.

How do you turn the coding doodads off in posts (or for part of a post)? For example, if I want to post [ o ] with the spaces removed, but without getting this:

I didn't see the questions re: warning and banning before tonight...

The new SMF software handles warnings by percentages.  When a mod issues a warning, they put in the reason, and then assign a percentage to the infraction.  The level of warning is based on the cumulative percentage.  Your warning percentage will decrease by 1% per day.  While the warning is triggered by an action in a post, the warning itself is not tied to the post, and that's why we don't have the old system of the automatic in-post dot with warning message - the warnings in the old system were linked to both post and user, and in the new system are only linked to the user.

When your warning percentage reaches 5%, you are "Watched" (which is a replacement for "Warned").  At 25% you are on Post Moderation.  At 50% you are Muted.  (Banning is handled independently of the warning system.)

This newer warning system's operation renders the outcomes quite differently than the last one.  Before, if one was put on 61 day Muting, they would automatically then be on Post Moderation for 61 days at the conclusion of the muting, and then 61 days of warning after that.  So a 61-day infraction could lead to 183 days "in the system."  This was especially long at the maximum level (99 day Muting would leave someone in the warning system for 297 days - a week short of 10 months total).  Under the new system you can only be warned up to 100%, and that will automatically decrease by 1 per day, so the maximum time "in the system" for one infraction is 100 days.

With that Penalty Box restriction, you might have to PM a mod as changing to DST must be done through the profile.

While the warning is triggered by an action in a post, the warning itself is not tied to the post, and that's why we don't have the old system of the automatic in-post dot with warning message - the warnings in the old system were linked to both post and user, and in the new system are only linked to the user.

So, if I understand you correctly, Father, you can no longer click on the user's name and find the post where the infraction occurred?  If so, I like this way a whole lot better.
