interesting list...
« on: June 03, 2005, 04:49:20 PM »
i got this from a friend, who in turn got it somewhere on the internet...food for thought...

1. You can't be anything you want to be. Not even if you work hard and put your mind to it. You can be what God made you to be.

2. Perception is not reality. Image is not reality. Reality is reality.

3. You do not deserve a break, a new car, a new house, a massage, a bubble bath, or a vacation. If you are humble, you might deserve the opportunity to do penance. Be thankful for what you have and don't expect more.

4. You are not here for yourself, except to save your own soul. You are here for God and for those he gave you to love.

5. You can't always get what you want, and it's a good thing too. The things you want - some of them, anyway- are probably bad for you.

6. If you want a friend, be a friend to the friendless.

7. Don't go to church expecting to "get something out of it". Go to church to give God the best you have.

8. Most people will let you down at some point. Even the best people. Be prepared.

9. Many people will dislike you for reasons you don't understand. Get used to it, and don't worry about it.

10. Never do anything in secret that you wouldn't want the world to see on the front page of the newspaper in the morning. (Courtesy of Thomas Jefferson.)

11. Love your enemies, for they tell you your faults. (Courtesy of Ben Franklin)

12. The things of God are the only things that really matter.

In Christ,
Donna Mary

Good list...

Seems to be overlooking that God loves man and gave him all things richly to enjoy.

Well all the advice seems to be combating pride, vanity, delusion, or self-love; there's nothing wrong with that, right?  :)
I agree that all good things come from God, and of course Christ said He came to give us abundant life, but in Him, not in anything else.  This list combats the "anything else" that we so often and easily chase after.  Or so it seems to me, anyway!

I like it. It is fun to see stuff that was written years ago.
The term planet earth is an innovation which has arisen in recent centuries with the error of heliocentrism.

If one wants to confess a pure doctrine of Orthodoxy, they should be careful not to refer to the earth as a planet, unlike the current Pope as well as Patriarch Kirill and Patriarch Bartholomew, who regularly speak in error when they refer to our planet earth.

I've never even considered that as a possibility. I view it as nostalgia.  :)

But it falls on the unlucky number 13! Is this some sort of nefarious plot to wreak havoc on the list? Dum Dum Dum...

So you think I resurrected this thread to annoy someone (biro?), or just in general to be annoying? Do I have that right?

1. True.
2. True, but with a caveat that we cannot know what "the real" is, reality manifests itself in a number of perceptible ways but the real as an ontological essence we cannot know or comprehend.
3. Nobody deserves anything whatsoever, agreed.
9. Not everyone is going to like you, what a shocker.

The rest I'm kind of unsure or indifferent about commenting on.

1. Yes and no. Depends on what one means.
2. Yes. But not one single human being knows what reality is.
3. Agree. But the opposite shouldn't be used as an opportunity to oppress.
4. What does it mean to be here to save ones soul? Sounds like those Words can easily be missdirected We are here to love and to create, which is the way to gloryfy God, as bearers of God's image.
5. I guess that is true.
6. Yes.
7. Yes.
And yes to the rest as well, with the caution that it is important not to humiliate man.

Then let me set your mind at ease, in this particular case anyway. I resurrected this one not just because I liked the list, but also because it contains points that I think need to be repeatedly emphasised, since the culture I live in insists on harmfully giving the opposite advice to people from the time they're toddlers on ("you can achieve anything you want!" etc.)

I like all of Asterikos' posts. They are generally congenial, inoffensive, and useful. The forum could use more of his type posts, even if it is rezzing old threads.

Hey if people can get resurrected, so can threads. :)

That'll happen only once, at the end of time, and of all the feelings I'll have at that time, annoyance won't be one of them.  It's more likely to be gnashing of teeth.

So much wrong with this list, and I've already implicated the general tone earlier in the thread, altho much more could be said about the overall outlook and how mistaken it is. However, at present, this item is bugging me:

"4. You are not here for yourself, except to save your own soul. You are here for God and for those he gave you to love."

If I am here for my salvation, then I am here for myself. Salvation is of the whole man and his living, here and beyond. A person is not distinguishable from a soul. God is indeed here for you, as he created you in order to be your Father and Savior and future companion. We are to love all men -- and all men are to love us.

"You are not here for your whims, but for your salvation; and not of yourself alone, but of all mankind and especially those to whom you have a duty or who have a duty to you. Love is of God and surrounds you, and is meant for good will among men."

It is not actually clever to create dichotomies and abstractions -- it is the opposite of clever and it's harmful -- but that is common fruit of the modern school of thinking.
"Love ... is an abyss of illumination, a mountain of fire ... . It is the condition of angels, the progress of eternity" (Climacus).
