Keep in mind that many people in the OT were described as "blameless in the Lord's sight". Athanasius calling Mary "pure and unstained" could be interpreted in a similar manner.

The later quotes seem to imply that Mary was purified and made sinless, by grace, which is different than being by nature without sin. Socrates58 is a Roman Catholic so he would tend to read "Immaculate Conception" ideas into patristic quotes even if they aren't really there.
Sorry. I was going to do more delving and expand on that link, but I ended up getting sick and going home for the day.  I'm chilling at home now, sick as a dog. Ugh.
