Pregnant student defies graduation ban
MONTGOMERY, Alabama (AP) -- A pregnant student who was banned from graduation at her Roman Catholic high school announced her own name and walked across the stage anyway at the close of the program.
Alysha Cosby's decision prompted cheers and applause Tuesday from many of her fellow seniors at St. Jude Educational Institute.
But her mother and aunt were escorted out of the church by police after Cosby headed back to her seat.
"I can't believe something like this is happening in 2005," said her mother, Sheila Cosby. "My daughter has been through a lot and I am proud of her. She deserved to walk, and she did."
The school's guidance counselor delivered Cosby's degree to her house earlier Tuesday, but she still wanted to participate.
"I worked hard throughout high school and I wanted to walk with my class," she said.
Cosby was told in March that she could no longer attend school because of safety concerns, and her name was not listed in the graduation program.
The father of Cosby's child, also a senior at the school, was allowed to participate in graduation.

What hypocrisy to allow the boy responsible for this to participate - but not this girl!

Wow, that's just stupid, even more so than Cardinal Keeler's decision to not attend Loyola College of Maryland's graduation because Giulianni is speaking.
Now, Loyola isn't my favorite place, as its populated by the most heterodox of Jesuits around. But the good Cardinal is refusing to show up (or allow any auxilliary bishops to show up) because of Rudy's support of abortion, even though he is not talking about abortion. The powers-that-be at Loyola asked Guillianni to speak because this is the class that were freshman when 9/11 happened, a mere two weeks after they arrived. I think it's a good choice, considering. I see where Keeler is coming from, but this is such overkill.
Much like allowing the father of the child to participate, but not the mother.

Ironic isn't it? If she'd had an abortion without anyone knowing, she would have been allowed to participate.

Excellent point. I bet there were a number of girls at the graduation secretly cringing because they simply got rid of the "evidcence."

I agree with everyone. It is pretty sad this girl had to resort to this act of protest, when she could have just as easily aborted the child (God forbid!!!). They were punishing her for taking responsibility for her irresponsible actions and carrying the child to term rather than chucking him like many other teens would. I also think it is chauvenistic and wrong that daddy got to walk the stage free-and-clear. If she had to force her way across the stage, he should've had to too. Just my thoughts.
