I'm not an Atheist or Agnostic. I'm facing very bad times, and I question what the future may hide for me, I'm actually scared, and above all, my faith is in crises.

But I wonder, how Atheists, Agnostics and non-believers or non-spirituals deal with such times ? If you were in the past one of the above, how did you deal with bad times before becoming Christian ?

I do deal with bad days badly and I'm not an Atheist or Agnostic.

For believers, when they face bad times, times that seem to be really bad, usually they believe that God has a plan for them, or that all these bad times/situations will work for good. But for an Atheist, Agnostic or non-spiritual person, it might be hard to rely on a belief that there s some sort of a plan or that this bad time will not be the one that will break him/her. So how do you deal with that ?

For me personally, the time before I became a Christian was at times very black. I tried to find other things to focus on - mainly music, though because of the stuff I listened to then, it only made things worse. Focusing on death is poisonous for the soul. That was all well over 20 years ago now, when I was a teenager. Christ called me when I was 19, and I don't tend to look back to those days. Why would I want to? Whatever way non-Christians find to get through tough times, there is no comparison to the hope we have in Christ.

I somehow envy you.

I'm as I said not an Atheist or Agnostic. But my faith is in a deep crisis that I feel it is not there anymore. even though I still don't want to lose it I'm going through very bad time. I'm trying to focus on my study in hope that it will prevent me from thinking about the issue. But I'm in the dark, so in the dark. I don't have that hope that I used to have when I was facing bad times. Now I'm just lost there not knowing what to do, scared actually, and day after day I'm getting worse. That NEVER happened to me when I had that strong faith in Christ. Some might say it was wishful thinking, but it wasn't actually, for me it was a knowledge that God has given us, a faith in a promise given to me by Christ. That He will be with us no matter what.  But now, I don't know what to do. And that is why I asked this question, and oh, your answer and what you said in is exactly what I used to face before becoming Christians. I used to think a lot about death, and I mean a lot. I used to listen to sad music, sad videos and needless to say I used to watch a lot of porn just to get me through and it was very dark times that I never thought I will go back to, but it seems like I'm in my way there.

The same thing most believers do: find distractions.

You generally seek advice from good friends or people you are close to.  Seek advice from those who have experience dealing with similar issues.  Some will read philosophy, look for academic answers which is based on secular humanism, or spend a lot of time in the "self-help" section at the bookstore.  They may seek counseling......or result to prescription drugs for solutions with anxiety or depression issues.  There are broad ways man tries to find solutions to their problems.  Some ways are better than others, but they are still merely a tourniquet compared to when one finds rest in Christ and counsel in the Body.

You know, you don't have to go back to those things. The pull may be strong, and at times appear to be irresistible, but that is a lie that comes from the tempter. You really don't have to go back to those things.

Praying for you, Raylight.

It really depends on the type of bad day we're talking about. As lovesupreme says, distractions can play a part, but I try not to go down that road until I've actually tried to do something to correct the problem (if there is anything to be done) and have given myself some time to actually feel the way I feel about the situation and tried to rectify it by putting some sort of perspective on it.

Questioning the future can be tough. I'm a bit of a pessimist, so I usually will have a couple worst-case scenarios in mind, but things almost always turn out better than I expect, which allows for some hope. So, having some mental preparation for the worst while simultaneously knowing that it's probably not going to be as bad as all that generally doesn't cause me stress.

Fear really depends on what I'm afraid of. Fear can be a good motivator to take steps to avoid or prevent whatever you're afraid of, and if you're able to do that, it can help alleviate the fear. And once I'm at the point where there is no longer anything I can really do, the fear doesn't tend to linger.

And as far as crises of faith go, well, that's not a problem for me anymore.
