Who will be the first to play in a NFL game?
« on: September 09, 2014, 10:15:38 PM »
Michael Sam - first openly gay player drafted in the NFL draft - currently on the Dallas Cowboys practice squad....

OR

Ray Rice - suspended indefinitely by the NFL after video surfaced of a drunk Ray Rice slapping his drunk then-fiancee in the elevator of a now bankrupt Atlantic City casino....

Hopefully Ray Rice since he is actually a good enough ballplayer to play in the NFL.
God bless!

I'll bet they both play a game before Tim Tebow plays again.

Same question as the OP - between Tim Tebow and Johnny Football?

Johnny Football will definitely get some playing time, but I am picking him to be the next Ryan Leaf and wash out within 2-3 years.

Johnny is too rich to be a Leaf.

P.S. "Ryan Leaf, left, was nearly taken ahead of Peyton Manning by the Colts in the 1998 draft."

One of these days some budget cable channel should do a made-for-TV movie about the life of Leaf, with a corny title like:

Shake Like A Leaf: The Ryan Leaf Story

And speaking of the devil, this is from just a couple days ago:

Ryan Leaf violated probation terms

Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf has been sentenced to five years in prison in Texas for violating terms of his probation.

A Texas prosecutor says the former San Diego Chargers quarterback and Washington State standout won't have to serve any time behind bars in Texas because of time he's served in Montana...

... When I read the title, I guess Solex pronounces NFL "niffle."

Michael Vick was punished more harshly for dog fighting and lying to the government about dog fighting activities.  Does Rice deserve equal punishment even though his judicial outcome was a mere slap on the wrist?

Based on what they're saying here in Jersey, according to our laws as they stand now, the prosecutors don't think he'd do any time if they pressed charges, even though with the video, they don't need his now wife's testimony.  The prosecutor said his choice was between pursuing a P.T.I. (pretrial intervention) and pressing for a conviction and getting him probation.  This being the case, he opted for the P.T.I. so as to spare the victim further public humiliation (good luck with that).  He said if the choice was between the P.T.I. and 5 years in prison, he'd have pursued the charge even without her testimony, but since it wasn't...other NJ lawyers have publically disagreed, but that was the prosecutor's assessment.  A local senator (Sweeney) is pushing to use this as an opportunity to toughen domestic violence laws in NJ saying, "If what we saw on the video gets you probation, what do you have to do to get more than a slap on the wrist?  Beat your spouse to death?".  It basically looks like dude is gonna get away scot free.  In terms of the NFL, it's being debated now who saw the tape and when, who deliberately avoided seeing it, et cetera, right up to the commissioner.  Truthfully, dude is lucky he's escaping criminal charges.  I don't think the NFL will look too good if it lets him play again, but hey, Chris Brown still has a career, so what do I know?

This Time op-ed is worth the time to read. "Robin Givens on Domestic Violence: ‘Why I Stayed’ " (Givens is the ex-wife of Mike Tyson, former heavyweight boxer) This part is relevent here regarding the camera remark made above in the thread:

"But if there’s video, you can’t unsee it. It is so deep to actually see what happens to women. And we will see it now because there are cameras everywhere. I remember being dragged down a hallway in a hotel in the Bahamas on a night I thought I was really going to die. Today there would have been cameras in that hall. Someone would know. I would be believed. Now the story gets to tell itself.
Today we are in world where we are far more connected and involved in each other’s lives thanks to social media. Women who are abused can see they’re not alone. I only left my marriage when I felt like I was going to die physically or die emotionally. It’s just amazing what becomes your normal. One day you wake up with a knife at your throat. Another day, your shoes are all torn up. But I did leave and I didn’t take one dime from my husband. I left my house, and I even left my underwear. I just wanted my life. I was very confident that I could make my way on my own. And I did" http://time.com/3319512/ray-rice-nfl-video-robin-givens-domestic-violence/

It's tough to defend Mr. Rice, his immediate employer the Baltimore football team or the league for any of their initial actions and decisions in this matter.

Do you mean for me or for America in general?  I'm a big believer in second chances - and very conscious of my own sins and need for forgiveness - so I'd like to think that as much of a struggle as it would be for me that I could entertain the idea of giving them a second chance to live their lives in peace if they truly repented.  For America though, I don't know.  For some people, it's over as soon as Chris releases a hit single or Rice makes a stellar play, but for others, it'll stick in their craw forever.

If there were cameras inside Ray Lewis' limo and hucksters like TMZ back in 2000, his career might have turned out vastly different than today.

In 3 years, he will be enshrined with OJ in Canton.

People have short attention spans.  The Ravens have cut their losses and moved on; however, the same sentiment doesn't exist in the other 31 NFL teams that may sign Rice.  The NFL is a $10 Billion business not a marriage counseling service....

No, punish them accordingly and not coddle them like the Ravens, the NFL and the Atlantic City courthouse did with Rice.

Brown has been on probation for 5+ years and he's broken the law many times while on probation; yet, he keeps getting chance after chance - being coddled because he's a star.

If it was I, the House of Ruth would hang me from a tree and stamp domestic abuser on my forehead.  I'd be finished, toast....

See the disparity?
