What are the best commentaries on scripture from before the schism in 1054?

Obviously there's St. John Chrysostom, but what else is out there?
All along the watchtower, princes kept the view
While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too
Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl
Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl

This may be too late, but it is so close I have to mention the Blessed Theophylact of Ochrid, "Blessed Theophylactus of Ochrid (ca. 1050/60-ca. 1108)":  http://orthodoxwiki.org/Theophylact_of_Ochrid

Thank you. I've seen his works before at our parish book store. I'll be sure to check them out sometime.

There is nothing like St. John Chrysostom in the history of the Church.  This is thanks to St. [anonymous] who wrote down every single word.  Truth be told, nearly the whole of Patristic writings, the whole of the canons, and the dogmatic horoi of the councils are all commentaries on Scripture.  However, you may enjoy, for example, the homilies of St. Gregory Palamas, with translations such as that of Prof. C. Veniamin.  The reason why Dr. Veniamin decided to translate the homilies was because "St. Gregory's homilies contain the whole of Orthodoxy" within them.  While certainly centuries after the schism, you will see why I recommend them once you have read them.

Thank you Father H. For my purposes I was looking for commentaries on specific books, but personally I will check out St. Gregory Palamas's homilies.
