Driving Tesla Model S across country
« on: June 15, 2014, 01:00:03 AM »
The editors of Edmunds.com are driving their all-electric Tesla Model S long-term car from LA to NY with a goal of making the trip in 69 hours even though they have to stop at least 24 times to recharge the car.  Follow their progress here.

The Tesla spent 14.7 hours charging at 120 kwh superchargers.  Using a national electricity cost of 12 cents per kw, the electricity cost of driving cross country was $211.68 even though the Tesla superchargers are free....

By the end of 2015, Tesla expects to have superchargers across the country.  Now that Tesla has made their technology open source, other people can come up with Tesla superchargers and other things Tesla....

I would rather drive a compact car with economy gas mileage

I also like large SUV.

Diesel - the VW Jetta TDI (Turbo Diesel Injected) gets 43 MPG (miles per gallon) on the highway.  Diesel costs $4 per gallon and a 3,331 mile trip would cost $309.86.

Best a SUV will do on the highway is 20 miles per gallon.

Actually, the Edmunds.com folks are driving a loaded Tesla S whose price tag is over $100K (I don't know if they qualify for tax breaks associated with an electric vehicle).  They had it appraised at CarMax and CarMax was offering $79,000, before Edmunds.com drove it across the country and back.

Unless there's more than the standard $7500 tax break, it's still not worth it for the average consumer.

The Tesla S has a 265 mile range - more than 3X the Nissan Leaf or Chevy Volt.  If one has a 240V. 40A plug, one can fully charge the Tesla in a day.

BMW is coming out with its i3 and i8 electric cars because Tesla is affecting the high end luxury car market.
