It's best if you find a class. If that's out of the question, you might want to start here.

Voila, la meilleure façon pour apprendre à parler le français.

Pourquoi veut tu apprendre le français? Les Americains, pour la plupart des personnes, ne veulent pas parler en français.

So I'm not lost & illiterate in a French-speaking country.

Naturellement. Tu as l'intention d'aller en France, Quebec ou Françafrique?

Acadiane? L'automobile?

Any tips? I've decided to learn French. Anyone know any interesting European news media in French, or movies, or perhaps some North African media in French since I know that Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco still hold onto their colonial heritage.

I would enjoy interesting content suggestions.

Two news sources I read regularly:
http://www.lefigaro.fr/

http://www.lemonde.fr/

And for Morocco, that I read every once in a while:

http://www.yabiladi.com/

As far as movies, just Google french movies and there are some on youtube that you could find.  If you happen to have Netflix, they have quite a few French movies.

Check to see if your cable provider carries the French language channel TV5 Monde.  Other free resources on the Internet are:
https://www.duolingo.com For grammer practice
http://www.memrise.com  For vocabulary memorization
https://www.youtube.com/user/frenchsounds  Youtube channel on French pronunciation
https://www.youtube.com/user/imagiers  Youtube channel with hundreds of French language lessons

Both RFI and Radio Canada carry streaming media in French.

Do NOT buy Rosetta Stone.  It is overpriced and you can duplicate it on the Internet for free.  Do buy a basic French text book such as French Demystified or Easy French Step-by-Step.  Both are available from Amazon.

bonne chance,
Tomás

There's a lesson series called Teach Yourself which is sometimes available in public libraries. Pimsleur also makes a good series.

Borrow the Pimsleur CD's from your library and copy the mp3's to your computer.

I am well aware of the corporate scam of Rosetta Stone.

Hello there, I was interested in a basic review of Airport French but since then lost track of learning French as a secondary language.
