Icon translation
« on: May 06, 2014, 03:39:11 PM »
Anyone know what this icon says? It looks Russian. I think I see a "Christ" on the first line; then a "psyche" ("soul") and "zooan" ("life") on the second line.

It's all Greek to me.

Yes, it is Greek. So it's wrong place.

Ah, and most of Slavic icons have titles and descriptions written in Church Slavonic, not Russian

Hi Jetavan,

It's Greek, the beginning of Homily 7 (on the Hexaemeron) by St. Basil the Great (The creation of moving creatures):
(Καὶ εἶπεν ὁ Θεὸς) ἐξαγαγέτω τὰ ὕδατα ἑρπετὰ ψυχῶν ζωσῶν καὶ πετεινὰ πετόμενα

(And God said) Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly

In an icon I recently purchased, St. Sergius of Radonezh is holding this:

Would anyone translate?
Happy shall he be, that shall take and dash thy little ones against the rock. Alleluia.

Once Christ has filled the Cross, it can never be empty again.

"Lord, look down from Heaven upon this place, and visit it with Your mercy."

It's from his Life, when he blessed a monastery newly-established by St. Alexius of Moscow, later to be called the Andronikov Monastery after its first hegumen, St. Sergius' disciple St. Andronik.

"Lord, look at this place from Heaven and fill it with Your mercy"

It's probably a quote from somewhere but I cannot find the reference.

It's similar to one of the verses of the psalm 79 that's also used in the pontifical Liturgy. But maybe the exact quotation is from a different psalm?...

"I do not want death for the sinner but that they turn..."

From Ezekiel 33:11:

"Say to them: ‘As I live,’ says the Lord God, ‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?’" (NKJV)

It's from the Luke 6, the first half of the verse 17th:
At that time, Jesus stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude

Quite strange as the sentence is not finished

It's written in a very old way of Church Slavonic writing, so it's very difficult to read it. Here is a better resolution:

For sure it's prophet Gedeon from the Book of Judges. The first word is "Az" means "I", the second one I suppose is "runo" means "fleece". The 3rd one is probably "Tya" meaning "you". The next one is "prezhde" meaning "before".
Moreover the last word is hidden in the middle and probably has a "titlo" (abbrevation used for holy words).

I tried to find something in the Bible in Church Slavonic, as usually Old Testament saints keep in their hands rolls with the words from it, but it seems this time it's an abbreviation or a paraphrase.

Furthemore, I've searched for other icons of st. Gedeon and on each one there are different words, however this one is the most similar:

Pray for persecuted Christians, especially in Serbian Kosovo and Raška, Egypt and Syria

Yes, it does. The passage is Romans 10:1.

What a nice icon. Any idea who's responsible?

No idea, but I came across it on http://orthodoxchristiansupply.com/ .  They get some very unique icons for reproduction.

St. Gavrill Gur, New Martyr

A modified quote, with some misspellings or intentional archaisms, from a sermon he is said to have given on Sts. Romanus and Barulas as per here:

"Beloved brothers and sisters! When we imprint these lessons from the lives of the martyrs in our hearts, we shall pray to the Lord that He gives us His own heavenly help to follow them, so as not to deprive us of life eternal and not to ruin for it by our negligence our children."
"Take heed, you who listen to me: Our misfortune is inevitable, we cannot escape it. If God allows scandals, it is that the elect shall be revealed. Let them be burned, let them be purified, let them who have been tried be made manifest among you."   - The Life of the Archpriest Avvakum by Himself

I generally use Azbyka.ru but it spells out abbreviated words and only utilizes a select few of the archaic letters. To get "Бж҃ıе," I had to find the necessary characters elsewhere.

More specifically, it's from an adaption of that psalm bit in a prayer uttered by the Grand Prince at the consecration of the Church of the Tithes. This particular version of the full prayer, slightly different from what appears in the manuscripts of the Primary Chronicle, can be found in Russian here. The bolded parts of the initial lines are those words that appear on the icon itself:

"Lord God, look down from Heaven and behold, and visit Your vineyard, and accomplish that which Your right hand has planted. Look down upon this new people of Yours, whose hearts You have changed towards understanding, to know You, the True God!"

I accidentally quoted myself so here's the full prayer courtesy of OCA.org, which I had used as the basis for my translation:

"O Lord God, look down from Heaven and behold, and visit Your vineyard, which Your right hand has planted. And make this new people, whom You have converted in heart and mind to know You, the True God. And look down upon this Your church, which Your unworthy servant has built in the name of the Mother Who gave birth to Thee, the Ever-Virgin Theotokos. And whoever prays in this church, let his prayer be heard, through the prayers of the All-Pure Mother of God."

In my research, I found, however, that this likewise doesn't quite accord with the prayer as it appears in the Primary Chronicle, and is rather a translation of a different Russian variant.

For future reference:

Quote from: The Russian Primary Chronicle
6502-6504 (994-996). Vladimir, upon seeing his church completed, entered it and prayed to God, saying, "Lord God! Look down from heaven, behold and visit thy vineyard, and perfect what thy right hand has begun. Make these new people, whose heart thou hast turned unto wisdom, to know thee as the true God. Look upon this thy church which I, thine unworthy servant, have builded in the name of the Ever-Virgin Mother of-God who bore thee. Through the intercession of the Immaculate Virgin, hear the supplication of whosoever shall pray in this church." After he had offered this prayer, he added, "I bestow upon this church of the Holy Virgin a tithe of my property and of my cities." Then he wrote out a donation and deposited it in the church, declaring, "If anyone violates this promise, may he be accursed." So he gave the tithe to Anastasius of Kherson, and made a great festival on that day for the boyars and elders of the people, distributing also much largess to the poor.
"May the Lord our God remember in His kingdom all Holy Catholic Apostolic Church, which heralds the Word of Truth and fearlessly offers and distributes the Holy Oblation despite human deficiencies and persecutions moved by the powers of this world, in all time and unto the ages of ages."

No, it's a Cambridge translation from the Laurentian text, you can easily find a PDF, but I don't think the forum rules allow these links. I really liked it, so I posted it here so it would be saved somewhere.  :P

Thanks. All cards on the table, I have done no meaningful study of old Slavic languages and even my Russian is rather mediocre. The quote above helped me with some terms I might have mistaken otherwise. That said, the translator did make some questionable choices, not least of all being their refusal to deal with "Бц҃а" directly.

Psalm 38:9 (37:10, LXX):

Lord, before You is all my desire, and my sighing is not hidden from You.

As a side note, the way his hand is positioned makes me think someone was trying to pull a fast one. The icon's style aside, it is potentially arguable whether he is blessing according to the Old Rite or the New.

For the second icon:

"Podvig - this is, having forgotten yourself and your own good, to be a support for everyone. Podvig - this is a life for others."

The second line appears on the first icon.

I think it's something like "ready to endure all sufferings for Christ's sake", but hopefully Cunningham's Law will work here and you'll have a better answer.

That's how I'd interpret it as well but I was thrown for a loop by the use of "являяся," which while somewhat resembling the modern Russian imperative "являйся," seems rather to be the equivalent of the present adverbial participle "являясь" as shown in its use in Acts 1:3.

I imagine it's just a lettering mistake but I may very well be missing something.

In the context of the Acts it's something like "He was appearing to them". In the context if this icon it could be translated "Be ready to expose yourself (gotov yavlyaysya) to all sufferings for Christ".

What's clearly visible says "Rejoice my brethren, and the peace of Jesus Christ shall be with you."

Most of the final word is cut off but it could be "благодушественно," in which case just append "pleasantly" or "gently" or something of that fashion to the end.

"And I, Master, with the voice of thy mother"

Curiously the word for "Master" lacks two of its three vowels but doesn't have an abbreviation mark either.

Couldn't tell you what the context is or what other words might be missing.

Did the movie "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" cause a lot of chuckles when it got translated into Slavic markets?

I doubt it. Yaya or yiayia is Greek for grandmother or old lady. Slavs call their old ladies baba, babounya, etc.

Oh, I took Dominika to mean that "yaya" was an ordinary word for "egg" in some Slavic language (then my mind started trying to connect it etymologically to "ova").

You understood her just fine, and your etymological suspicion is correct, but the joke probably works better in a spoken rather than written form, at least in Polish. For those familiar with what seems to be near-universal Slavic slang, there might also be a somewhat more vulgar joke in there too.

This is Galatians 6:1a: "Братие, аще и впадет человек в некое прегрешение, вы духовнии исправляйте таковаго духом кротости" (Church Slavonic, modernised orthography).

In KJV: "Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness."
"May the Lord our God remember in His kingdom all Holy Catholic Apostolic Church, which heralds the Word of Truth and fearlessly offers and distributes the Holy Oblation despite human deficiencies and persecutions moved by the powers of this world, in all time and unto the ages of ages."

Interest that KJV says "restore such an one", makes me presume the word "one" wasn't pronounced "wun" yet back when the KJV was written. "Ain" or "ay" is still pronounced in northern Scotland.

Whoops...

My notion of Church Slavonic is actually much below basic, but in this thread I can grasp some words from my very basic Russian and type the rest into Google.

The website that hosts this image has a transcription and a sufficient translation on its dedicated page:

"This was (he) who was before me. Behold the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the whole world. Repent for the kingdom of God has drawn near. For already the axe lies at the root of the tree."

It's Russian. "God calls all for holiness. Any work can be converted into an instrument for personal santification and of others." Sounds like something he would have said.
"May the Lord our God remember in His kingdom all Holy Catholic Apostolic Church, which heralds the Word of Truth and fearlessly offers and distributes the Holy Oblation despite human deficiencies and persecutions moved by the powers of this world, in all time and unto the ages of ages."

I guess I like the one on the right better, it seems more "vintage" somehow.
Christ my God, set my heart on fire with love in You, that in its flame I may love You with all my heart, with all my mind, and with all my soul and with all my strength, and my neighbor as myself, so that by keeping Your commandments I may glorify You the Giver of every good and perfect gift. I believe the first part says "St. Alexius, Metropolitan of Moscow, Wonderworker", but the "wonderworker" part is just guessing because I can only read "miracle", not "worker". The second part says "St. Alexius, man of God".

Lol, I wrote it in reply 117.
There is an abbreviation "chud" so it has to be "wonderworker", as for "miracle" the abbreviation is rather not used.

I’ve seen mention of the “honorable chains” or “precious chains” of St. Peter. Google translate gives me “time chains” of St. Peter. What is the better translation for these chains?

Honorable. There is for example "chesny krest" so it means "honorable Cross".
Google translate probable takes only the fisrt part of the word: "chas" and it means "time".

A google search reveals he’s the patron of dental health, reasonable merit for appearing on a healing icon.

(Included above are the letterer's mistakes, specifically the wrong stress mark on final letters and the absence of a necessary abbreviation mark for Christ. I couldn't figure out how to replicate the superscript on the last word but since it was wrong anyway, I fixed it.)

St. Anthony of Optina

Возложим печаль нашу на Гд҃а и покоримся его святой волѣ успоко

Save for the last word, it's from his letters:

"We shall place our sorrow in the Lord and submit to His holy will peaceably."

(More or less. Try as I might to standardize my responses, I can't replicate some of these texts on my phone. The superscripts above were either changed or written out instead. I've also dropped the stress marks because there aren't enough and two out of three don't make much sense.)

Г҃ди да бу́детъ на ме́сте се́мъ благослове́ніе с҃тыѧ Аѳо́нскіѧ горы́

From his Life, at the foundation of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra:

"O Lord, let the blessing of the Holy Athonite Mountain be upon this place."

Нѐ бꙋ́демъ жѐ ꙋныва́ть и҆ нѐ бꙋ́демъ дꙋ́мать бꙋ́дто сде́лали что̀ вели́кое и́бо недосто́й[ны]

The last word is cut off but it's fairly clear where it's going. It's from his Life according to St. Athanasius, the bolded portion being the bit in question:

"Wherefore, children, let us not faint nor deem that the time is long, or that we are doing something great, 'for not worthy are the sufferings of this present time to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed to us-ward' (Rom. 8:18)."

(I'vd re-ordered the quote from Romans to better reflect the text being translated without affecting its meaning.)

Гд҃ь терпѣ́нїем̾ твои́м̾ и҆зведе́тъ тѧ̀ ѿ рѡ́ва страсте́й и҆ ѿ брѣ́нїѧ нечистоты̀

From his Life, said as part of his advice to co-suffering monastics:

"The Lord, with your patience, will lead you out of the pit of the passions and from the dirt of impurity."

(Had to find a better image. Didn't realize the text was upside down until I did.)

Is it his Christmas wish list?  Does she look so dejected because she’s wondering how to pay for all of that on a carpenter’s salary?

Mother of God "Assuage my Sorrows"

Су́дъ пра́веденъ суди́те, ми́лость и щедро́ты твори́те ко и҆́скреннему своему̀

Seems to be derived from Zachariah 7:9:

"Judge true judgment; render mercy and compassions to your neighbor."
