How much do you pay?
« on: May 05, 2014, 02:04:37 PM »
My dad is trying to get health insurance. He is self-employed and that is the real problem. How much do you pay for your plan and what benefits do you get in general? How much hospital is covered, doctor, specialist visit, etc? He has high blood pressure so I want him to get decent coverage and what he got for $39 a month seems to be a joke. I told him that he should either get Obamacare or be willing to pay at least a decent price for insurance that will do something for him but he's more interested in getting the absolute cheapest plan he can. Not that I have anything wrong with wanting a deal but you have to balance the cost and the benefits. If you are older and have high blood pressure and other possible health problems you need a good plan. So how much do you pay? I get Medicare but when I was working I had to pay a decent amount if I wanted a good plan--but I also got part of it paid since I was not self-employed. My dad has a the problem of having no employer.

$100/month through the company.  You used to be able to get a catastrophic plan for $70ish privately, but IDK what Obamacare has done to that.

Don't have one. Goverment provides our health care.

+1, although dental and eye care coverage is minimal.

Thanks. It seems it was a supplement plan or whatever. He was under the impression, for whatever reason, if was a full coverage plan. They told him it would cover all doctor's visit and everything but when we got the stuff it only covers a small amount. Cancelling it of course and looking into whatever department regulates insurance he said. His main problem is he is self-employed so he has to pay everything. There is Obamacare but I am not sure how good that is for the middle class. I hate dealing with insurance companies. I find them unscrupulous scum who for whom the fires of hell are prepared....well before anyone gets on me for wishing anyone hell I am simply venting but the certainly the way in which insurance companies do business is a sin that demands eternal punishment. It is a grave sin like murder and I rank it among the worse because of the injury it does to society as a whole, much like treason. It is why usury is so censured by traditionally--it does injury to the economy, to the lives of people trying to make a living, and everything. After all:

Who is the covetous man? One for whom plenty is not enough. Who is the defrauder? One who takes away what belongs to everyone. And are not you covetous, are you not a defrauder, when you keep for private use what you were given for distribution? When some one strips a man of his clothes we call him a thief. And one who might clothe the naked and does not—should not he be given the same name? The bread in your hoard belongs to the hungry; the cloak in your wardrobe belongs to the naked; the shoes you let rot belong to the barefoot; the money in your vaults belongs to the destitute. All you might help and do not—to all these you are doing wrong

—St. Basil the Great

"I am often reproached for continually attacking the rich. Yes, because the rich are continually attacking the poor. But those I attack are not the rich as such, only those who misuse their wealth. I point out constantly that those I accuse are not the rich, but the rapacious; wealth is one thing, covetousness another. Learn to distinguish."

--St. John Chrysostom

I just have this strange opinion that when you do business with someone you seek to make a profit but you are always plain and honest with your customer because enterprise is not simply about making money since profit is not the last end of ones life but God.

Government provides basic health care insurance here. I have private supplemental insurance for prescription drugs, dental, vision, non-medical practitioners such as physiotherapists, clinical psychologists, chiropractor, etc. About $210 monthly for my wife and me. That amount is tax deductible, so basically I do get it all back eventually.

Yeah, well we are still working on that insurance thing here in America. Count yourself lucky.

Count yourself lucky.

Nope. I'd rather pay for insurance than pay high taxes, high prices due to high taxes and lack of competition. Which is of course due to high taxes and ridiculous regulation.

So, count yourself lucky. At least your food is cheap and you can decide yourself what you want to do with your own money. :police:

and of course, you don't pay taxes.

I remember my introduction to the VAT in Finland.

Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it; but if he did anything so that he may do it no more.
A hasty quarrel kindles fire,
and urgent strife sheds blood.
If you blow on a spark, it will glow;
if you spit on it, it will be put out;
                           and both come out of your mouth

Why an Earth you've had an introduction to our taxation. Have you studied economics or something?

We don't? News to me. Not having to file taxes is not the same as not having to pay them. They just come out of the paycheck before we even get our hands on it.

VAT has existed in the UK since at least the 70s, currently at a rate of 20%.
