Will you receive communion from a computerized priest?
« on: March 27, 2014, 12:25:03 AM »
From the editorial piece: The Coming Job Apocalypse in the Washington Post:

Quote
In a paper they wrote last year, Carl Benedikt Frey of Oxford University’s Program on the Impacts of Future Technology, and Michael A. Osborn, an Oxford engineering professor, broke down the U.S. economy into 702 distinct occupations and classified those occupations by the probability of their computerization over the next few decades. They concluded that 47 percent of U.S. workers have a high probability of seeing their jobs automated over the next 20 years, including in transportation (where the driverless car has become a reality), manufacturing and retail sales. They offer no particular policy suggestions to remedy this cataclysm, save that “high-skill and high-wage” jobs are the least likely to be swept away and that workers, accordingly, need “to acquire creative and social skills” that computers are unlikely to master until a more distant time.

If the situation was to really to come down to a matter of computer priests or no priests, the easy solution would be to go back to the old model of having a peasant farmer priest who serves the liturgy, doesn’t hear confessions or preach and has a day job.

Draft a member of the laity, make them take some kind of basic theological education like St. Stephens Course and keep things simple.

Blessed Nazarius practiced the ascetic life. His clothes were tattered. He wore his shoes without removing them for six years.

No, I would not take the Eucharist from a computer priest.  Doesn't a priest need to be a human being? :-\

Think about it, robot clergy! They'll never offend a congagant, they'll always have time to visit parishoners, they'll always start and end services on time....,they're a congregational council's dream!

This isn't strange, considering that it's Japan.

A priest must be a human being.  Without question.

Let us not forget that our clergy are more than just vessels of knowledge.  They are men, who have been anointed by the laying on of hands, and the Grace of God is upon them.

Anyone who thinks a computerized priest can offer them absolution does not truly understand the Faith.

Granted, the computerized version would be great to answer theological questions, as it could pull from vast resources.....oh but, wait....that's why we have Google.
Conquer evil men by your gentle kindness, and make zealous men wonder at your goodness. Put the lover of legality to shame by your compassion. With the afflicted be afflicted in mind. Love all men, but keep distant from all men.

Are you content with just being an intelligent hairless ape that just cannot resist the primitive urge to fling poo at people passing by,  just like a monkey in the zoo ?

Do you stay in the field and do the work that you accepted, or do you continuously run back into town and give people black eyes, or maybe push them down the stairs, because they don't do what you do ?

Enough of the lizard aliens!
The memory of God should be treasured in our hearts like the precious pearl mentioned in the Holy Gospel. I do not waste my time worrying about impossible hypotheticals.

I survive on the small fact that someone still has to tell the computer what to do...

but the second the Matrix takes over.....

then again maybe it already has and it lets me feel useful.

What if said priest gets cybernetic implants bit by bit? Artificial ears, eyes, hands, heart, brain...
Does the Church need a canon defrocking cyborgs?
Quote from: Nun M.
The dread Pantocrator...is also "Christouli mou", (my little Christ), who really listens when you run in to your neighborhood church on the way to work to cry and light a candle because your daughter is in trouble at school. The untouchable and all-holy Mother of God is also "Panayitsa mou", who really will take your part before the court of heaven because, just like your own mom, she’ll always stick up for her children, no matter how badly they’ve behaved.

If the Pope accepts Martians into the RC Church, I would presume they could become priests. Yet another complication in the detente between Catholicism and Orthodoxy. *sigh*  ;D
